day fixed by tlie constitution. A quorum
of both IIuti303, were present. The pro
ceedings oflho first day, wo havo copiod
from the Daily Pennsylvania Intelligencer.
On Fednesday, al 12 o'clock a message
from tho Governor, was received in both
houses, copies of which wo hnvj received
in an Extra Koystone, from Messrs Head
ley, & Snyder, to whom we tender onr
tkanks. The length of the message, and
the lateness of the hour when receiving
prevents its publication this week. JVa
shall give it entire in our next.

Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1841.
At the honr of twelve, Mr. Korr of Wash
ington rose and stating that as this was the
day fixed by the Cnnstituion fur tho conven
ing of tho Legislature, moved that the Clerk
be roqucslcd to open and read the returns
handed in by the Secretary of tho Commen
wealth.
In accordance therewith, the Clerk open
oil and read the returns from all tho counties
except Butler. Mr CRABB of the city,
handed a certiticate from the Prethonotary
of Butler county, from which it appeared
that Mr. Isaac S. Pearson had been duly
elected to represent that county. There
beiiisr no exception, the Clerk ndded his
name to the list.
On motion of Mr. Crabb the house pro
ceeded to the election of Spoakor;lhe Clerks
to act as tellers.
The following is the vote:

The SPEAKER was then handed to the
Chair by Mossrs.BARR and BRODHEAD
when he returned thanks Tor the honor so
unexpectedly conferred upon him in the fol
lowing neat and hnndsomo terms.
Gentlemen : For tho honor which you
have so respectfully conferrod upon me in
elevating mo to so highly important and
hanorible a post, I return yon my siucerest
and warmest acknowledgements.
The hotior.gentlemcn, is much enhanced
by the lact that there are many Members of
this House much more able to dischargo the
duties of Speaker than myself. But, I thin K
I can safely say.that none among you would
aoaire more sincerely to perform ihoso du-
ties with, faimess.integrity and impartiality.
I feel, gentlemoi. deeply, tho ombarrass-
ment'of the situation into which your kind
ness has thrown mo,nnd shall not.thercforo
make any protracted remarks, Termit me,
however, to say, that all the ability and on
ergy of which I may bo possessed, shall be
exerted to repay you,by a faithful dischargo
nf my duties, for tho distinction with which
you have been pleased to honor me.
Again I beg you, gentlemen, to accipt
my acknowledgements, and bclievo that I
will use my best endeavors to discharge the
duties uf speakor with fidelity.
THE SPEAKER then requested Mr
FLENNIKEN of Fayette to administer thu
customary oath of office, alter which the
different members were sworn in by th
Speaker.
-Messrs. FLENNIKEN and CLARK,
were appointed a committee on 'the part of
tho House, to inform tho Governor that
their body was organized and ready to ro
ceivc anr communication which he might
be pleased to lay before them.
When on motion '.ho IIouso adjourned
until to-morrow morning at ten o'clock.

Agreeable to tho constitution and to cus
tom, the Senate was called to order by the
Speaker (Mr. KINGSBURY) at 3 o'clock
P. M. when the returns of the election of
