A gentleman who resides in tbo town of Elmore, Sloquange county, is, as ho do scribes himself, very pnsartain in politics, and besides that, is tho most onsartain practical joker we havo heard of late. Hero li one of his jokes : Tho gentleman was in his store ono Sunday morning, preparing for the duties of tho day, when tho deacon entered. An unfortunate pack of cards was lying on the counter, and tho deacon, as in duty bound, remonstrated with tho joker on his wlla- nous practice. Tho latter admitted that it was at least an idle waste of time, and taking tho cards in his hand moralized on tho subject just as well and warmly as the deacon. At tho same timo allowed a few cards to fall here and thero on tho counter, lying very much in tho shape of tricks, and looking as if tho two had been "taking a band." At this juncture another membor of the church came in (tho post office was in tho store,) and all at onco the joker placed his finger on a couple of cards on the counter, exclaiming : " Now, deacon, I tell you this won't do. "Tho Queen always takes. Jack, and ten the nino, and so down, and if you don't attend you will never leard tho game. That Jack is a good card, my Queen takes it, besides ono on count for game" " Why, neighbor," exclaimed the hor rified deacon, "what on earth do you mean by all that?" "Exactly what I say," was the reply ; " tho Queen takes the Jack and its mine you might havo trumped with it aud saved it long ago j now, this Jack, with low and the game, puts mo out." At this moment tho gentleman' from Menuango county turned round, preten ded for the first moment to notice the brother deacon who had entered, looked confused, dropped tho cards and vanish sd. Of course the daccon was caught play ing cards on buntlay. lie was cited to appear before tho church for his back sliding, and as tho ovidenco was complete, would have been convicted and severely punished, in spite of all his protestations of ignorance, had not our acquaintance of the town of Elmore made his appearance in th nick of time, told a round, unvar nishod talo, and procured for him an ac quittal. It is said to this day tho deacon has an increasing horror of cards, and though ho feols a conviction that tho " Queen will take tho Jach," and tho Jack can tako the deacon, yet ho has an" utter aversion to giving his " high low Jack." COAL ASHES AS A MAXUltB. AVo are frequently asked, "Are coal ashes of any benefit as a manure." That they aro of some benefit, thero can be no doubt. Numerous analyses of coal ashes have been made. Wo havo now before us analyses of ashes from seven different kinds of coal. They vary considerably in composition, but on an average contain about 45 per cent, of tilica, 40 of alumina and oxide of iron, 12 of sulphate of lime or plaster, S of magnesia, and 1 of phosp horic acid. Commercially, coal ashes have no value as a manure. But still they aro worth something, and ought not to be thrown away. We have seen them produce quite a marked effect on grass laud perhaps a much from their action as a mulch as from any other cause. On stiff clay lands, they are beneficial by rendering the soil more friable and permeable to atmospheric in fluences. It is said they are good as a top-drcs'ing for lucerne and red clover. They aro frequently mixed with night soil for tho purposo of absorbing unpleasant odors. They are often employed in the garden, more for tho purpose of forming walks and to proven' tho ravages of mice, than as a r , . ., manure. wwibaiiiQ vujii uuiHl 11 .IU , 1 . 1 1 it ii t-wa acuta oaiu iu iui vrai u men uruwiu ,1 , , A , , 1 as luuj uuvu u iuuuuuuj 10 nusoru aim rc tain heat from tho sun. For radishei, on a rather heavy soil, coal a&hes arc very boneCcial. In tho Gardener's Magazine, vol. 11, page 400, au expeiiment is given where coal ashes wero sown on a row of turnips, which produced a heavier crop than another row manured with well-rotted dung.
