TO TEIE 11)1UISLIC:
THOSE who are .sulkring from remit
ting •or Intermitting Bilious Complaints,
should read the following, and be guided
thereby :
Cause of Pain.—Pain is the consequence
of the exertion of the organ or part where it
is present to throw off morbid or corrupt hu
mors, for no pain can exist but from the pre
sence of those matters which are of nn un
healthy character. When we hav e p a i n
in the head, in the bowels, or in any other
part of the body, it only proves the presence
of matters which the bloOd is trying to re
move, and it is this struggle which is the oc 7
cam!' of pain. To be bled, only removes
the anguish in proportion us the amount of
life is reduced, and the same may be said of
all lulling or soothing remedies. Not so
with Brandreth's Pills ; they at once go to
the assistance of the blood in aiding•it to
discharge bad humors, to conquer the Death
Principle. To relieve pain in this way
does not leave any bad etrects, The Life
Principle is not-reduced, nor are the teeth
destroyed ; but all the organs are cleansed
and• their health insured.

_A GREAT DISPEPSIA CURER
IPrepared from Rennet, or the fourth Stomach
of the Ox, after directions of Baron Lie
big, the great Physiological Chemist, by
J. S. Houghton. M. D., No. 11, North
Eighth Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
This is a truly wonderful remedy for In
! digestion,-Dyspepsia, Jaundice, Liver
Complaint, Constipation, and Debility,
curing after Nature's own method, by
Nature's own agent, the Gastric Juice.
I::_ir'Half a teaspoonful of this Fluid, infused
in water,. will, digest or dissolve, Five
Pounds of Roast Beef in about two hours,
out of the stomach.
Digestion. Digestion is chiefly per
formed in the stomach by the aid of a' fluid
which freely exudes from the inner coat of
, that organ, wizen in a state of health, called
I the Gastric Juice. This fluid is the Great
Solvent of the Food, the Purifying, Preserv
ing and Stimulating Agent of the stomach
and intestines. Without it there will he no
digestion—no conversion of food into blood,
and no nutrition of the body ; hut rather a
foul, torpid, painful, and destructive condi
tion of the whole digestive apparatus. A
weak, half dead, or injured stomach produ
ces no good Gastric Juice, and hence the
disease, distress and debility which ensue.
Pepsin and Rennet.—Pepsin is the chief
element; or great digesting principle of the '
Gastric Juice. It is found in great abun
dance in the solid parts of the human sto
mach after death, and sometimes causes the
stomach to digest itself, or cat itself up. It
! is also found in the •stomech of animals, as
Lthe-ox, calf, &c: It-is the material - used - by
farmers in making cheese, called Rennet,
the effect of which has long been the spe
cial wonder of the dairy. The curdling of
j milk is the first process el digestion. Ben
i net possesses astonishing' power. The sto
' mach of a calf will curdle nearly one thou
sand times its awn weight of milk. Baron
Liebig states that, "Ono part of Pepsin
dissolved in si::ty thousz.nd parts of water,
Iwill digest meat and other food." Diseased
stomachs produce no good Gastric Juice,
Rennet or Pepsin. To show that this want
may be perfectly supplied, we quote the
following
Scienlyie Evidence!—Baron Liebig, in
Ihis celebrated work on Animal Chemistry,
says: "An Artificial Digestive Fluid may
be readily prepared from the mucous mem
brane of the stomach of the Calf, in which
various articles of food, as meat and eggs,
will be softened, changed, and digested, just
in the same manner as they would.be in the
human stomach."
Dr. Pereira, in his famous treatise on
"Food and Diet," published by Wilson &
Co., New York, page 45, states the same
great fact, and describes the method of
partition. There aru few higher authori
ties than Dr. Pereira
Dr. John W. Draper, Professor of Che
mistry in the Medical College of the Uni
versity of New York, in his "Text Book of
Chemistry," page ;;SU, says, "it has been
a question whether artificial digestion could
he performeJ—but it is now universally ad
mitted that it may be."
Professor Dungliswi of Philadelphia, in
his great work on Hereon Physiology, de
votes more than fifty pages to an examirfa
don of this subject. His experiments with
Dr. Beaumont, on the Gastric Juice, ob
tained from the living human stomach and
from animals are well known. "In all ca
ses," "he says" "digestion occurred as per
j in the artificial as in the natural di
gestions."
./Is a Dyspepsia Curer.—Dr. Iloughton's
preparation of Pepsin has produced the
most marvellous effects, curing cases of De
bility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and
Dyspeptic . Consumption, supposed to be on
the very verge of the grave. It is impossi
ble to give the details of cases in the limits
of this advertisement—but authenticated
certificates have been given of more than
200 Remarkable Cures, in Philadelphia,
New York, and Boston alone.. These were
nearly all desperate cases, and .the cures
were not only rapid and wonderful, but per
manent.
It is a great Nervous Antidote, and from
the astonishingly .
. small quantity necessary
td•produce healthy digestion, is believed to.
act upon
Elcetro-MitArnelic Principles !—There is
no form of Old Stomach Complaints which
irdoes not seem to reach and remove at once.
No matter how bad they may be, it gives
• instant relief ! A single dose removes a!l the
unpleasant symptoms, and it only ne6ds to
be repeated, for a short time, to make these.
, good effects permanent, purity of blood and
vigor of body, follow at once. Ft is particu
larly excellent in cases of Nausea, Vomiting,
Cramps, Soreness of the pit of the Stomach,
distress after eating, low, cold, state of the
