Amalgamation of Potatoos.
A pamphlet has been published in Scot
land, by a farmer named Craig, on tho
potato disease and iU euro. By planting
three different kinds of pHatoes together
last ysar, very favorable results wcro
achieved. Two out of tho threo varieties
planted, had boon, on previous occasions,
affected by the disease j all wcro found to
bo perfectly healthy and sound when dug,
and cxpcricnco has shown that they kept
well dutinj tho winter. He believes that
tho potato disoaso may bo safely attrib
uted to tho violation of ono of tho laws of
nituro, and that the generation of tho mal
ody is occaisoncd by tho plants being too
ciuiciy area, or, m otuor words, by " sab.
breeding," t. e., " breeding in and in."
ieo lesson wo derive from this is, that
two or moro varieties of seed potatoes
eiiouitf bo planted jn each hill.
What say our potato philosophers to
tms i it tuo argument or objection applies
to potatoes, why not to turnips and to all
otner plants I nnd why not to grain, grass,
fruiu, nnd so forth I What say our far
mers I shall tho seed bo mixed? Hero is

solve it I
It is probable that somo plants may.
dwindle away, degenerate, and finally "run
out," and that they require crossing but
rthy not cross them on fresh seed of their
own sort or variety ? 03 among pure-blooded

Chinese Sugar Cano.-A Caution.
The notoriety given to tliis now plant
has caused a large demand for tbo eccil in
almost every section of tho country. As
is always tho caso under such circumstan
ces, (peculators aro abroad, and impositions
Mill bs practised upon the unsuspecting.
Tho Prairie Farmer thus cautious its read
ers, and wo can do curs no better service
than by quoting his remarks :
" We deem it our duty to caution our
friends, that in purchasing seed thoy should
look well to what they buy. There are
dealers who aro honest men, and will sell
pure seed or none. Tho demand for this
seed which is enormous, opens a field for1
deception. There arc men unscrupulous
enough to gr in and win a harvest. Wo
have received a specimen of peed closely
resembling the Sugar Millet, called tho
Chocolate or Coffee seed. It is grown to
a considerable extent in some of the South
crn States, and its seeds burned and used
as a substitute for coffeo and ch'ocolite.
We have never seen it growing, and un
fortunately know nothing of its habits or
character, except tint it is said to resemble
tho broomcorn when growing, and seeds
ih tho samo manner. Wo Iiavo soino of tho
peed beforo us. It is about tho site of the
Sugar Millet, (sorgho secure) but flatcned
and smooth, wcil-ttho Sugar Millet is oval
in shape, and villous. Wo havo no doubt
hut this same chocolate seed will bo offered
for salo rb millet If any of our readers
havo had experienco with this chocolate
corn, wo will bo obliged if thoy will furnish
ns with its history and pecu'iarities.
Meantime look well to your purchases,1'
