Improved Chain Pumps,
ALLENTOWN LEIIIOII COUNTY.
The undersigned takes this method to in
form the public generally, that he continues
to manufacture the new and Improved
Chain Pumps iith Iron Curb,
for which he has just got out a new patern
and is now prepared to fill orders for same.
A. constantly increasing demand for these
Pumps, resulting in part from the gteat
improvements we have lately effected in
their construction, affords, substantial evi
dence of their superior adaptation to the pub
lic wants. We, therefore, nave no hesita
tion in saying that they give better satis
faction to purchasers, are more economical,
and do their work more rapidly and with
less expenditure of labor than any other
Pumps in use. Their operation gives mo
tion to the water, and thus effectually pre
vents it from becoming stagnant and impure.
They are made so as to be readily put in
operation, even by experienced hands
can be put together at the Factory or be
sent away in parts, as customers prefer ;
and they can be easily and cheaply trans
ported to any part of the country.
He trusts the low prices for which he
offers his Pumps, will be an inducement to
those who want the article to give him a call..

and intestines. Without it - there will be no
digestion -- no conversion of food into blood,
and no nutrition of the body ; but rather a
foul, torpid, painful, and destructive condi•
tion of the w hoe digestive apparatus. A
weak, haf dead, or injured stomach produ
ces. no good Gastric Juice, and hence the
disease, distress and debility whirl ensue.
Pepsin and Rennet.-Pelisin is the chief
element, 'or great digesting principle of the
Gastric Juice. It is found in great abun
dance
in the soid parts of theliuman sto
mach after death, and sometimes causes the
stomach to digest itself. or eat itself up. It
is also found in the stomach of animals, as
the ox, calf, &c. It is the material used by
'farmers in snaking cheese, called Rennet,
the effect of which has long been the spe
'cial wonder Of the dairy. The curdling of
milt is the first process of digestion. Ren
net possesses astonishing power. The sto
mach of a calf will curdle nearly one thou
sand times its own weight of Milk. Baron
Liebig states that, "One part of Pepsin
dissolved in sixty thousanl parts of water,
will digest meat and other food." Diseased
stomachs produce no good Gastric Juice,
Rennet or Pepsin. To that this want
may be perfectly supplied, we-vote the

Scientific Ecidenec!—Boron Liebig, in
Isis celebrated work on Animal Chemistry,
says: "An Artificial Digestive Fluid may
be readily prepared front the mucous tnem
braise of the stomach of the Calf,. in which
various articles of food, as meat and e-rgs,
will be softened, changed, and digested, just
in the same manner as they would be in the
human stomach."
Dr. Pereira. in his famous treatise on
"Food and Diet," published by Wilson Sr;
Co., New York, page 35, states the saute
great fact, and describes the method of pre
paration. There are ft w higher authori=
ties than Dr. Pereira
Dr. John W. Draper, Profes.9_or of Che
mistry in the Medical ('ollege of the Uni
versity of New York, in his "Text Book of
Chemistry," page :),Sfi, says, "it has been
a question whether ortilicial digestion could
be performed—but it. is now universally ad
mitted that it may be."
Professor Dung.lison of Philadelphia, in
his great work .tn Human Physiology, de
votes more than fifty pages to an examina
tion of this subject. I lis experiments with
Dr.•Beautnont, on the Gastric Juice, ob
tained from the living human stomach and
from animals are well known. "In all ca
ses," "he says" "digestion occurred as per
fectly in the artificial as its the natural di
gestions."
.1s a Dysinp.s fa Curer.-1)r. I loughton's
preparation of Pepsin has produced the
most marvellous effects, curing cases of De
bility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and
Dyspeptic Consumption, supposed to be on
the very verge of the grave. It is impossi
ble to give the details of cases in the limits
of this advertisement—but authenticated
certificates have been given of more than
200 Remarkable Cures, in Philadelphia,.
New York, and Boston alone. These were.
nearly all desperate cases, and the cures
were not only rapid and. wonderful, but per-
