    The Arctic Expedition.
The little brigantine AdVance, bound for
the Arctic regions, set sail yesterday mor
ning from New York, -having been towed to
sea by the brig Titan as fiirlts h - e - lighrship
off Sandy Hook, where a favorable breeze
wafted her on towards her destination. A
steamer had previously taken a party of
about one hundred gentlemen to the brig
at her anchorage off the battery, where a
touching parting took place with the adven
turous officers and crew. Among the com
pany were Judgo Kane, of Philadelphia.
father of Dr. Kane, and his three younger
sons ; Col. Wm. J. Leiper, Dr. K.'s uncle;
Henry Grinnell, the proprietor of the expe
dition, and his son Cornelius Grinnell ; Capt.
Levy, of the Navy, and others.
The entire number of men in the Ad
vance,ls_ only seventeen, and all of them
are quite young. The following is a full
list of their names : '
Ensile IC. Kane, M. D., U. S. N., Com
manding the Expedition.
J. • Wall' 'Wilson,. First . Mate ; Henry
Brooks, Second Mate ; Amos Broniell,Third
Mate : James McGeary, Fourth - Mate ;
Christopher Ohlsen, Carpenter.
Seamen—George Stephenson, Jefferson
T. Parker. Geo. J. Whitten, William E.
Godfrey, George Reilley, C. Blake.
Wm. Morton, Steward ; Peter Sheppard,
Cook ; J. J. Hayes, Surgeon : Augustus
Sontag, Astronomer ; Elenry Goodfellow,
Naturalist.
The scientific outfit of the expedition is
as follows :
A complete Daguerreotype Apparatus.
Two Astronomical Instruments—a Tran
sit Instrument and a Gamboy Theodolite.
Magnetic Instruments— Magnetometer,
Inclinatorium and Azimuth Compass.
Meteorological Instruments-5 Barcime
tees, 2 Ameroid Barometers. 6 dozen
Thermometers, and 3 Maximum and Mini
mum Thermometers.
A bottle of Saline Waters, used as a con
denser in Meteoric line apparatus, tkbe em
ployed for testing point of refrigerati.,"
The brig is provisioned for three yeall,
:and is provided with quantities of snow
shoes, wooden sabots, sledges, india-rubber
boats, buffalo skins, &c., and an additional
supply of furs wit' be obtained in Green-
Jand.. There is also a good library on board,
and nothing seems to have been neglected
tir the outfit-of the brig or the comfort of
,the men: . We haVe a strong confidence
that Dr. Kirke: even if he should not dis
cover traces . of Sir .I . ohn . Franklin. will solve
the problem of the open polar sea, and make
many interesting discoveries in reference to
the Arctic region. He is peculiarly fitted
for the task he has undertaken, and we wish
him and his gallant associates God speed in
their noble undertaking.—(Even. Bulletin.
Fertility 'el' the Prairie Land.
When the country was first settled it was
often predicted that the richness of the soil
would not continue after it had been used a
few years.—And, even after tin; country had
been settled several years, neWoomers would
in no wise believe that the land could con
tinue its unequalled productiveness. . But
time and years since proved to the old sett
lers the laud holds its own and produces
crops equal if not, superior to these first grown.
There may be sortie doubt ns to the adaption
of this soil and climate to wheat growing, but
as to the richness and ability of the soil to
produce anything else grown in this lati
tude there is no reason to doubt.
,
We turned a furrow a few days since in
.a field that has yielded a crop of corn, or
wheat or oats every year since 1638, or in
other words. seventeen years without any
manure. We have known this field, togeth
er with many other similar for the last ten
years and it has . product4 invariably good
crops—the last'crop'which was. oats was as
large as could grow and not fall down be
fore harvest.
These facts, which are easily proved, and
numerous similar ones, of which there cod Id
be no doubt, do not, look like , failure in the
fertility of the Prairie land: Very many
who. have lived among the hills of New Eng
land, 'Nov York, or Pennsylvania, are slow
to believe that any large number of succes
sive crops can be raised upon any soil with
out: manure, but they have only to come
here and give this soil a fair trial and they
can then be satisfied.—Freeporl 111., Prai

-Steam on the Canal.
The 'Reading Gazette ventures the opin
