It is of moro imporUnco to tlio farmer
than is generally supposed, that a certain
portion of hU farm stock should consist of
sheep Speaking of this point, It. S. lay,
of Linn, recently rcmaked at an agricultu
ral meeting in boston, (as reported in tlio
N. E. Farmer,) "Sheep arc gleaners after
othor stock, and will keep the cattle pasture
in good condition by being turned into
them ocasionally to cat the coarser plants
which havo been left. They will enrich
tho land. Thoro is no manure so fertili
zing a3 that of tlio sheep, and it docs not
so readily wasto by exposure as that of
other animals. Sheep may bo made cr
cccdingly useful in helping to prepare land
for a crop. A German agriculturist says
that tho dropings from one thousand sheep
during a single night would manure an
acre sufficiently. Uv that rulo a farmer
may dctcrmino how long to keep any giv
cn number of sheep on a particular pieco
of land. Mr. Fay said ho was accustomed
to fold his sheep upon land which ho de
signed for corn and other crops j and in
so doiug ho shut upon half an aero at a
time, keeping them thero by a wiro fenco
which was easily moved from place to place.
In this way his land was well manured
without the labor of shoveling and carting."
Thcso ideas are worth reading by 1I10
farmer. Wo believe any farm will bear a
certain number of sheep, in proportion to
tho other stock, not only without loss to
the amount of grazing which it will yield
to tho cattle and horses, but to tho increase
of tho same. Mr. Fay, by his mauagmcut,
makes tho lambs and manure pay for keep,
ing the sheep, and tho wool is clear profit
Limc eor Insects. According to the
Northwestern Farmer, tho uso of limc pro.
vents tho ravages of insects. It gives tho
tatcmcnt of J. Baughman, of Westmore
land county, Pennsylvania, that "he had
not failed in raising good crops of wheat
and corn for tho last twenty-fivo years, du
ring all which time ho has made free use of
air-alackcdlimo putting from two to three
hundred bushels upon an acre every four or
five years about one-half sown upon the
land when the grain is sown, and tho oth
cr when the grain is sis or twelve inches
high. lie says that ho has never, during
tho whole of that period, lost one bushel of
grain, to his knowledge, by any bug or
insect whatever, while those of his neigh
hours who did not make use of lime were
often injured severely' by such causes."
He thinks tho farmers of the West find
remedy for tho chinch bug in the free uso
of lime, and that ho lias grown sound pota
toes on limed land, and when otherwise
they would bo worthless from the rot.

prefer setting out plants at evening, and
when tho ground is wet by ram. Wo pro

by tramping. When the holo is made,
havo a pint or moro of water poured in
ISeforo tho water all soaks away, the plant

that the plant is surrounded with moisture,
and yet the surface is left loose and opcn)

that tho troublo required is abundantly re
paid, whether tho number of plants be
largo or small.
Lime on Seed Potatoes. Several
eubscribcrs speak of good results from a
method described in the Agriculturist some
time ago, which was, to cut tho potatoes,
roll them in fresh limc, and let them lie
eix to ten days beforo planting. Tho re
ports aro, that potatoes so treated sprout
sooner after planting, grow moro rapidly,
and aro not affected by rot. This looks
xcusonnplo ; the lime corrects acids in the
cut tubers, and what is probably of most
utility, the alkalies assist in decomposing
tho organic matter around the seed, and
thus immediately supply moro nourishment.
Mnsir Barii els. Many Larrels at

Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
arc so composed that disease within tho range of
their action can rarely withstand or evade them
Their penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
nnd invigorate every portion of tho human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring
its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of thcso
properties, tho invalid who is lowed down with
rain or physical debility is astonished to find his
health or energy restored ty a remedy at once bo
simple and inviting.
.Not only do they cure the every-day complaints
of every body, lut also many formidable and
dangerous diseases. Tho agent below named is
pleased to furnish grntH my American Almanac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the following complaints : Costive
litis, Ucai thurnt Headache arhhijj jrotn dtsorth red
Stomach, Jsausca, Imlirjcttion,Vani in and Morbid
Inaction of the Itoiccls, I'Uituhmy, Loss of Appe
tttr, Jaundice, and other kindred complaints,
arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
of its functions.
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,
l'OIt THE XlAl'JlJ CUim OP
Coiigh$, Colds, Influciizn, Hoarseness
Croup, ilroncMtis, Incipient Consump
tion, and fur the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of tho
disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous arc the cases of its cures, that almost
tfvery section of count ij abounds in persons pub
licly'hnown, who have been restored fiom alarming
and cwn desperate di.sc.iscs of the lungs by its
use. AVhen once tried, it superiority over every
other medicine of its Kind is tooappaunt to escape
observation, and where its irtuct arc known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote tu employ
for the distressing and dmgernus affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate,
while many inferior remedies thrust upon the
community have failed and been discarded, this
has gained fiicnds by every trial, conferred benefits
on the nffiieted they can never forget, and pro
duced cures too numerous and too remarkable lo
be forgotten.
