Can Sugar be Made?
Messrs. Belcher & Co., cxtensivo sugar
Refiners, of St. Louis, stato or it may only
bo asserted for them, that it is impossible
to grain the syrup of tho Chincso sugar
cane. Ifitbotruo that they havo mado
this statement, or that it has been printed
by their authority it will not bo borne out
by the experiments mado in this vicinity.
.Mr. Lovericg, of tho well known Grm of
J. F. Lovering & Co., perhaps tho most
extensive, as they certainly aro tho most
celebrated, sugar-rofiner3 in this country
has mado from canes grown upon his own
premises, in this word, as wtjaro informed,
nn excellent article of sugar, dry and beau
tiful color; and ho estimates tint tho cane
will produce one thousand pounds per acre.
As a sugar production this will da very
well j while the experiment proves that
whatever may bo the character of tho
syrup in Missouri, affected as it doubtless
5s, by the soil and climate, it possesses
sufficient gradulating properties hero to
make tho manufaeturo of sugar a source of
profit.
Wc hopo to havo moro in detail, the
facts connected with Mr. Lovering's ex.
periment. It is of groat importance at
this time, that they should bo laid before
tho public.
Banking Around Fruit Trocs
Wo aro pleased to sco that so many arc
now recommending tho practice which we
havo advocated for some years past to
guard fruit trees from mice in winter.
One minuto a trco will bo time enough
to bo spent in protecting orchards through
the winter, from tho ravages of field mice.
Any common laborer on a farm
competent to the task of banking around
fruit trees. If thoy woro mulched last
spring, tho mulching need not be removed.
Take a spade and bury it, and continue on
till tho bank around each tree is ten or
twelve inches high'.
This will drive tho mico away to seek
better quarters unless your trees happen
to stmd near an old wall, where mico do
congregate. In such a case the bank
should be mide higher.
This bank serves another purposo in
addition to a mico guard it keeps the tree
tfpright, and saves tho cost of stako and
the injury which withes arc likely to inflict
-.vlion tho tree is tied to them
This bank should be levelled in tho
spring, yot.not so as to mako a dish for
water to stand around the tree. No kind
of treo should stand in water for a einglo
minute after a shower is over,
