about completed his job, expecting to go

aro upwards of 1200 co'umns and 800
girders, tho aggregate weight of which iron
work will bo 4000 tons. Tho picture gal
leries alone will bo l'-IOO feet in length
and more than GO feet in height. In these
ewrmous walls more than six million of
bricks have already been swallowed up,
and more than twelve millions more havo
yet to bo laid, Tho gallery, whan com
plctcd, will be divided by semi-circular
arches into compartments ; of these, two
will bo 325 font long, a third 150 feet, a
fourth and fifth 75 feet, and four smaller
ones 50 feet long. Tho navo of tho buil
diug, which terminates at cither end of the
collossal dome, is 85 feet wide ; it is form
ed of double columns coupled to gcther.
Ono of these columns is circular, the other
1 MHiarc, the former faces tho nave, and they
' arc each IS inches in diameter. On tho
i right and left of tho navo are two sido
'isles formed of iron columns eight inches
' in diameter, and placed feet apart and
