Sugar. In tho reign of Henry IV. a
bout two. centuries, and a half ano, stiirar
.was so scarce in France, that apothecaries
sold it by the ounce, at a price rqual to what
is now given for quinine. In the yuar
1700 the.qonsumption of .sugar did not ex
ceed 2,170,000 pounds annually, which
was about three ounces per Read, the pop
vtav'ou then being about 1H, 000,000. The
great .consumption of sugtr dates only from
the, eighteenth century. In the, year 1780,
49,010,000 pounds were consumed . in
Fiance alone.
The Vicksbuig Sentinel states with con
fidence, that a personal reconciliation has
been. brought about between. General Jack
ion and Mr. Galtioun.

For the last len days we have seen this
in almost every exchange paper; so we
must not fall behind the age, arid neglect
publisuing what the world finds so good and
new. We remember, however, when we
were once 'but a very little Ud,' this puz
zle Used to be one ol our favorites, and wii
were proud ol the manner in which we
could rattle it oil' from the tip of the tongue,
to iho manifest wonderment. of other jum

and after a while rise from their graves
again. If there is novelty in this, ihesolu.
