snor. tiiu fowls.
Tho nliovo is not n, misprint for " Shoe
Ibo fowls" but mcana just wliat it sayi,
via:., put shoes on tlio fonli. Domcttio
fowlB would 1)0 of a great utility in ft field
of crowing corn or potatoes, and especial
ly bo in tlio garden, if they could bo kept
from tcratcliiug up the plants. With a
flock of poultry running among tlio vines
Ihorc would ho no trouble from bug?. A
long timo sinco we gave in tho .IgricuUu
rist a plan for attaching a jointed fpur
to the back fido of tlio legs of a hen, bo
that whon sho attempted to scratch, tho
falsa tpur would catch m tho ground and
throw her forward"; Bho would thus
speedily scratch herself out of tho prem
ises. This wa cousidcrod a very inge
nious arrangement, though not n. very
practicable one. But hero is a remedy,
both ingeuious and practicable, and what
is still better, it docs not send-the fowl
nway, but leaves her to gather tho insects,
and prevents her doing any harm with
her feet For tho idea we aro indebted to
the following paragraph, which wo find
in an exchange credited to tho Rural In
telligencer t " A friend of ours boardiug
in the country, found his hostess ono morn
ing busily engaged in making numerous
biuall woolen bags of singular shape.
Upon inrmiry, ho was enformed that they
were shoes for hens, to prevent them from
scratching. Tho lady Mated that it had
been her practice for years to shoo her
hens, and save her garden. These shoes
(I believe they aro not patented) wore of
woolen, made somewhat of the shapo of a
fowls foot, after which they wero closed
with a needio and bowed tightly on, ex
tending about an inch up the leg. Our
friend observed that bouio of the biddies,
possibly conceited with their now honors,
appeared to tread as though walking on
eggs praticuluarly was this the case when,
from tho width of the ehoo one would
conceiao that their toes might bo pinch
ed."
Now is not that a 'capital idea 2 How
taiy it is to sew pieces of thin strong colth
around the feet of a dozen or twenty, or
fifty fowls, in the form of a bag, leading
it loose enough not to obstruct tho uso of
the feet in walking and in roosting, but
making it tight euougli around the leg to
prevent its slipping off. Tlio animals may
then bo allowed to run at largo and gather
grasshoppers and other destructivo in
flects. "Wo shall put tho plan into iniuic
diato practice, and iucrcaso our stock of
poultry to tho undoubted advantage of
our plants, now infested with myriads of
insect pests. American Agriculturist.
Fall Top Dressing Every farmer
who has practiced fall top dressing, knows
it is invaluable. yThU docs not aiise so
much from the fact that it protects tho
Eurfaco of tho earth from eudden changes
of the atmosphere pvoTcnts its freezing
k.o early in the fall, or loosing its moisture
nnd heat by a too direct contact with the
wind. Iu short, tho roal benefit by fall
top dressing, is in its mulching the soil.
Stable manure is to valuable to bo used
for this purpose. Far better to keep this
to apply iu the spring, and then cover it
with earth immediately. At least ninety
per cent, of manure, used as a fall top-

HOSTETTER'S
STOMAGHJITTERS.
It Is rVfact that, nl somo period, every mem
ber f tho humnn family Is subject lo aiscAeo
or dlslurbnnce of tho boillly funcUons) but,
tvilli tbo kill of a gooi tonlo nnd tho cxcrclso
of plain common eense, they mny be ftblo eo lo
regulato tho eyetcm as to sccuro permanent
health. In order to accomplish this dosircd
object, tho truo cour60 to pursuo Is certainly
that which will produco a natural etato of
things at tho least hatard of vital strength and
life. For this purpose, Dr. Hosteller has In
troduced to this country a preparation bearing
his name, which Is not a now medicine, but ono
that has been tried for years, giving satisfac
tion to all who have used it. Tho Hitters
opcrato powerfully upon tho stomach, bowols,
nnd liver, restoring them to ti healthy and
vigorous action, and thus, by tbo simplo pro
cess of strengthening nature, cnablo tho sys
tem to triumph ovor disease
For tho euro of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Nou
ses, Flatulency, Loss of Appetite, or any Bilious
Complaints, arising front n morbid inaction
of tho Stomach or llowcls, producing Cramps,
Dysentery, Colic, Cholera Morbus, Sc., theso
Dilters havo no equal.
Diorrhoaa, dysentery or flux, so generally con
tracted by now settlers, and caused principally
by tho change of water and diet, will bo speedily
regulated by n brief uso of this preparation.
Dyspepsia, a, dlseaso which is probably lnoro
prevalent, in all its various forms, than any
other, nnd tho causo of which moy always
be attributed to derangements of Iho dlgestivo
organs, can bo cured without fail by uslug
HOSTKTTEIt'S STOMACH HITTERS, ns per
directions on tho bottlo. Forthis disease every
physician will recommend Dillcrs of some kind j
then why not nso an article known to bo infal
lible t All nations bavo their Bitters, as a pre
vrmllm nf disease and strcncthcncr of tho sys
tem in general j and among them all thero is
not to bo found a moro healthy pcoplo than
tho German, from whom thls.prcparation cma
natod, based upon scicntlfio experiments which
havo tended to novo tho valuo of this great
preparation in tlio scalo of'mcdicnl science.
Feveh asd AaVE.. This trying and provok
ing disease, which fixes its relentless grasp on
tlio body of man, reducing him to a mere sha
dow in a short time, nnd rendering him phy
sically and mentally useless, can bo dtiven
from tho body by tho uso of HOSTETTllll'S
ItEN'OWNED BITTERS. Further, nono of tho
above-stated diseases can be contracted, even
in exposed situations, if tho Bitters aro used
as per directions. And ns they neither crcato
nausea nor offend tho palate, and render un
necessary any cliango of diet or interruption
of ordinary pursuits, but promoto sound sleep
and healthy digestion, tho complaint is re
moved as speedily as is consistent with tlio pro
duction of a thorough and permanent cure.
For Persons in Advanced Years, who aro
suffering from an enfeebled constitution and
infirm body, these Bitters nro invaluable as ft
rcstorativo of strength and vigor, and need
only bo tried to bo appreciated. And to a.
mother whilo nursing these Bitters nro indis
pensable, especially whero tho mother's nour
ishment is inadequate to the demands of tlio
child, consequently her strength must yield,
nnd here it is whero a good tonic, such as
Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, is needed to impai t
temporary strength and vigor to tbo sjttom.
Ladies should by nil means try this remedy
for nil cases of debility, nnd, before so doing,
should ask their physician, who, if ho is
acquainted witli tho virtuo of tho Hitters, will
recommend their uso in all cases of weaknees.
CAUTIOIT. Vi'es caution the publio against using
any of tho many imitations or counterfeits, but ask
for HoSTETIEn'S CELECnlTED SioiiAcn BiTTcns,
nnd sco that each bottlo has tho words " Dr. J.
lloPtcttcr1 Stomach Bitters" blown on tho ride
of Uio bottle, nnd stamped on tbo metallic- eap
covering tho cork, and obs&rvo that our autograph
eignoturo is on tho label.
ai- Troparod nnd sold by HOBTETTEH &
SMITH, Pittsburgh, Pa., and sold by nil
druggists, grocers, and dealers generally
throughout tho United States, Canada, Couth
America, and Germany.
