AGRICULTURAL. HILLING COltN, Ac. Until within n few years, farmers of tho North lmvo hilled their com and potatoes, nnd believed it necessary ; more recently they have found that roots may bo induced from tho epidermis of tho corn-stalk and tho earth hilled about it, but that this earth and thb roots it contains cannot contribute In sustaining tho corn-stalk, while it ma terially deducts from tho growth of tho tap-root and other deep permenting roots which can do best service in tho f ubsoil in tho bringing of inorganic matter to give strength and health to tho plant. That with flat cultivation corn-stalks will stand higher gales than when hilled up. With tho potato, a different rationale, but tcinl ing to tho samo result, has proved true. The original tuber throws up stems, and instead of tho potato being a tuberous rooted plant, (as moit of our books in error call it,) it is a tuberous stcmplant, for no potato over grew upon a potato root, they all grow upon stem ; and there fore the original seed, when it furnishes tho first set of tubers, does all that nature intended If wo earth up the stem, wo cause a now oxotio growth from tho stem of tho now tubers, and theso tako part of the pabulum namely, tho starch contaiued in the original tuber, all of which should bo given to the forming of tho first tubers. For this reason, we find potatoes, when hilled, giving unripo results in part, and potatoes of all sizes ; whereas, when cul tivated flatly, so as to form no new tubers, tho crop is aliko or nearly so in size, all these originally set perfect, and botli in pounds measure, the crop is greater and loss liable to disease. Now all the truths that arc to bo found in this practice in the growing of corn, is applicable in degree, as wo apprehend, to tho growth of cotton. Wo can sec no reason why cotton thould bo grown on raised beds, unless it bo to furnish a largo amount of surface. And if this be the true rationale, we thould recommend such a treatment of the soil as would change its color, ratiier than the adoption of theso raised beds. M'orking Farmer. I - M UNLOADING HAY. 3Ir. L. F. Seott, of Connecticut, com municates in a late number of tho Country Gentleman, his inodo of unloading hay from tho cart all at ones, which we pi at now for tho information of our readers, in order that it may reach them in tiino for tho approaching haying season. He says : " My plan is, two ormoro endless ropes spread on tho cart rigging, and load on them, and when in tho barn, bring tho ropes together on tho top, on a btrong double hook made fast to a stout rope ; this rope may run througli tackle, with a horse outside, similar to the plan of un loading with a horso fork, while a man with a guy-rope over a pulley, back side of the mow, can direct it wLore lie choose. Then let down and unhook the rope3 on one side, and pull them out with the same power that hoisted it. " Another way, to hoNt without the horse, is to have a wheel, similar to what merchants uso for hoisting hogsheads of molasses and other merchandise, hung in the ridge of the barn, and operated in tho samo way, with guy-rope as in tho other plan. Where a barn is built with the floor on one sido the barn, with short mid dle beams, tho wheel can be hung partly over tho mow, so that it will need less pow er on the guy-rope." WORK FOIl JUNE. Tho hos and the cultivator would bo appropriate emblems of tho work for the farm this month. Vegetation now pushes forward with rapid growth. Not only are tho staple crops taking firmer hold of the soil, and expanding with cheering promise, but ragweed, daisey, dock, thistles, and a numerous horde of foul weeds also feel tho quickening sunshine, and send out their - , hardy root.3 to rob UlO Soil and vex tho husbandman TI.pbo nrn tn Tip snlwlnnrl , - " - " , anil, scarcely less importaut, tho soil neeils frequent stirring, to keep it in right mo chanical condition. (it eorao vctloil, crcry mem ber of tho human family is subject to ditcn'o or disturbance of tho bodily functions! but, with tho aid of ft good tonlo and tho cxorclxo of plain common ennsc, they may bo nblo ro to rcgulalo tho Ryitem as to secure permanent health. In order to accomplish this d,lrcd object, tho true course to pursuo Is certainly that which 1,111 produce ft natural state of things at tho least haiard of vital strength nnd life. For this purpose, Dr. Hosteller las in troducod to this country n preparation bearing lils name, which Is not n new medicine, but one that has been tried for years, giving satisfac tion to all who havo used it. Tho Hitters opcrato powerfully upon the stomach, bowels, nnd llrcr, restoring ttrem to ft healthy and rigorous action, and thus, by tho eimplo pro cess of strengthening nature, cnablo the sys tem to triumph over disease. i or tho euro ol Dyspepsia, inuigcstton, nau sea, Flatulency, Loss of Appetite, or any Bilious Complaints, arising from a morbid inaction of tho Stomach or liowcls, producing Cramps, Dysentery, Colic, Cholera Morbus, &c., these Bitters have no equal. Diarrhoea, dysentery or flux, so generally con tracted by new settlers, nnd caused principally by tho chango of water and diet, will bo speedily regulated by n brief uso of this preparation. Dyspepsia, ft discaso which is probably more prevalent, in All its various forms, than any other, nnd tho causo of which may always bo attributed to derangements of tho digestiro organs, can bo cured without fall by using HOSTETTErt'S STOMACH BITTERS, as per directions on tho bottle- For this disease eTery physician will roeommend Bitters of some kind then why not uso an article known to be infal lible ? All nations have their Bitters, as a pre ventive of disease and strengthened of tho sys tem in general; and nmong them all thero is not to bo found a more healthy people than tho Germans, from whom this preparation ema nated, based upon scientific experiments which havo tended to provo tho value of this great preparation in the scalo of mcdicnl science. FKVEtt and Aouc This trying nnd provok ing disease, which fixes its relentless grasp on the body of man, reducing him to ft mere sha llow in ft short time, nnd rendering him phy sically and mentally useless, can bo driven from tho body by tho uso of HOSTETTEIt'S RENOWNED BITTERS. Further, nono of tho nbovo-statod diseases can bo contracted, even in exposed situations, if tho Bitters are used as per directions. And ns they neither crcato nausea nor offend tho palato, and render un necessary any chango of diet or interruption of ordinary pursuits, bnt promoto sound sleep nnd healthy digestion, tho complaint is re moved as speedily ns is consistent with the pro duction of a thorough and permanent cure. Far Pertont in Adeanecd Ytari, who ro suffering from an enfeebled constitution and infirm body, theso Bitters aro invaluable as a restorative of strength and vigor, nnd need only bo tried to bo appreciated. And to n mother wlillo nursing these Bitters nro indis pensable, especially wbcro tho mother's nour ishment is inadequato to tho demands of tho child, consequently her strength must yield, nnd hero it is where a good tonic, such ns Ilostcttcr's Stomach Bitters, is needed to impart temporary strength and vigor to the Bystem. Ladies should by all means try tbis remedy for nil cases of debility, and, beforo so doing, should ask their physician, who, if ho is acquainted with tho virtue of tho Bitters, will recommend their uso in all cases of weakness. CAUTI01I. Wo caution the publlo against using any of tho many imitations or counterfeits, hut ak for ItosrETTsn's Cr.t-winATED Stomach DiTrnns, and fco that each botllo has tho words "Dr. J. Ilostcttcr's tomah Bitters" blown on tho siilo of tho bottle, and stomped on tho nittnllic. enp covering tho cerk, and observe that our uutognqih signature is on tho label. 'E beg leave to call the ntten tion of the Trade, and more especially the Physicians of the country, to two of thc most popu lar remedies now before thc public. We refer to Ur rims. 31'Lnne's Crlcbrntcd Vermifuge and Liver Pills. We do not recommend them as universal Cure-alls, but simply for what their name purports, viz.: THE VERMIFUGE, For expelling Worms from the human system. It lias also been administered with thc most satis factory results to various Animals subject to Worms. TIIE LIVER PILLS, For the cure of Liver Complaints, all Bilious Derangements, Sick Head-Ache, &c. In cases of Fever and Ague, preparatory to or after taking Qui nine, they almost invariably make a speedy and permanent cure. As specifics for the above men tioned diseases, they are Unrivaled, and ne"" known :o fail when ad ministered in accordance with thc directions. Their unprecedented popularity has induced thc proprietors, Fleming Brothers, Pittsburgh, Pa. to dispose of their Drug business, in which they have been success fully engaged for thc last Twenty Years, and they will now give their undivided time and attention to their manufacture. And being de termined that Dr. M'l.anc's Cele brated Vermifuge and Liver Pills shall continue to occupy the high position they now hold nmong the great remedies of thc day, they will continue to spare neither time nor expense in procuring the Iks: and Purest material, arid com pound them in the most thorough manner.
