sistent with our democratic principles. Is he hon
est is ho capable, aud will ho obey tho voice of his
constituents, shall bo tho leading enquiries as to the
qualifications of a candidate for office. If capable,
honest and willing to acknowledge tho supreme will
of the majority, every individual in society B'.iall
have an equal claim on us for our countenance and
support. Wc abhor all faction and combination of
individual interest to accomplish individual purpo
poses. Every thing of that sort, shall receive Irom
us a most hearty and decided opposition. Honesty,
economy and strict accountability in all public
functionaries, and their disbursements of the public
moneys, shall be freely examined and fully discuss
ed.
Tho Gazctto will sustain the administration of
tho General Government, upon the principles pur
sued by its present patriotic and enlightened chic-
znigistratc Martin Van Burcn, and will cheerfully
lend its support to his re-election, to complete his
measuio of two terms of office, inaccurdanco with
the uniform practice exercised towards his republi
can predecessors. In di?cussing national policy,
wc shall advoeate at all times every measure tending
to strengthen the bonds of tho common Union, and
to promote the peace, security and happiness of tho
whole, fo faros it can be dono without compromit
ting any rights that may belong to an individual
stato as n, separate and indcpcndcnl sovereignty.
The Gazette will also support the administration
cf our worthy Executive of Pennsylvania Gover
nor Potter, nnd its editors will ever cherish the prin
ciples which triumphed in his election, and which
through all the desperate and dangerous machina
tions put in requisition to defeat his inauguration,
by a reckless and abandoned party, established in
tho executive chair, as the land marks ofourrepubli
can safety and happiness. It shall also bo the study
of tho editors to promote tho best interest of our vast
chain of internal improvements, and urging to a
speedy completion all tho links necessary to secure
its immense connection, and to turn it to lasting
and profitable use.
Our foreign relations shall bo attended to, and
tho public seasonably advised of every transaction
abroad, calculated- to affect their political interests,
or awaken in private life a spirit of enquiry and re
search in the various fields of philosophy, mechan
ics or literature.

maling arrangement for commencing our now vo
lume under the mot favorable auspices. The con
stantly incrcasinc patronage of the Chronicle in well
calculated to prduco corresponding efforts on the
part of tho publishers, and it is therefore that we ate
determined to sparo.ncithcr pains norcxpenso in the
determination to render this family ncwspapir at
least equal, if not suprrior to any similar publica
tion in this country The fourth volume will com
mence on the lSlh of May ensuing, nnd for that

for elegant und interesting extracts from European
periodicals, and the works of popular English wri
ters, have been greatly enmtged. wo nro now m
tho receipt ofmoitof the leading London, Edin
burgh and Paris periodicals, nnd from timo to time
shall avail ourselves ot their contents, as they may
rseem calculated to amuse or instruct.
In'addition to these lealurcs, the new volume
will contain a variety of intcicsting wood cut m
gravings, as well as all the most fashionablo ballads,
melodies and songs, set to music, so that tho " exn-
tier" portion of our readers may feel assured of ob
taining through this medium every thing that pos
sesses interest or merit in tho musical world.
Ourobject ill short throughout our futuro courso
will bo to increase tho claims and merit, and thus
enhance tho reputation of our journal diligent from
week to week to cull out every thing calculated to
entertain or inform, and at the same timo careful to
exclude every thing calculated to offend propriety
and virrue, or to weaken or insult tho moral tone of
the thousands of families to whnso tastes, curiosity
and amusement it is our business as well as our
plessuro io administer.
Uur list is already large but our expenses aro
by no means inconsiderable, and whilo the former
shall continue to increase, through the kindness
and partiality of our friends, we shall nothcsitato m
relation to the latter. It is the object ot our arm
tion to render tho Saturday Chronicle just such a
public journal as tho mother may delight in com
mending to her daughter, t tic lather to tho son, and
the philanthropist to tho community at large.
