A happy little boy w.n little Frotl Ji Fe
lix happy because he van good almost
idolized by fond parents as their first-l)oru
tho pet of the household, loved by all his
schoolmates, and a general favorite ; in
deed, 'N'onc knew liim but to love him,
N'or named hiui but tu praise.'
Tho halcyon days of childhood passed,
and Freddie, a fino promising youth, bado
fuir to becomo an ornament to society
with popularity undiminished, his tunny
smilo, cheerful mien, and gentlemanly
bearing insured hiui a cordial welcome
wherovcr he appeared.
Ono evening he attended a gay wedding
party, where "the glasses sparkled on tho
build ,-,'-ainV-Hhc wine was ruby bright;''
he was repeatedly iuvitcd to drink, but as
often refused, and not until the fair brido
insisted on a health did ha assent.
Fatal glass ! it was the first would to
God it could have been the lait. He little
thought in drinking a health to the bride,
he was drinking ruin to his own immortal
soul.
Let mo entreat you my dear boys, to be
ware of the first falsa step. That, once
takon how rapidly, how smoothly wo glide
down, down, to eternal perdition.
Poor Fred I poor fellow ! was echoed
and reechoed by former frieuds, who were
dropping off ono by one, wiioly i-hunning
the inebriate.
His devoted mother, with heart wither
ing in her bosom, vainly tried to conceal
his fault, and loved him more dearly (since
deserted by others.
His father, all his bright hopes blighted,
threatened to disown him; but tho unfor
tunate son promised to reform, and did for
a' while abstain.
In tho mean time he married an amia
blo, pious woman, but his future was paved
with broken vows and ill-kept resolutions.
Poor Fred, fallen and degraded, has!
passed through all tho dark and gloomy
cones of a drunkard's life. J
His windows, with broken pano3, have
been btuflfed with old rags, until the bright
sunlight was shut out, and with it health
and happiness ; this wretched abode of
misery was made more sorrowful by tho
cries of his children for bread, and the bit
tcr tears rofting'tlown his wife's palo cheeks
onco blooming in health, now pallid and
sunken from want. 1
Heart-broken wife! the will hunger and
thirtt no more forever; her last tears of
anguish aro sed ; i-ho rests from her cares
on the bosom of her Saviour.
You think now, my dear boys, Fred is a
reformed man ; you think ho could not
witness such a dl-tres and f-till pursue tho
downward courso that caused it ; you mutt
remember tho strong fetters of intemper
ance aro hard to break.
Ilis children have deserted him ; ho is
now almoht friendless and alono in tho
world ; ono faithful heart still clings to him
and proys without ceasing for his reforma
tion, not without hopo that her prayers
may yet bo heard and happily answered.
From that first fatal glass at tho wed
ding party wo can dato tho downfall of
the victim of intemperance.
I trust all my dear young readers will
tako warning, and "Look not on the wino
when U is red. At tho last it bitcth lika n
scrpuut, and tlLeeih uka an adder. '

there is always a market for them at high

Diarrhrca, dy sent cry or flux, so generally con
tracted by now settlers, and caused principally
by tho chango of wat er nnd diet, will bo speedily
regulated by a brief uso of this preparation.
Dyspepsia, a disease which is probably moro
prevalent, in all its vat Ions forms, than any
other, and tho causo of which may always
bo attributed to derangements of tho dlgcstlvo
organs, can bo cured without fail by using
IIOSTETTEU'8 STOMACH UITTIUtS, as per
directions on tho bottlo. For this discaso every
physician will recommend Hitters of 6ome kind i
then why not uso nn nrtlclo known to bo infal
lible f All nations havo their Bitters, as a pre
ventive of diseaso and strcngthener of tho sys

not to bo found a moro healthy pcoplo than

preparation in tho acalo of medical science.
Feveh and Aodk. This trying nnd provok
ing disease, which fixes its relentless grasp on i

necessary any chango of diet or interruption
of ordinary pursuits, but promote sound sleep
nnd healthy digestion, tho complaint is rc
movod as speedily as is consistent with the pro
duction of a thorough and permanent euro.
For Persona in Advanced Yean, who oro
suffering from an enfeebled constitution and
infirm body, theso Ditters aro invaluablo as a
restorative of strength and lgor, and need
only bo tried to bo appreciated. And to a
mother whilu nursing theso Ditters aro indis

ishment is inadequato to tho demands of tho
child, consequently her strength must yield,
nnd hero it is whoro ft good tonic, such as
Hosteller's Stomach Hittcra, is ncedod t o impart
temporary strength nnd vigor to tho system.
Ladles should by all means try this remedy
for all cases of debility, nnd, before so doing,
should ask their physician, who, if ho is
iicryuainted with tho virtuo of tho Ditters, will
recommond their use in all cases of weakness.
