    AG BI CULTURAL.
FAST; HORSES AT THE FAIRS
A BUUUl!.bTlUN.
So much has already been said in tlio
Agriculturttt, both in words nnd in
caricatures, ngainst tlio introduction of
running and trotting horses at agricultural
exhibitions, that it seems hardly necessary
to add anything raoro at tho present time,
Let thoso " fast" men and womon ttlio
delight in seeing homes ridden or driven
at break neck speed, get up performances
on their own hook ; they have no right
to introuueo a raco course into an cxliibi
lion of agrictjtural and horticultural pro
ducts. Illegitimate object of such nn
exhibition is to display improved farm
and garden products, and labor saving
implements, which may be Btudiod quietly
and calmly by cultivators for tho purpoco
of learning how to iuiprovo their own
practice.
A .correspondent, however, suggests a
mode of exhibiting the speed of horces
which is unobjectionable, and may bo of
practical utility. We havo seen the same
suggestion in tho Niagara Falls Oazetto,
tho Ontario Times, nniLtwo or three other
exchanges. For most farm purposes it is
desirable that a horso should be a fast
walker. A horso that can trot or gallop
n mile tho quickest, is not tho one that can
plow or harrow the largest area in n day
with the greatest case, or take a heavy
load to market with tho least delay. The
suggestion of our correspondent ij, that
tho managers .of agricultural exhibitions
offer prizes for tho fastest walking horses.
lie proposes that thcra bo soveral prizes,
say iu this wise :
1st A prizo to tho ainglo horse that will
walk a milo the soonest, under the sad
dle. 2nd A prizo to tho horso that will draw
a heavy load of given weight, ovor a
mile in the quickest time with the least
weariness all competing horses to bo
successively attached to the same load.
Sri A similar prizo to the last namod,
but for a lighter load.
4th and Gth Similar prizes to tbo 2nd
and 3d, for spans of horses.
It is also proposed .that similar prize bo
offered for rapid walking working oxen.
Thgse suggestions are' worthy of atten
tion. Fast walking animals aro wanted
by tho masses, fast trotters or runners
only by tho few. An exhibition of tho
walking capabilities of animals may not
draw so largo a crowd from our cities and
villages as a trotting match, but it would
have quite as much interest for farmers
.generally, and for their benefit ogricultu
ral fairs arc, or should be got up.
MAXIMS FOR POULTRY KEEPERS
Thoso who expect to lo successful in
raising or managing poultry, or Itopo to
Biako it a paying part of farm business,
should observe & fow simple rules which
will save them from much disappointment
and trouble.
1. It is not advisablo to koep largo
numbers of hens together, or go into tho
poultry business on a largo scale. It is
found Impracticable and unprofitable
besides they cannot bo kept in so healthy
a condition as where but fow aro toge
ther. 2. It Is impossiblo to keep hens to ad-
taut ago without having a suitably ttfiil
properly arranged homo for1 thoir accom
modation. This is as necessary as that a
farmer should havo a stablo for his cattle,
or a dwelling for his family.
8, In connexion with tho houso,
pou'try-yard should be provided, which
should contain a grass plot, gravel, some
quantities of slacked lime, and dry ashes.
4. The inside of the poultry homso
should be whitewashed twice a year or
oftoner, which will servo to keep it freo
from vermin, and the hens will .be kept
in better condition.
G. Piro water in sufficient quantities
must bo provided several times a day, in
Winter and Summer.
0. Feed should bo given at regular pe
sloth. To fatten fowls, they must not be
allowed to. run at large. Country Gen

LYE FOR TREES.
James Jenkins, Hancock County, Illi
nois, writes- as follows :
" Last Spring, after making soap, '.
took the lyc left in the kcttlo, after taking
off the soap, and washed tho bodies of
three apple trees, and liking tho effect,
this Spring I washed fifteen wore It
causes the old bark to scalo off, and gives
the trees a thrifty appearance. It kill
all email sprouts that may bo on tho
trunks of trees or about tho roots, and
kills all grass upon which it falls. It
will not do-to uso on small trees, without
first" making it very weak."
Kisprxo AprLis, A correspondent
of tho Farmers' Journal says he took a
keg full of apples last fall, which he eccaro
ly headed up and sunk to the bottom of a
mill pond. On bringing them to tho sur
faoo a few days ago, every applo was
found to bo quite free from Bpeeh or rot,
and as found and unwrinkled as when ta
ken from the tree.
