    The Precious Metals In England.
The London papers received yesterday, by,
the Pacific steamer, announces the arrival
of the long expected steam propeller Great
Britain, from Australia, at Liverpool. As
she sailed from Melborne on January 4, her
market and emigration news is no later in
deed not quite as late, as heretofore received.
Her passage was 89 days. She carried
to England on freight, 103,000 ounces
Australia Gold, and XBO,OOO in the hands
of passengers, making together, about three
millions dollars. Among the passengers who
returned home by this opportunity, were
several successful ad venturers. One brought
$75.000 made in a public house at Mel
bourne; i wo others $150,000, made by
Steeping a Circus; a carter made $lO,OOO.
and one man. on board had a nugget of pure
gold, which he picked up himself weighing
eight pounds averdupois, worth $2,590.
Besides the , large sum brought by the
steamerrseveral vessels arrived at. London
the week preceding the sailing of the steamer
from Australia, with $1,028,000 in Gold,
and the West India packetcarried in $915,-
000 in Silver. The exports of the week
were about $1,200,000, in the aggregate.
Silver continues to go to China and British
India, but attention is called by the papers
to the very decided falling off in the Gold
Continent.
The excitement in the Australian trade
and emigration in Great Britain, continues,
and is likely to receive an additional impetus
from the golden accounts and practical re
sults brought by the Great Britain, and other
vessels now arriving from Melbourne and
Sydney.
Loss of the Steamship Independence.
The steamship United States arrived this
morning April 23, at New Orleans, with
dates from Aspinwall to the 18th, and from
Cailifornin to the Ist, being two weeks later
than the previous advice.
The United States has over one hundred
passengers, though but very little gold on
freight.
The Untied States brings the sad intel
ligence of the wreck of the steamship In
depender. on her way to San Francisco.
By thi4 sad disaster about one hundred
and thirty lives were lost, comprising a
large portion of the passengers and crew.
Among them wa_s_sll,._,A . _SchoTeld.—of
Pennsylvania, together with a large number
of New . Yorkers
The remainder. of the passengers and
crew were rescued and carried into San
Francisco
The news from California, though very
interesting, possesses no striking feature of
importance.
Business nt the mines was improving, and
the mines were in good health and spirits.
AL San Francisco there was not much in
the marhets, and business was dull. Flour
was . sellina at SU 50 per barrel.
There lidd been some heavy freshets in
the interior, and the town of Marysville was
inundated. An immense amount of property
was destroyed.
Tite proceedings of the Legislature do not
a s iossers an v general interest.
Lieut. Russell has been killed by the In
dians. Several outrages have taken place
of late by marauding bands of Indians.
There is no intelligence of the capture of
the famous robber Joaquin.
