Mulca vs. Ilorsos.
Tim mulo properly attended to, will
livo tlio ordinary life! tlio allotted timo of
ninn, tlireo scoro and ton yoaw. His lnbor
can bo confidently calculated on lor forty
years.
Tho following figures bliow tLo compi
rativo gain of winking lmilw, insload of
liortcs, for foity ycari :
Oost 5 horses cvory 10 years, ma
king SO at SI 00 each 82,000
Cost 5 mules each SH!0 (100
Ilalnnco in favor of niulcp, firet cost Sl.-lOO
Leaving tlio interest out, and tlio trou
tlo nnd expenso of breaking or training to
work, nnd tlio monoy sunk liy false horses,
leaves a first cost in ImiUdco of employing
mules of fourteen hundred dollars. This
fact is uneontrovertablo. Many nro
opposed to uiulo labor from thinking they
nro stubborn and difficult to manago. This
is an error, for, if properly broken nnd
matched, they aro easier managed, can
pull as much, or more, and nro more to bo
deponded on than h r-cs; for when ono
has a well matched team of mules that all
pull together, which is tho groat desidera
tum in all teams, thoy nro fixed in this
respect for life ; whorcas almost every year,
from tho death of ouo or more of your
liorfcs, you havo to supply a new one.
This destroys tho unity of actinn of your
4.03m, and often it is a Ion;; timo before
thoy act in concert. They act with diffi
culty, not regularity ; potnetimcs rcfuso to
start, and again lo quick, &c. This often
ruins ftlfo older part of tlio team, atd
destroys the unity of action so necessary
iu a long, steady pull j consequently tlio
weight of tho load thoy aro ablo ti carry
is ono third less than they should haul.
Jfut independent of tlio Grst cost, the
saving of food will show a greater disparity
between tho expenses of mulo labor and tho
employment of horso power. Tho mulo
docs not cat nioio than one-third of the
gr-tiu that thc horse requires, and can be
fed on fodder or coarso hay not averaging
more than half tho price of timothy ; so
putting the support of each horso at tho
very low sum of S40 per year, tho live
horses will cost ?20U, so that to rate tho
mulo at (ino-holf tho cost of tlio horso, will
mako tho five mules coit but S100 per nn.
num. So hero is a clear giiu of S 1,000 iu
the forty years from the saving of food
alone. To this add tho SI, 101) saved iu
first cost, makes a certain saving of?5,-100; I
to this should bo added tho interest on
half this -amount for twenty years, which
is tho fair average, SU,249. Q'ho whole,
added together, leaves at tho end of tho
forty years the handsome little fortuno of
"89,010 often moro than a man in a life,
timo realizes from 'a large farm.
Tho data on which tho calculations aro
based is made purposely low and in favor
of tho horso, and 1 am convinced that tho
mule will not cost moro than ono third per
annum that tho horse docs ; and I am also
certain that no horso oan be kept in proper
working order on less than S00 per year.
This leaves a largo margin, sufficient to
supply the accidental loss of two or three
Jnulcs in tho forty years.
Tho moral of tbc above is, that all farm
mork nnd heavy hauling can bo Letter dono
ai ono fourth the cost for motivo power,
and less than one-half the prico of food, by
mules than horses; therefore, prudenoo and
economy would seem to dictate that every
fa rmer chould employ mules in preference
to Loreee.
Cliineso Sugar Cano.
Wo wcro shown on Friday a samplo of
molasses made from the sirup of tho Sugar
Cane, raised by E. L. Monro, of Mount
.Joy. lie states that he planted about four
thousand canes on a quarter of an aero of
ground, and from each cane ho got ona half
pint of sirup, Taking 10,000 canes, on
nn aero, there would bo ono thousand
gallon of molasses; therefore, from ono
aero of cane, ono hundred and twenty-five
gallons of molasses oan bo made. It will
easily bo seen from the above estimate,
that, ihat it is far moro remunerative for
farmers to raise the cano and froni.it mako
molasses, than to raise torn or wheat.
Besides, tho stalks, after thoy havo been
used, can bo fed lo tho cattlo, which relish
tbem much more than corn ; besides theso
nro much moro nutritious. Tlio sirup
shown us has a fino flavor and i3 equal to
tho best molasses. As this has been tho
first attempt that Mr. Mooro has made, it
is not as cloar as tho best mdasses. Seve
ral farmers around Mr. Mooro havo plant
ed the cano with tho samo roiult, and some
havo been moro succosaful than ho has.
.Lancaster Times,
Tode Tiiouuirr About. Oan a farmer
find aDy better investment for his money
obovo what is required for tho support and
education of his family, than to expend it
upon his farm, in tho impeovcraent of his
stock, in planting treos, in draining,
enriching, improving and ornamenting tho
place ho has chosen as tho Mono of his
labors and tho centre of his comforts J
Gather fruit in dry weather, and whon

roil ALL THE PUEtOSES OF A
FAMILY PHYSIC.
There has long existed a rmMIc demanj for nn
effecthe purgative pill which could be relied on atf
sure and pel fcctly safo in its operation. This hits'
been prcpuied lo meet that demand, and nn exten
sive trial of its virtues ha, conclusively shown with
what success it accomplishes the pin-pose designed.
It is easy to mako a physical pill, but not easy to
mako the best of all pills one which should have
none of tho objection,, but all tho advantages, of
every other. This has been attempted here, and
with what success we would respectfully submit to
the public decision. It has been unfortunate for
the patient hitherto that almost every purgative
medicine i, acrimonious and iriltating to the bow
els. r This is not. Many or them produce so much
RripioR pain and icvulsion in the sjstcm us to more
than counterbalance the Rood to be domed from
them. Theso jrirYi produce no irritation or pain,
unless it arise from a previously existing obstruc
tion or derangement in the bowels. Being purely
vegetable, no harm can arise from their use in any
quantity ; but it is letter that nny n.dicine should
be taken Judiciously. Minule directions for their
use in the several disease, to which they are ap
plicable ore giien on the box. Among tho cone
plaints which hate been speedily cured by theni,'xre
may mention Lii er Complaint.'in its various forms
of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor and Loss of Ap
petite, LIstlcssncM, Irritability, Bilious Headache,
Bilious Fever.Tcver ond Ague, l'ain in tho Side'
and Loins j for, in truth, all these nro hut the con
sequence of diseased action in the liur. As an"
aperient they afl'ord prompt and sure relief in Cos
titcness, 1'iles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrofula
and Scurvy, Cold, with spreness of tho body, Ulcers'
and impurity of the blood, Irregularities j in short,
any und eiery coso where a nurgatlve is reouired.
Jhey haio nlso produced some singularly suc
cessful cuies in Itheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel,
Rrysipelas, l'olpitation of tho Heart, rains in tho
Back, Stconnch, and Side, 'ihey should be freely
taken in tho spring of tho year, to purify the blood
and preparo the system for the change of scasdns.'
An occasional dose stimulates tho stpTYineh nWit
bowels into healthy action, and restores the appe-ij
u u 'Kuri xi.ey pinny me oiooa,ana, oy iofjir
stimulant action on the circulatory systom, rcco
vato the strength of tho body, and restoro the
wasted nr diseased energies of the whole organism.
Hence an occasional dose is advantageous, even
though no serious derangement exist, but un
necessary dosing should neier bo cairicd too far,
as every purgetive medicine rrduces the strength.

Tilts remedy ha, svon for itself such notoriety
