Ulla. of John Adams to his Wife'.
1 hi the 51.11 day of July, MG. John Ad
lin.: %mac to his wife as fu;lows:—
Yesterday the greatest question was de-•
riled that was ever debated in America,
and grenter perhaps never was or will be
decided among men. A resolution was
bout one dissenting Colony, that'
Ihnited States are, and of right ought
to he, free and independent States. The
day is passed— the. fourth of July, 1776,
will Lc a memorable epoch in the history of
America- lam apt to believe, it will •be
celebrated by s cceed Mg generations as the
*rent anniversary festival. It ought to be
commemorated as the day of deliverance,
salmon acts of devotion to Almighty God.
It titi.glit to be suleintlizod with pomp, shovV,
games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and il
luminations, from one mid of the continent
to the other, from this time forward forever.
You will think me transported with enthu
siasm, but lam not. lam well aware of
the toil and blood and treasure which' it
will cost to maintain this declaration; and
support and defend these States ; yet
through all the gloom, 1 can see the rays of
light and glory ; I can see the end is well
worth tuOre than all the means and that
posterity will triumph, although yott and I
rue, which I hope we shall not.
