Agriellituralitems. WORK TOP. SE-VI:EMBER AUTUMN PLANTING of trees is best where there is likely to be a long., mild autumn, but where the winter shuts down suddenly, it is better to plant in spring. Next month the trees will be ready to remove from the nursery, and the ground should be prepared for their reception. A deep, v.-ell-drained, but not over-rich soil is best. Plow and subsoil, and if possible make the whole piece in tended for the orchard so well pre pared that a tree will grow in one place as well as in another. BUDDING many continue as long as the bark of the stock will lift or "run," which it will do with peaches and quince stocks this month. Ex amine previous buddings and loosen the bandages if need be. Where buds failed, put in others, if not too late. MAxmallo. I•Turserymen who raise the best trees pass between the nursery rows with a plow and turn a shallow furrow, in which a well-de composed compost is distributed and the earth thrown back. In this way the land is kept in excellent condi tion. GuirEs.—Tdarket, growers often gather the fruit as soon as it is coo red arid before it is fully ripe. Some vniieties, like the Diana, are eatable when only partly ripe. Full matu rity is shown by the stein assuming a ripe appearance and losing its stiff ness, allowing the bunches to hang directly clown from the vine. Use scissors in gathering, and handle the . fruit as little as possible. BEANS.-If the Limas set more than can be used in the green state before frost, shell and dry for winter. Soaked over night before cooking, they are nearly as good as when fresh. Salt string beans. =I AGRICULTURAL JOKES.—The Ohio Farmer lets of the following : Large horses are generally most admired by farmers ; but farmers are most admired who pony up. Prosperity is generally based upon knowledge and industry; the swipe will always get most that nose most. Farmers are like fowls, neither will get full crops without industry. Because a man who attends a flock of sheep is a shepherd, makes it no reason that a man who keeps cows . should be a cow-ard. We like to see a farmer increase the growth of useful plants. and shrubs around his home, but do not like to see him use jails, poles, and boards to prop-a-gate with. MANY farmers have noticed in their fields a large black beetle, with most brilliant dots placed in rows on his back. Dr. Fitch says: "Its eggs produce the corn grub killer. It . is a most inveteratefoe to the cut-worm, grasping the worm in its strong jaws, and, in spite of its violent writh ing and struggles, securely holding it. When it finds these worms in plen ty, it gorges and surfeits itself upon them till it is so glutted and extend ed as•to be scarcely able to stir, for •it never knows how to let a cut worth alone when it meets him.- It is continually hunting these worms, feeding on nothing else if it can ob tain them. -Both it and the golden dotted beetle which produces it, there fore, should never be harmed." I=l A correspondent of the Ohio Far mer states that the grape prospects all along the Lake shore region con tinue very good, though considerable damage was done to the vines around Sandusky by the recent storms. The dry, warm weather, for some time past, has been favorable to the growth of the vines and fruit. It is added that the prospects of peaches and tip ples intake and Ashtabula counties are quite fair. I= Tim American Agr:cuiturist tells a story of the means by which a far mer always succeeded in raising a larger and fatter bog than any of his neighbors wit w hom he was. com peting. It was found that he made use of jealousy as a tonic. After the big hog had eaten ail it wanted, he would let a poor little pig into the pen, when the fat one would fight it off, and continue eating, to prevent the other getting any food. I=l SIICEING HORSES The necessity of the most careful shoeing of bldoded horses has been shown in the ordeal through which Dexter has just passed, the king of the turf; whose feet during the win ter have been badly contracted, which has just been satisfactorily overcome. The proper shoeing of horses is a matter of great importance in all Cases, but in those delicate hoofed highblooded trotters, it becomes a mater of importance both for speed and comfort. Mr. Bonner is so par ticular about the manner in which his horses are shod, that he always superintends the operation himself, remaining in the shop during the fit ing and nailing of the shoes, both . of which details he not only directs but even assists in personally. As the perfect flatness of the shoe is necessary to easy and comfortable stepping, Mr. Bonner ha's procured a smooth and flat block of marble, upon whose surface he places every shoe, before it is nailed to the horses hoof. and if the iron does not lie plum on the stone, it is hammered and filed until a thoroughly level surface is obtained. He has also a theory about fastening a shoe. He -makes the smith hammer the nails alternately on each side, stroke for stroke, nail by nail, left and right, so that the tightening of the shoe to the hoof is gradual and equal on both sides. He also has the shanks of the shoe stretched but little wider than the hoof; and by this system of driving the nails, the foot is brought to the shoe, and the frog and heel are ex panded in the operation. The result is highly conducive to the soundness and toughness of the hoof and the freedom and firmness of step in the animal. RULES FOR Cow MANAGEMENT.— Cows should run dry six weeks be fore calving ; if milked closely to calv ing, the calves will be poorer. .. Heifers dried up too early after calving, .will always run dry about the same time in after years—there fore, be careful to milk closely the first year, until about six weeks be fore calving. Have you sufficient shelter for all animals intended to b,-. over? If not pro vric - ,e it is a bad policy to let them stand out in the cold.
