HARD UP FOR ÜBOW Roow—A. correspondent
of one of our papers, writing from Germany, thus
hits off the diminutive size of some of the petty
Germanic kingdo ns and principalities, few of
which are bigger than 'Rhode Island: "I have just
returned from Germany, after a month's knocking
about. L had glorious weather, and saw all the
little kings at Frankfort. There is a good an
ecdote of one of them. Se wanted hie army in
structed in the use of the Armstrong guns, but
was obliged to ask leave of the next king to have
the target put up in his kingdom, his own not
being big enough for the Armstrong range."
PansEztrarcosr.—The personal friends of W. W.
Irwin, Commissary General of Pennsylvania, pre
sented him 'with an elegant testimonial of their
regard on Friday evening last. The gift consisted
of the splendid fruit ,painting, elegantly framed,
which bas been displayed in the window of Ward's
music store for ome stime past. The presentation
took place in the State Library rooms, Gen. R
Riddle Roberts acting as spokesman. (ien. Irwin
replied in an appropriate manner, after which
speeehes were made by Samuel B. Thomas, A. C.
Mullin, and Col. T. C. lifacDoirell. All parties
then adjourned to Breitinger's restaurant and re
galed the inner man.
Cumon GROCERIZII.—No better selected or more
reasonably priced assortment of choice family gro
ceries can be found in town than in the establish
ment of our friend, Adam Keller, jr., corner of
Front and Market streets. His groceries are war
ranted fresh and genuine, and are of the best
quality- All the varieties and brands of sugar,
syrup, coffee, cheese, sauces, spice, hams, dried
meats, etc., are kept on hand in profusion, and will
be disposed of at prices advantageous to the pur
chaser. In addition to his regular grocery stock,
Mr. Keller displays an excellent assortment of
queensware, glassware, willow ware, lamps,
dca—
We recommand those purchasing groceries to give
him a call. They can deal as satisfactorily with
him as "any other man."
ANTHRACITE COAL TRADE.—This great trade is
still active from all sources of prolluetion. The
demand for domestic purposes is brisk, and prices
are steady for cargoes, as well as for coal at the
yards. An abstract from the reports of the vari
ous mining companies, for the week ending Satur
day, shows that the tonnage for the week was
230528 tons, which was about the same as the
week previous. The aggregate for the current
year is 7,742,063 tans, being an increase over the
tonnage to corresponding time last year of 1,478,-
190 tons. Coal being worth at least two dollars
per ton more at the mines than last year, the in
crease on the entire production is equal to nearly
$15,500,000! If to this is added the last year's
coat of coal, transportation, etc., we shall find the
net proceeds of our mines settling at seine point
between $40,000,000 and U 0,000,000.
Goop LucK,--SIMIO telleWS talk about "luck."
They lay idle day after day, waiting like klicaw
bet far "something to turn up," but never attempt
ing to turn it up themselves just as if the world
was gotten up on the lottery principle, and success
depended on a fortunate hit in a confused whirli
gig of chances. Good look is to get up at si=
teclock in the morning ; good luck, if you have
only a shilling a week, is to live on eleven pence
arta save a penny; good luck is to trouble your
bead with your own business, and let your neigh
bor's alone; good luck is to fulfil the command
ments and do unto others as we wish them to do
unto us. We must not only work, but wait. We
must plod and persevere. It's a tough old world,
and to get on in it we must have "cheek," must
take cave of home, sweep our own doorways
clean, try and help other people, avoid tempta
tion, and have faith in truth and God. Having
these qualities, - a man is bound to be "lucky."
noRSIS A...st , THIEF InErnarren.—M r . Stansbury,
the stealing of whose horse from his farm in Bal
timore county, Md., we noticed in Friday's paper ?
together with the arrest of the supposed thief
and recovery of the horse by officer Campbell, ar.
rived in this city on Saturday. He identified the
horse, which bad been taken to Toner's stable, and
on being confronted wi.h the prisoner, James
Jones, he recognized him as havingteat near him
in church, in Baltimore county, on the night the
horse was taken. Jones did not deny the state
ment, and this, together with the confused and
contradictory nature of the young man's own
story, induced the Alderman to remand him to
prison. The horse was accordingly given up to the
owner, and the defendant is in prison awaiting a
requisition from the Governor of Maryland.
The reward effered by Stansbury, we understand
was MS—that is, $25 fo; the recovery of the horse,
and $5O for the apprehension of the thief. This
was ;tat,. sae to t.fficet Campbell; but, by some
manipulations which certain professional gentle.
men understand better than he does, he did not
receive a cent of it. The horse was taken away,
and the man who recovered him goes unrewarded.
Officer Campbell informs us that the reward was
withheld by advice or the District Attorney, who
told him that a police officer was not entitled to a
Claim for reward in eases of thla nature. If this
be so, the inducement for such to arrest thieves
and malefactors is certainly tut very great, and
the discrimination in favor °reline not legally
qualified to make arrests is unjust and nonsensical.
Snit on (arc) Moos?—During the delivery of a
reeent temperance lecture, Mr. Gough tells one of
the funniest and most characteristic stories we re
member ever to have seen. It is more thoroughly
maudlin and mellow than anything in the "Too
dles," and might be produced with effect by our
amateur friend N., at the next performance of the
"Thespian
Two men, after drinking and carousing all night
at a saloon, started in the morning to go home.
It was a beautiful, sunny morning, and as they
staggered along, the following conversation arose:
llhebriate No. I—" How bright (hic) the moon
shines !"
No. 2—" You don't call that (hio) moon, do ye ?
That's (hie) sun !"
No. I—" Taint—it's (hic) moon."
No. 2—" l tell ye it's sun !"
No. 1—" Well less leave (hie) matters to firs man
we meet."
No. 2—" Agreed."
The two toddled along for a abort distance, when
they chanced to meet a man in exactly the same
condition with themselves. The individual was
immediately treated to the following interroga
tion :
No. 1—" I shay (hie) old fellow! We've got
inter little 'spate; want ye to (hie) 'elp ns out.
My fren here says that's the sun, [pointing up
wards to Old Sol who was blazing fiercely down
upon them.] and I say it's moon. Now we're goin'
to leave the matter to you. What is it—sun or
(hic) moon ?"
The person addressed braced himself, after con
siderable difficulty, against a lamp post, and then
commenced to seratinize, as well as he could, the
burning orb overhead—repeating in a meditative
tone of voice: "Sun—moon—sun—(hio)—moon."
After a abort "observation," he exclaimed: "Fact
is, gent'lem, I'm a stranger in this part (hie) of
the country, and I can't tell whether its sun or
(hie) moon."
Thus the matter was undecided, and inebriates
Noe. 1 and 2 reeled away, baffled and disheartened
by the unsatisfactory result of their search into
aetronontioat mysteries.
ELECTION FRATIDS.—We begin to discover the
!met of some of the unpreeedented Aboli
tion majorities at the late election. The case of
the First Ward in the city of Pittsburg, where
the vote for Curtin was largely in excess of all
former years, proves conclusively that the ballot
boxes have been tampered with. A meeting of
the Democratic voters of that ward was held early
last week, at which a list was taken of those resi
dents who testified, under oath, that they voted for
WeddWatd fox Governor on the .cocoa Tweed - 0 of
October. The result of this count proved that 150
men voted for Woodward in that ward, whereas
but 1 7 - 8 votes w ere returned for him by the election
officers? An adjourned meeting was held by the
Democracy of the same ward on Saturday evening,
at which seven additional persons came forward and
took a solemn oath that they voted for Woodward.
This number, added to the list previously taken,
swells the aggregate to 157—0 r 79 more men who
swear they voted for Woodward in that ward than
the election officers returned for that gentleman
The chairman of the meeting pledged that the
list would be increased to at least 168.
A committee was appointed whose duty it should
be to investigate the election returns from every
affection district, and report every ease of fraud
that fell under their observation.
To CURIE DYSPEPSIA.—Hundreds--nay, thou
sands—are afflicted with this distressing malady,
and :would gladly avail themselves of any means
of relief. The following is highly recommended
as an infallible cure : Take a new axe, weighing
about four pounds, and put a white hickory han
dle in it; bore a bole in the top of the handle, fill
the hole with gum camphor, and seal it up. Then
take the axe and cut vigorously at a pile of cord
wood, until the heat of the hand dissolves the gum
camphor dePoSited in the end of the handle.
MONSTER BASK.-A public meeting of bankers
and capitalists was held at New York on Thursday
evening, at which it was resolved expedient to
organize a National Bank in that city, with a cap.
ital office millions, with the privilege of extending
it to $50,000,000, by such additions, from time to
time, as may be deemed expedient. The neces
sary steps were taken to commence the procure
ment of subscriptions to the stock.
ADVANCE IN PRICE.—The journeymen cabinet
makers of Lancaster have adopted a new scale of
prices of the different kinds of work they are em
ployed upon, which is some advance upon the old
scale. The employers, knowing that the high
price of living compelled the journeymen to de
mand the increase, agreed to the advance, and no
"strike" was necessary.
QUARTERMASTER'S DEPARTMENT.—It 18 Calcu
lated that the total expenditures of the United
States Quartermaster's Department for the fiscal
year ending-Tune 30, 1864, will amount to some
where in the neighborhood of $375,000,000 or
$400,000,000. Of this amount the Clothing Bu
reau alone will swallow upwards of $100,000,000.
NATIONAL BANKS.-Up to Octeber 14th, 1863,
one hundred and five National Banks have been
established in the Northern States, under the new
banking act. The official reports of these banks
show an aggregate capital of $12,776,000. The
capital of thy Pennsylvania banks amounta to
$1,271,500.
