The meeting of tho Tcachors' Instituto
of Columbia county, hold last week at
Orangovillc, was attended' with decided
success. A partial report of tho proceed'
ings, reported by Mr. Drockway, Chair
man on publication, appears in tbis Coluni'
bia Democrat. Wo aro happy to learn
that tho Educational interests aro progress
ing encouragingly in Columbia county.
Pennsylvania Legislature. This
body met last Tuesday, at tho City of liar
risburg. Messrs. Klino and Osterhout,
cur members in their seats. R. M. Pal
mer was elected Speaker of tho Senate
and Russel Errctt , Clerk. In tho House,
Ellsha W. Davis, was choscs Speaker, and
E. II. Raucb, Clerk.
Upon next Tuesday they elect a United
States Senator.
The Editor of tho Republican advises
his party friends to stand firm to their
principles "not to yield ono inch." Now
tbo "balaneo of tbo world, and tho rest of
mankind," would doubtless liko to know
what arc tho principles of tho mongrel re.

towns and cities of Now England, thus
demonstrating that tho curses which bavo
been hurled from that violent abolition

which may be considered tbo staplo trado
of Massachusetts, wo pcrceivo, has ro
ecivcd a terrible shock. Many of tho
factories havo suspended work entirely
several houses ih Natick havo failed, and
nearly all have been compelled to rcduco
their forco of workmen ono-tbird or one
half. Tho foundries and machino shops
of Connecticut, too, aro in a similar con
dition ; establishment after establishment
is dismissing its operatives and closing its
doors, and this is but tho beginning to tho
end, Tho republican politicians will find
out now how much easier it ii to demolish
than to construct. Thoy bavo broken
down all tho manufacturing and commer
cial interest- of tho country and turned thou
sands of people out of employment. But

TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
In answor to a call published in tho
eovoral newspapers of tho County, a num
ber of Tcachors met in tho Church, at
Orangovillo, on tho forenoon of December
S4th, 1800, for tho purposo of holding tlio
Fourth Annual Session of tho Columbia
County Teachers' Instituto. It was called,
to order by tho County Superintendent,
Mr. Ari'LE.MAN, who briefly stated tho
objects of tho meeting. On motion ho was
elected President, and A. P. Young and
Q. S. Coleman, Secretaries.
After somobrief remarks by tbo differ
ent members, tho President wa3 authorized
to appoint a committed on General Ar
rangements. Ho Bolcctod O. S. Coleman,
Jas. V. Kcclcr and Sylvester Dietrich, to
form that committee, Committees on Pi-
nanco and Criticism wcro also ordered, but
their appointment was deferred until tho
afternoon. Tho Instituto then adjourned
to meet again at half-past ono o'clock.
AFTERNOON SESSION.
Tho Instituto was called to order at 2
o'clock. Tho President then announced
tho order of exercises for tho afternoon
and evening, and tho following committees :
Committee on Criticism, J. 15. Knittlo, A.
M. Whito, R. R. Pcaler, Misses E. L.
Rich and II. A. Vandcrslicc. Committco
on Finance, M. Whitmoycr, C. B. Urock
way, and Miss Jennie Warden. Prof.
II. D. Walker opened tho exercises by a
drill on Object Lessons, showing their ben
efits and tho manner of conducting them
After a recess of ten minutes, Wm. Bur
gess gave a lecturo on Reading, showing
in a forciblo manner tho necessity of its
being properly taught in our common
schools.
Prof. Walker devoted tho next half hour
to tho consideration of Arithmetic. Ho
criticised tho definitions usually given in
our text books, and supplied their placo
by moro suitablo ones.
Tho Institution then adjourned to meet
at Ci o'clock in tbo evening.
EVENING SESSION.
The meeting was called to order at tbo
appointed time, and somo miscellaneous
business was transacted. The committee on

usually dry subject interesting. Ho amply
illustrated his method of teaching it.

adjourned to meet again at tho stated
timo.
TUE8DAY AFTERNOON.
The Instituto was called to order at one
quarter to two o'clock. Prof. Walker im
mediately procooded to call tho attention
of tho toaobers to tho subject of Geogra
phy. Ho showed conclusively how it
might bo mado tho most interesting of our
common school branches. After enjoying
a short recess, a beautiful Glco was sung.
Mr. Burgess then resumed tlio subject
of Reading, and brought out somo very
good ideas. Another recess was had,
which was followed by moro singing.
Prof. Walker during the next hour,gavo
a very interesting drill on Object Lessons,
At tho conclusion of his lecturo a vote of
thanks was tendered to tho New Columbus
Quartette Club, for tho delightful manner
in which they had cnlortained tho Insti
tute. Adjourned.
EVE.NINQ SESSION.

o'clock, and tho minutes woru read, cor
rected, and adopted. Tho committco on
Criticism followed with their report. Mis

elocutionary powers. Though but a young
man, ho has already aadc his marl: ; and
we bavo no doubt that tho "Orangovillo
Malo and Femalo Academy" will prosper
uudcr hiii direction. Tho building was so
densely crowded that n recess of ten min
utos was deemed necessary.
Prof. Walker proceeded to deliver his
popular lecturo on "Tho Personal Qualifi
cations of tho Teacher." It was conceded
on all sides to bo tho production of a well
stored and maturo mind.
Prof. J. P. Wickcrsham, who had en
tered during the last lecturo, was then in-1
troduccd. Ho simply mado afewrcmarks
stating bis intention of commencing to umk
on tho morrow. Adjourned.
WEDNESDAY FORENOON.
At tho appoiutcd timo tho Teachers
were called to ordor, and tho Rev. Mr.
Goodrich oponod tho Instituto with an
eloquent prayer. Tho questions which
had been placed in tho box wcro then
auswered by Prof, Walker.
'1 ho subject of teaching tho Alphabet
was then taken up by Prof. Wickorsham,
who showed several feasiblo plans of ma
king it an interesting and easy study for
ohildrcn. After a recess of a few minutes,
ho continued tho same subject.
Ho was followed by Prof, Walker, who
introduced some now ideas rclativo to tho
study of Grammar. Tho committco on
Finance then reported that they had de
cided to levy a tax of one dollar on each
member of tho Instituto, for tho purposo of
defraying tho necessary expenses, aud
hoped that the payment would bo prompt.
Prof, Wickcrsham next considered tho
importanco of studying Geography, and
tho manner of teaching it. His remarks
were pointed throughout. Ho also an

explaining the principles of Penmanship.

mado statements, showing tho necessity of
prompt payment from tho members.
Prof. Wickorsham then lectured on
general subjects, selceling thoso of tho
most importanco to tho teacher. Tho
Instituto adjourned at tho conclusion of his
remarks, to meet at the usual hour.

lecture. Tho subject was "Tho Duties of
tho Citizens to tho School." Though tho
building was crowded to excess, yet tho
utmost attention was paid to tbo plain and
pointed facts as thoy came from tho lips
of tho tpoakcr. Ho closed by muting all
to visit him at tho Stato Normal School at
Millersvillo. Aftor recess, tho Committco
on Publication again urged tho matter of
subscription for tho minutes. A piece of
musio was also sung by tho choir.
Prof. Walker lectured for boiuo timo on
tho duties of parents aud teachers, and
also alluded to tho right of children. Iu
answer to repeated calls, ho read Poo's
celebrated Poem, "Tho Bells "
Mr. Burgess presented tho following
resolution which was unanimously adopt

wannest thanks to Mr. Wickorsham, for
his able and valuablo labors among us in
elevating tbo educational standard of this
County : and wc trust tho friends of edu

The President called tho teachers to
order at ono quarter past nino. Prof.
Walker road a chapter ia tho Bible and
then offered up a prayer. Besides an
swering a number of questions ho talked

also explained his method of teaching
Grammar, and his reasons for it. Ho
next took up Arithmetic and solved many
practical questions. After reeess ho con
tinued his remarks on Grammar and pars

and its content commented on by Prof.
Walker. Tho Finauco committco again
called tho attention of delinquent teachers
to tho fact that they should pay tho a
mount levied upon them.
Prof. Walker mado somo further ro
marks on Arithmetic, and showed an easy
method of extracting tho Cube Root. Ho
also spout some timo on Percentage.
His next rubject was School Govern
ment. His experience in that alono would
bo of immonso benefit to any teacher.

of tho items too high, Mr. Broekway, from
tho Financo committee, stated that ho had
agreed to tho report, though if any ono
would do any of tho work cheaper, ho, for
ono, would bo willing to let them have tbo
job. This led to a blight misunderstand
ing, which, however, was speedily dissi
pated. Tbo committco on Publication reported,
that they bad nearly enough money col
tcctcd to get tho proceedings published in
a rct-pcctablo manner,
