Tho llight lev. Samuel llowman
Assistant Hisliop of Pennsylvania, died on
Saturday morning lu.st, on his way from
Pittsburg to Duller. IIo was buried at
Saint James Church, Lancaster, on Tues
day evening last at 0 o'clock.
It seems that tho Bishop, after spending
threo days with Dr. Van Dcifcn, during
which ho was frequently congratulated ou
his improved healthy appearance, took tho
sis a. in. train on tho Allegheny Valley
Railroad, en routo for Uutlcr, wlioro ho
had an appointment to administer the rito
of confirmation on tho following Sabbath.
At Frccport, ill miles from Pittsburg, ho
purposed taking the ftigo to Duller.
Al'tei proceeding about 19 miles, tho
train was halted in consequence of a bridge
which had been injured by a late freshet
and a "lnntWliilu" nearly two milc3 be
yond. Arrangements had been mado to
convoy the passengers over this part of tho
road in a hand-ear, a locomotive aud pas
senger car being in readiness on tho other
mJo to convey them on. Tho female pas
sengers were placed on tho hand-car, but
somo of tho gentlemen preferred to walk,
among whom was thoDWhop. Mr. Frank-
liu Wright, civil engineer, formerly of
Lancastcr,was at the bridgo,supci intending
its rc-cointruction, and recognizing the
liishop, although ho had not seen him for
nearly ten years previously, urged him to
t-ike passage in (ho car, but ho again ex
pressed his desire to walk, aud according
ly left on foot.
Tho passangcrs arrived at tho other
train and took their seat-i, when somo one
remarked that an elderly gentleman whom
ho had noticed in the ear after leaving
PitNburg, was not ou board : but as no
one on the train personally know iho Dish
op, or his destination, tho conductor, after
detaining a few minutes beyond his time,
moved on.
Tho workman in charge of tho hand-
