AaABSlZopencdthc mcctiu,; by somo highly
interesting remarks upon a now family of
fishes and their habits.
Dr. Uhables T. Jacksos gavo a brief
description of tho bituminous coal formation
of ElK County, l'eoniiyhaniaf which he
had been engaged in cip'oring during the
month of June last. Ho ubserrcd that the'
great bitumonous coal basin or trough ex
tends from the northwestern border ot
Pennsylvania, to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as
indicated on Mr. Jules Marcou's Qcological
lnap of tho United States.
'i'ho northern portion of this lm?in is of
great economical valuo on account of its
being the nearest to Lake Eric, one of the
greatest markets for coals, which arc requi
red fur, navigation on all tho great lakes,
and for tho furnaces and gas works, as well
its domestic use I'cr fuel, on both tho U. S.
and Canada sides of theso lakes. Do re
marked that statistics showed a larg. r
amount of tonnage on the lakes than exists
on tho Atlantic coast of this ouitry, and
that steam navigation would certainly
greatly incrcaso upon the lakes where
coals could bo obtained at a reasonablo cost,
as will soon bo the caso when the western
p jrtion of the Sunbury and Erie R.tilroad,
now under contract, is compljted, which
would bo done in the course of two years.
Since the recent explorations wero mudo
into tho extensive coal formation of Elk
county, Pa, the Directors of this importaut
Railroad havo ordered the road to bo laid
amid these coal fields, and the consequence
of this movement will soon be lelt in the
augmented value of the cod lauds.
The par icular region explored by Dr.
Jackson is known as the tiidgway Land and
Coal Company's property, some U7,UU0
acre3 of land, all situate! tu tin coal region.
Five or six bech of coal underlie, this soil,
and they generally dip only from two to
six feet in thickness. Most of the large
hartal n m iiniltainrllPil nnil nnlo tl,o amill
ones are here and there denuded by valleys
ot excavation.
The deep ravines, or runs, expose somo
of the outcrops of theluger beds on tho
southeast side of tko lulls. Un the north
west they are still deeply covered with
rocks, the sandstones and bituminous shales.
Each of these coal beds is overlaid with
a stratum of 8 or 10 inchc3 of slaty canned
coal, and they all rest on Cro clays. Iron
ores, namely carbonate ot iron and brown
bicmatite, abound tho former in tho tire
clays and tho latter in the superincumbent
shales. lut tew lossii plants are found in
these shales, and only tho scales, Cm, audi
tills of fishesin tho fluty canncl coal, which
appears to have a fine aqueous sediment of
water-logged vogetable matter.
A bed of buff-colored limestono occurs
beneath tho principal bed of coal, and is
sin or ten feet thick.. This limestone
contains small fossil bivalve shells, not yet
named,
Tho Ridgway land thus contains coals,
irrn ors, limestone and sandstone, with au
abundance of clay suitable for fire-proof
bricks. All tho facilities for the reduction
of iron exists on the spot, and noon the
means ef transportion of the coal, and
metal to market will bo supplied. The
country is elevated about. IGUO feet above
the sea, and i.s in lat. 41 .'Jo N., and long,
1.10 V,,ot Washington, and is remarkably
healthy.
Tho following analysis of the coals, iron
ore and limestone have been irudo by Dr.
Jackson, since his return to Boston.
