TASTUiilNa MOWING GROUND.
A correspondent of tlio Valley Farmer
who dates at Upper Alton, 111 , gives somo
reasons for pasturing mcadovra, which do
serves attention. lie says i
"Sly oxpericnea 13, that pasturing mea
dows of any kind in the fall season of tho
j'oar, Is a decided advantag to them, pro
tided they aro not pastured too much, and
for tho following rcasous 1 If a meadow is
left after mowing without pasturing in the
months of August and September, ifthoro
ho any fall rains, tho wild grasses and
weeds will spring up, and as they grow
much taller than tho fall growth of timo
thy or blue grass, they seem to clioko out
tho fall growth of tha young grass; and
if tho weeds and wild grasses aro allowed
to remain all winter ami spring, they will
bo materially in tho way of the following
harvest. 1 hare had amplo experience to
provo this 111 our rich bottom lands. Jly
opinion is that meadows should bo pastured
after harvest say in the months of Scplcm
ber aud October, sufficiently to keep down
tho weeds and wild grasses. I have 110
ticed particularly in our bottom meadows
where a partition fenco ran through tho
meadow, and where one side was pastured
regularly every fall season, and on the
other side, being a corn-field, or in somo
way not admitting pasture for stock, that
whilo tho tido of the meadow regularly
pasturedevcry fall would keep a goad set,
tho other side not being pastured, would
iu a few years bo taken with wild weeds
and beconio worthless, unless broken up
aud newly set.''
THE 1JEST ELM THEE.
Tho inquiry is not un frequently made,
which is tho best sort of elm tree ? To
which wo generally reply, patriotically of
course, the American White Elm. Its
granduro and dignity, combined with equal
gracefulness, are nowhere rurpassed. Yet
other elms havo their excellencies. The
Scotch and English do not grow a3 lofty,
nor swetp so proudly, but their foliago is
darker, denser, and docs not turn yellow
and drop :o early in the Autumn, as docs
the American. The Cornish (Irish) elm is
an erect and dark leaved tree, worthy of
a place in every good collection. Tho
Dutch cork-barked elm is also ono of the
very best trees. It comes out late in the
Spring, bat holds its leaves well up to cold
woathcr. It is entirely hardy, and is prob
ably tho most rapid grower' of all. It
stands quite upright, making a globular,
or plume-shaped head. It may bs readily
distinguished from most foreign species by
its rough corky bark, which, however, is
less conspicuous than our own native cork
barked elm.
Wo havo seen it stated that trees of the
Dutch elm, standing in the streets of largo
towns, among other trees lindens, ash and
common elms woro entirely untouched
by tho catlcrpillar and other worms which
infest other tress. If this exemption is a
general rule, it will put the Dutchman
high on tho list of town trees.
JAPANESE GAltDEN.
Fond as the Americans aro of tlieir gar
dens, they would appear to bo excelled in
this respect by the Japanese. Every ono
of these singular people, both rich and
poor, is said to havo a garden tho latter,
f possible, both in front as well as in the
rear of their cottages. In them they cul
tivate tho plum aud tho cherry, not for tho
fruit, but for tho flower. I5y a peculiar
treatment they improve them so much as
to make tho flowers become as largo as
roses, indeed, it is stated that plum blos
soms have been seen four times as largo as
our common cabbago roses. In tho seasou
when thoy aro in full blossom, theso trees
afford a do ightful tight in the gardens,
and about tho temples aud public walks.
SPICED HASH.
Take tho remnants of a cold steak, or
any other kind of roast or boiled meats;
bash them fine, and mis with potatoes well
mashed, and add ono or two beaten eggs ;
season to your liking, with salt, pepper,
nutmeg or maca, and cloves; make it into
a loaf aud bako brown ; it is good eating
hot or cold.
HENOVATING OLD WALL PAPER.
The prudent bousewifo who, on account
of "bard times," lias decided not to rc
papcr tho bitting room, as desirous, will
find the old paper very much improved in
appearanco by simply rubbing it well with
a flannel cloth dipped in Indian meal.

or any thing else.
