FARMER AND HOUSEKEEPER
To PREVENT Cl:Palk G.—During the "hot
term" persons of a full habit, who walk much,
are inclined to chafe. This can be cured or
prevented by the use, once or twice a day—at
retiring and rising—of a solution of common
alum in water. The alum may be dissolved
in warm or cold water, but should be used
cold, applied with a soft linen or cotton cloth
to the parts afTeepd. The proportions are a
lump of alum largo as a walnut to half a pint
of water. If too strong, where the flesh is ex
coriated, weaken with cold water. •
AN ITEM FOR THE LADIES.-J. L. Booth, of
Rochester, N. Y., the inventor of the now steel
capped rail fur railroads, says: "Fold a wet
towel or cloth a few times, placing the same
on a table or in a pan, set the glass jar (cold)
upon it, and 'pour in the hot, fruit or liquid
withcut fear, and if a jar can be broken in
this way he would like to know it. If, per
chance, one should break, it would bo easier
to give a philosophical reason for it 'than for
it ntit breaking.
.As it is an intolerable pest
to heat the jars prior to filling, the announce
ment will be thankfully received by all who
are not awure of the fact_' Mr. Booth offers
to give $5O to the first person who will send
him- a satisfactory explanation, showing why
the jar does not break under the. above men
tioned circumstances.
PRESERVING SEED Coux.—As the sewn is
at hand far farmers to lay away their seed
corn, wo give the following suggestions from
an old farmer in Wisconsin. As soon as the
largest ears become hardened or glazed, thoUgh
the stalk may be quite green and the husk on
the ear somewhat green, select the largest
and ripest ears, and on the same day divest
the corn of all the husk, save as much as will
suspend it. Braid the ears in bunches of ten
or twelve and suspend them in some dry place,
or if the atmosphere be damp, hang the
bunches around the wall of the• kitchen for
three or four weeks at least. It may hang
either in the kitchen or any . dry, airy place,
where neither damp nor rain will get to it.
until planting time. All such seeds will
grow in any land not flooded with water.—
Prairie Farmer.
SILECTIN6 A Cow.—The Massachusetts
PlouOntan gives the following directions:
"It is eometimes the case that the best judges
will bo deceived. A cow of very unpromising
appearance, coarse in the neck, Inrgo•boned,
and second or third-rate milk marks generally,
will now and then turn cut to be first rain,
while another, with these marks largely devel
oped, flue in the head and neck, and promis-.
ing everyway, will prove unsatisfactory. But
a failure in this case is rare. Let the head be
light, the forehead broad, the horn rather thin
and clear, the eye clear and prominent, the
neck thin, and the foicquartere rather light,
the hack straight, the hindquarters well-devel.
()red, wide over the loins, the carcass dcep,
the udder coming forward and well-shaped.
the akin soft to the touch, the Mats well set,
nut too large nor too small, the tail long and
thin, like a a hip lash, Such a cow ought to
be a good one.'
To INSURE EGOS rote WINTER.—If an old
hen has boon laying well all summer, and is
hits in moulting, she requires rest and time to
recover from the moult; and if cold weather
comes on her when but partly moulted, she
will, perhaps, be a long time recovering the
proper condition for laying. If, however, she•
is allowed to set late in summer so as to rest
her (ruin egg laying, and during the time she
is - tending her brood she is encouraged to
moult, by warmth and generous feeding, she
will, when her moult is, completed, soon get
into a laying condition, and by good manage
meat, may el ten be kept laying all the winter,
and lay butter and larger eggs than pullets.—
I give barley and oats mixed eaoh'day and
have the run of a small field. To prevent
their wanting to set, I regularly take up all
the eggs so laid and never lesita but two in
best.—•Cer. /Tondos Artskri

After more than twelve years of constant use, this
highly coicentrated manure has attained a wide
spread reputation as a
Substitute for Peruvian Guano.
Being found active in ins operation, and of great du

WASHING COMPOUND!
.I`ll.li undersigned wishes to announce to the public
that ho has taken the Agency of this valuable
compound, and now offers FAMILY RIGIITS for
sale. This Compound has, in many places almost
universally come into use, resulting in a
Great Saving of Labor and Time,
and proving far less destruotive to wearing apparel
than the old mode of washing. By this method the
Finest Linens, Laces, Cambrics etc.,
can be readily and easily cleaned with very little
trouble. No need of rubbing the skin off your hands
and tearing the clothes to pieces. It will wash in
hard and soft water. Clothes need boiling but a
few minutes, and but very little if any rubbing with
the hands: thus avoid their wear on the wash-board.
It removes Paint, Grease, or stains of all kinds. It
does not injure the color.
It is not only better than ordinary soap, but much
cheaper. Give it a trial and you will use nothing
else. •
It positively will not injure the clothes, as many
have given it a fair trial for several years, and it
speaks for itself. The componnd cannot be sharp
when every pound of ingredients requires po gallons
of water.
AD- Persons who have used it desiring to not as
sub-agents among their neighbors and friends, by
making application.te me will ho authorized to do
so, and receive a commission of 10 per cent.
