WOUKINQ CATTLE VS. HORSES.
Thopatiencor.e.ekncss, and uncomplain
ing toil of ttio working oxen ought, al
though it does not always, to endear him
to his master, and ensurs for him kind
ungo and protection. The writer has a
viid recollection of thosuccessivo yokes of
oxen, which during the years of his child
hood (tip tho alloy of tho Gcnnossce,)
Were owned and worked by his father.
Tho country at that timo was comparative
ly new and much of it of courso covered
with a dense growth of wood and timber.
Theic cattle had about as distinct and
marked foiituro and character, as differ
ent men j hut all of them wcro similar in
one thing, and that was doing to tho best
of their ability tho labor required of them.
Amid logs and stumps, on bido hills and
m swnmpi, over rough roads and throng;
bridgeless streams, we havo seen them
plod, where horses could not, or would
not go. Some of their drivers were kind,
others harsh and cruel. One in partial
lar is remembered, who was eternally
wieiding thr w!.;p, and seemed never to
bs happy uti'.t.a belaboring his team.
Hj was a good tuiuistor insomo respects,
and took good care of his cattle, but this
detect id his management spoiled all.
Working oxen, although far more pa
tionc and enduring under ill treatment
than the horse, yet are themselves suscep
tible to the influences of kindness, and
respond quito as readily to the encourag
ing efforti of the driver, as to tho lash.
One yoke of beautiful red cattle is now
recollected which scarcely knew what it
was to bc beaten, and were so well trained
t.i to lie driven tide by side around a
field, hawed and good, and backed with
out so much as a tow string to confine them
together. These cattle were subsequently
sold at auction, in order to settle up an
estate, and their admirable training run
them up full twen'y-five dollars above the
market price.
Oxen are much better in many respects
for working than horses some of which
advantages may bo summed up as follows.
They cost much loss in the first instance,
and are thoreforo more within the reacli
of men of moderate means. They are j
less liable to disease, and if an accident
occurs v.hich disables them from labor
they may bo converted into food. If a
horso should happen to break his leg, a
bullet might as well be put through his
head at onco, for ho is worthless ever af
ter : hut if tlm sama accident occum to an

coarser kind than the horse, and needs '
less attention in order to thrive. Hi will !
work in localities impossible for the horse, 1
and go forward patiently with labors i
which would chafo the other into utter
intractibility. j
No man who has etcr witnessed the two
kinds ot xmuials at work around a saw
mill yard, for initanje, can fail to luvo

one or two efforts they will either- break
their harness, or sjiliuter a whiffletree, or
balk, and refuse to draw at all. Now try
it with a yoke of well broken oxen, and
they will lay out their utmost strength
with the same gentleness and good will
for the twentieth time as they did the
first.
There arc a great variety of duties to be
performed upon the farm, where horses
are of superior advantage ; and there are 1
othorsin whichrorkiug oxen are altogether
preferable. Where the business ii suffi
etent for the employment of both, it is
advantageous to combine them; but where
a farmer can own but a binglo team, es
pecially in a liew country, oxen are
usually much the best.

I with the tii of a gooi tonlo and tha excrciso
of plain common icnat, they may bo obis to to

health. In order to accomplish thli desired
object, the true course to purtue ia certainly
that which tvlU produoe ft natural itato of
things at the least hatard of vital strength and
life. For this purposo, Dr. Hostetter has In
I troduced to this country a preparation boarlng
his name, which is not a new medicine, but one
that has been tried for years, glvlne satisfac
tion to nil who hftTO used It. Tho Hitters
operate powerfully upon the stomach, bowels,
and liver, restoring them to a healthy and
vigorous action, and thus, by tho simple pro
cess of strengthening nature, enable the pys
tem to triumph over disease.
For the cure of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Nau
sea, Flatulency, Loss of Appetlto, or any Bilious
Complaints, arising from a morbid inaction
of tho Stomach or Dowels, producing Cramps,
Dyscntory, Colic, Cholera Morbus, tic, these
Bitters have no equal.
Diarrhoea, dysoulcry or flux, bo generally con
tracted by new settlers, and caused principally
by the chango of water and diet, will be speedily
regulated by a brief uso of this preparation.
Dyspepsia, a discaso which is probably mora
prevalent, In all its various forms, than any
other, and tho causo of which may nlways
bo attributed to derangements of tho dlgestivo
organs, can bo cured witheut fail by using
HOSTETTEU'S STOMACH B1TTEB.S, as por
directions on tho bottle- For this disease every
physician will recommend Bitters of some kind ;
then why not use nn article known to be infal
lible ? All nations have their Bitters, as ft pre
ventive of discaso and strcngthener of tho sys
tem in general; and among them all tliero is
not to bo found a more healthy pottplo than
tho Germans, from whom this preparation cmS
natcd, based upon scientific experiments which
have tended to 1'rovo tho valuo of this great
preparation in the scalo of medical science.
Fkveb and Aoue This trying and provok
ing disease, which fixes its relentless grasp on
tho body of man, reducing him to a mcro sha
dow in a short timo, and rendering him phy
sically and mentally useless, can be driven
from the body by tho uso of HOSTETTEU'S
RENOWNED BITTERS. Further, none of the
above-stated diseases can bo contracted, even
in exposed situations, If the Hitters' arc used
ns per directions. And as they neither create
nausea nor offend tho palate, and render un
necessary any change of diet or interruption
of ordinary pursuits, but promote sound sleep
and healthy digestion, tho complaint is re
moved as speedily as is consistent with tho pro
duction of a thorough and permanent cure.
For Pertons in Advanced Yean, who aro
suffering from an enfeebled constitution and
infirm body, theso Bitters aro invaluable ns a
restorative of strength and vigor, and need
only bo tried to bo appreciated. And to a
mother while nursing theso Bitters arc indis
pensable, espccialiy where the mother's nour
ishment is inadequate to tho demands of tho
child, consequently her strength must yield,
and hero it is where a good tonlo, such ns
Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, is needed to impart
temporary strength and vigor to tho system.
Ladies should by all means try this remedy
for all cases of debility, and, before so doing,
should ask their physician, who, if he Is
acquainted with tho virtue of the Bitters, will
recommend their uso in all cases of weakness.
CAUTION. We caution tho pullie against using
any of tho many Imitations or counterfeits, but oak
for HOSTETTEU'S ClLEBRATED BTOMACn EiTTEnS,
and aoe that each bottle has the words "Dr. J.
Hostatter's Stomach Bittore" blown on tho fide
of the bottle, and .tamped on the tneutflic cap
covering the cork, and obaonre that our autogruph
signature is en the label.
