The following curious cases showing the mistakes Which may sometimes occur hole' identity of an indiVidual, are copied from an English paper: "A young gentleman articled to an attor ney in London, was tried on five indictments for different acts of theft. A person resemb. ling the prisoner in size-and general ap pearance had calle'd at various shops .in the metropolis, for the purpose of , looking at, j,welry, hooks, and other articles, with the pre tended intention of making purchases, but made off with the property phiced be fore him, while the shopkeepers were en-. gaged in looking out other articks. In each of these cases the prisoner Was positively identified by several persons, while in a ma jority of them an alibi was clearly and posi tively established, and the young, man was proved to be of orderly habits and irreproach able character, and uider no temptation from want of money, to resort to acts of dis honesty.. Similar depredations on other tradesmen had been committed by a person resembling the prisoner, and those persons proved that, though there was a considera,, He resemblance to the prisoner, he was not the person who had robbed them. The prisoner was convicted on one indictment, but acqUitted on all the otheri; and the judge and jurors who tried the three lust cases, expressed their conviction that the prisoner had been mistaken, and that the prosecutors had been robbed by another person resemb ling the prisoner. A pardon was immedi ately procured in respect of that charge on which the conviction had taken place. Not many month before the last mention ed case, a respectable young man was tried fur a highway robbery, committed in the nein libialmod of Bethnal Green. in which neighborhood both he and the prosecutor resided. The prosecutor sword positively that the priSoner was the man who robbed him of hiS watch. The counsel for the pri :null. called a genteel young woman, to whom the prisoner paid his addresses who gave' t vidence ‘yhi h proved a com ; lt.te The prosecutor was then ordered out of Court, and in the interval another young man, of the name of Greenwood, who await ed his trial on a capital charge of felony. was introduced, nod placed by the side of the prisoner. Thu prosecutor was again placed in the witness box, and addressed thus:—Remember, sir, the life adds young mart depends upon your reply to the ques tion lam about to put. Will you swear again that the young man nt the bar is the person who asz, aulted you ? The witness turned his. bend towards the dt.ck, when beholding two men so nearly alike, he be came petrified with astonishment, dropped his hat, and tuns speechless for a time, but at length declined swearing to either. The young man was of course acquitted. Green wood was tried for another offence. and ex ecuted ; and a few hours before his death acknowledged that he had committed the robbery with which the other was charged. The Mother's First Doty. . 1:-2m-t2 ¶-2w I would wish every mother to pay atten tion to the diffe•re•nce between a coarse of action, adopted in compliance.with the au thority. and between a conduct pursued for the sake of another. The first proceeds from reasoning; the second flows from affection. The first may be abandoned, when the immediate cause may have ceased to exist ; the latter will be permanent, as it did not depend upon cir cumstances, or accidental considerations, but is founded in a moral and constant princi ple. In the case now before as, if the infant does not disappoint the hope , of the mother, it will be a proof, first of affection, secondly, of confidence. Of affection—for the ea rlieit, and the most innocent wish to please, is that of the infant to please the mother. If it be questioned, whether that wish•van at all exist in one so little advanced in development, I would again as I do upon almost all occasions, appeal to the experience of Mothers. It is n proof, also, of confidence. When ever an infant has been neglected ; when the necessary attention hae not been paid to its wants; and when, instead of the smile of kindness, it has been treated with the frown of severity ; it will be difficulty to restore it to that quiet and amiable disposition, in which it will wait for the gratification of its desires without impatience, and enjoy.,it without greediness. If affection and confidence have once gain ed ground in the heart, it will be the first duty of the mother to do every thing in her power to encourage, to strengthen, and to elevate this principle.—Peetakixi.
