Suicide.—A German named e john Weiss eller, employed In the lager beer brewery of Leo. pold Kern, on Lawrence street, between Seventh and Eighth,committed suicide on Monday or Tues day by hanging himself. He bad been missed for a day or two and search was made for him and on Tuesday morning his body was found suspended by the neck from the ceiling of the room. The deceased was an unmarried man, about 95 years of age, possessed considerable money and no particu lar cause can bo assigned for committing the rash act, though recently he has been downcast and de jected in spirits. Coroner Bush was notified and hold an inquest on Tuesday afternoon, and the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts. Delano, Commis sioner of Internal Revenue, having been requested to give an opinion whether Bus cut made from tax paid plug tobacco must ho stamped and mark ed as other fine cut tobacco, has replied that it must bo packaged and stamped the same as flue cut tobacco manufactured directly from the leaf. The fact that a tax was originally paid on the cav endish or plug does not affect the liability to a tax of the fins cut tobacco manufactured from it. INDEPENDENCE DAY IN CATABAUQUA.— On Saturday, July 3d, the anniversary of our na tional birthday will bo celebrated in Catasauqua with appropriate ceremonies. A street parade of the various orders and societies of the Borough, under the Mariamlahip of M. H. Horn, will take place. The procession will march to a beautiful grove in the rear of the town when an oration will be delivered and the Declaration of Independ ence read. The celebration will close by a concert lu the evening and a display of tire works. Malian Unrvisnerrv.—The Lehigh Univer sity sent forth its first graduating class on Thurs day. The University exercises and the inaugura tion of Packer's Hall attracted a number of visit. ors to Bethlehem and there was a general flatter of excitement. The diplomas were presented to the graduates by the President and addresses were made by several distinguished visitors. The Right Rev.T. D. Thantiogdou, Bishop of Central New York preached the University sermon on Sunday. EDITORIAL EXCUIU3ION.—The annual ex- Curalon of the Now Jersey Editorial Association ' to the coal region of Pennsylvania took place last week. The party arrived In Bethlehem ou Tues day afternoon and past the remainder of the day in seeing the different objects of Interest around that Borough . . On Wednesday morning they passed up the Lehigh Valley, but did not stop sufficiently long in Allentown to snake nu extended exploration. Tho excursion numbered two hundred and fifty persons, representing ne.arly. all of the one hundred and two newspapers in the State. The party was under the guidance of Mr. Chas. Tomlinson and Mr. John F. Babcock, Presi dent and Secretary of the association. LAY REPRESENTATION.—The vote of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Churches in this and other Staten, is now being taken upon the question of lay representation. The election Is held under the direction of the preacher In charge, and two laymen appointed for the purpose by the Quarterly Conference. All members In full con nection, of 21 years of age and over, are entitled to vote. This Includes both male and female members. Within ten days after the election, the result of It must be reported by the pastor nud his lay associates to the presiding elder of the district, and he must report the result In each church of his district to the presiding bishop nt the ensuing session of the annual conference. So far as the vote has been taken It is In favor of lay represen tation by a large majority. The vote of the mem bers has no direst reference to any plan ; the adoption of the principle only goes to them for de cision, the plan will be fixed by ,the general con ference at its next session. The subject is attract ing much attention In the churches, and the mem bers are urged to turn out In their strength and cast their votes for or against the measure. TIOX6II, sou of J. S. Troxell, of Whitehall Station, formerly of Mt. Bethel, Northampton county, has returned to Lis home after an absence of over four years. During his absence lie has visited different parts of South America, the Sandwich Islands and Cuba. In the latter Ito had been prominently engaged during the last nineteen months In the struggle for freedom. He relates many thrilling Incidents concerning Cuba and the revolution. NEW PROCESS IN PRINTINO BANK NOTES. —George T. Jones, an engraver of Cincinnati, has perfected and patented n system of printing bank notes, which, it is said, defies counterfeiting. Ile prints on unsized paper, which is well known to tnko the clearest and. sharpest impressions, and then proceeds to apply mechanically a sizing per fected by him, which having been set by sub jection to a heat of 200 degrees, is henceforth Inso luble rind Irremovable without destroying the im pression beneath It, and thus leaving the paper nearly white and wholly illegible. The colors, being wisely chosen, cannot be photographed, but are japanned, as It were, and laugh at the most Ingenious and S , klilful efforts to transfer, which can remove only by effacing or destroying them. Anderson, a brakesman on a local freight train on the East I'enn. Railroad, bad the forefinger on one of his bands mashed while cou pling cars at Lyons Station,on Wednesday. Cornelius Acker, of Rittersville, while returning front Allentown to his home, on Saturday after noon, lost a roll of money amounting to MO. A reward of fifty dollars is offered for its recovery. The, debt of the school district of Catasauqua is $10,500, and the estimated value of school build ings, grounds, furniture, &c., Is 848,000. The flouring mill at Bethlehem, which was de stroyed by fire last spring, has been rebuilt and Is now in operation. The amount of State and , County tax levied in Lehigh county for the year 1800 is 8120,103.98. We hope the Theo logical doctors will be able to relieve the patients. —An old but. good looking bachelor of Easton had a pair of gold spectacles voted him at a late fair, and a committee of manageable ladles waited on him to see hint try them on, and see whether he could see new charms, before un discovered, In any of them, that would lead hint to repentance and a new (married) life. We see that Muhleuberg College in Allentown has had commencement exercises. Then nearer home, Lehigh University in Bethle hem diplomatized some students on Thursday. LaFayette comes later, in July, preparations are being made to render he next commencement great success. One cannot avoid the thought that the Lehigh Valley is to be foremost In the ranks of Scientific Educational enterprise, when we see that at Easton, Bethlehem and Allentown we have first class colleges. —What is a box ? We are sorry to tiny that the rresbyterian church In this plaice, vacant since the, Rev. B. Everitt's resignation, Is yet without as pastor. They haven kettle of lialt in the congregation anal its a very pretty one. We hope they will fry the fish and bury the hatchet at the feast. The Methodist church, under Rev. Mr. Ridge way, is getting proud, and are adding improve ments to,their building In the shape of a new front with a tower and at spire, which will make it the second handsomest church In town. The new Lutheran church is nearly finished and and looks very well, 'only a little out of proportion, it Is not deep enough for the frontage, therefore , does not correspond. It has n spire at one corner, surmounted by a cross, and a tower at the other, very much cut off and having a " chuncity" ap pearance. Its frontage we should guess was about 04 feet and its depths not over 70 feet, which from the side gives It an undue proportion. The Society of Friends have Just erected and finished a new Meeting House, which shows that the Stroudsburg Friends belong to the " Progres sive Sect." The building Is of brick, two stories high, and the tipper room Is painted a plain yellow and nicely varnishetand has a gallery, the lower portion is .divided Lao a week-day school and a room for generhl meeting of the Society. They expect to hold services there to-morrow. A number of line Improvements are going on.
