Change in the Shipment of Produce.
The St.touis•papers state that it is.diffi
cult to 6btain a New Orleans cargo there.—
Prices are down to the very lowest figure.
The - river is in fine condition, but boats are
frequently compelled-.to go out:less than
half freighted. The leudinsoutples of the
country, such as tobacco, hemp, lead, corn,
whiskey, provisions, and many other arti
cles of grain and produce, are being ship
ped to the Ohio river, or eastward by Way
of Chicago and the railroad routes, and thus
it is that the business of St. Louis is taking
new and almost upthotight-of channels.—
Tobacco, hemp, lead and provisions by the
hundred and thousands of tons, and grain
by the boat load has been sent to the La[tes
and to the-Ohio river which, by the previ
ous course of trade usually went down the
:Mississippi toNew'Orleans. This - speales
well for railroads and other inland commu
.,nication, but-it-atigers-no.good-to-the - com- -
mercial and business prospects of the South
ern metropolis. The ascendency of New
• Orleans over the trade of the West, in the
shipping and forwarding business; is being
diverted to other channels.
di Joyful Meeting.—We clip the follow
ing incident connected with the late railroad
collision, from the Aurora Guardian :
--- A resident of our - placei-Mrw---Searfford,
was expecting a son home from Michigan.
On receipt of the news of the collision, he
posted off immediately to Chicago. Arriv
ing there he found that the dead had all been
buried. One unknown young man was de
scribed. The dress, color of his hair, age,
and size tallied with remarkable precision.
A pocket book taken from the pocket of the
unknown body was produced,.it was the
boy's. The father returned home to tell the
story-to other aching hearts, but failed to see
the body. Next day he returned again to
Chicago, and while in search of the coroner
met his own son in the street alive and well.
On comparing pocket books, such was the
similarity that it was hard to distinguish one
from the other !--The joy of that - meeting - May
be better-imagined than described. - Young
Scarfford had been to Michigan for trees, and
would have returned in the unfortunate train
but was to late to get on board.
General Washington's Motion.—ln 1917,
in - a debate jathe house of delegates, on the

one of the members of the Convention that
formed the Constitution of the United States.
The sudject of power to be given the new
congress, relative to a standing army, was

that Congress should be restricted ton stan
ding army not exceeding five thousand at
any one. time. . ... Cion,_ Washington, who,

whispered to a member from Maryland, to
amend the motion by providing that no foreign
enemy should invade theUnitedStates at one
tune, with more than three thousand troops.

between Wilkesbarre and the Lehigh, and we
are informed the highest grade necessary will
not exceedSixty, two and a,,,halffeet to the mile.
This is very favorable, and it is thought possible
to reduce it slightly.
