COMMUTATION MONEY.-A Washington dispatch
mays that the receipte of money pai4 by drafted
mon now amount to $9,000,000, which, it is ex
pected, will be increased by one or two millions
more. The whole of this saw, it is said, is to be
appropriated to recruiting under the recent proc
lamation of the President.
ON A STRIKE.—The journeyman shoemakers of
Lancaster held a meeting on Monday night, and
adopted a scale of prices to bo hereafter paid for
shoemaking, which is to be presented to Ihe bosses
for their concurrence. Several of the dealers have
already agreed to give the advance asked. The
amount of the advance demanded by the 139119 9f
St. Crispin is not stated.
NEW COURTS MARTIAL —A court composed of
invalid officers has been formed la Washington, of
which Col. Warren, of the 10th Pennsylvania Re
serves, has been appointed President. Another
court martial has also been formed for the trial of
military officers, of which Col. Roy Stone, 149th
Pennsylvania Volunteers, is the President. The
members are all under medical treatment, al
though able to perform light duty.
FRESH AIR AVP FEvert.—A Parisian physician
declares pure, fresh air to be the best specific for
fevers. Considering typhus fever to be a kind of
paralysis or asphyxia of the vital functions, occa
sioned by the inhalation of lethiferous atmosphere
either from a typhoid patient or some other morbid
source, admits air freely to the invalid's bed-room,
to which plan he attributes many remarkable cures.
Ile says there can be no infection in the open air;
fresh air moreover enables the ;Mint to take
stimulants which he could not otherwise bear.
NABOTIg POTSONS.-It has been discovered that
the effects of narcotic poisons may be neutralized,
and in a great measure destroyed, by pouring oold
water on the face and head. Et girl, accidentally
poisoned in England by laudanum, bad all the
usual remedies administered without dice! ; when
gold water was applied, however, she breathed More
easily and bled from the nose. The treatment
with water being suspended, she relapsed into
coma; being resumed, she again rallied, and in a
Jay or two was completely recovered.
NOTED. FORGER CAUGHT--A Washington dis
patch announces the arrest, in Canada, of John S.
Piebl, who, it will be remembered, last summer
forged the name of Capt. Thompkins, Q. M., to re
ceipts for horses to the amount of $40,000. The
gay Piehl resided in Pittsburg at the time, where
be kept a drinking saloon. There are some six or
seven charges of perjury pending against hint in
that city, so that, ehouid the report of his capture
prove true, he will in all probability pass the next
ten years of his life in the retirement of the peni
tentary.
Tun AMATEUR PSRFORMANCS To-ato nr..--We
hope our citizens will remember the entertainment
to be given by the Harrisburg Thespian Associa
tion at Brant's Hall to-night. The universally
favorite play of "boodles" will be produced, to be
followed by the barletta of "rhe New Footman."
The music will be of the best order, under the
direction of Prof. Weber. We have before ex.
plained the object of this enterprise, and have ad
verted to the genuine theatrical talent of the ama
teurs composing the association. In behalf of
their enterprise and the humane character of its
object, we bespeak for them a liberal patronage.
ARRIVAL EKTRAORDINARY.—The 11. S. steamer
Bermuda, which arrived at Philadelphia on Sun
ilay, hrought two fine eagles, male and female.—
These eagles took refage in the Bermuda during a
storm, off thecoast of Texas, and were taken pos
session of by Acting Master Smith. They were
presented to Capt. Worden, of the Navy Yard, and
Capt. Wells, of the Galena, and these gentlemen
turned the gift over to the Union Volunteer Re
freshment Saloon, of Philadelphia. If these proud
44 birds of Jove" are to be denied the free air and
the snow-capped cliff - in which they were nurtured,
no more fitting place of confinement could be as
signed them_
HORRIBLE MURDER.—On Monday morning last,
Mrs_ Ellen Jones and John Barrett were found
dead at the house of the former, about a mile west
of Media, in Delaware county. The bodies were
horribly mutilated and the murder had evidently
been committed with an axe wbieh was found close
by. Mrs. Jones kept a small tavern, and Barrett
was there all day Sunday, and in the evening is
represented to have been aiu6h intoaieated. The
murderer, after committing the deed, evidently
washed himself carefully, as a bloody towel and
water with blood in it were found in the house.—
A young man named Wilkinson was subsequently
arrested at liestonville upon suspicion of having
committed the murder. mfrs. Jones leaves two
children, one of whom says that Wilkinson killed
the parties. He admits having been at the house
on Sunday, but left early in the evening. The mo
tive for the murder is not known.
ICR FOR DIPTHERIA.-400 is the best remedy for
this dreadful disease that has been discovered
Dr. De Grand, a celebrated French physician, after
having used the remedy for the past twelve years,
without having met with a single failure, pm/min
i:MS ice an infallible specific. A correspondent of
an eastern paper vouches very strongly for the ef
ficacy of ice as a cure for diptheria and all ordinary
inflammations of the throat. The manner of ap
plication is as follows
Break up a small lump of ice in a towel and put
pieces in a bowl. Take position slightly inclined
backward, either in a chair or on a *ofe. Proeeed
for half an hour with a teaspoon to feed yourself
with small lumps of ice, letting them dissolve
slowly in the back part of the month or the en
trance of the throat. A single such application
will often break up a common sore throat, which
otherwise Would have a course of two or three
days. In ease of a very bad sore throat, use the
ice frequently and freely. In ease of ulceration or
diptheria, keep a small lump of ice constantly in
the month.

Tna liora Fine Coursar.—For some menthe
past the engine house of the Hopo fire company
has been greatly in want of repairs. This was
particularly the ease with the ground floor, which
was badly dilapidated, holes being broken through
it in some places so large as to endanger the limbs
of the firemen when taking out their engine and
apparatus of a dark night. The company appealed
to the proper city authorities to make the neces
sary repairs, bat this they neglected or failed to
do. The patience of the "livers" finally gave
way, and at a meeting held some weeks ago, a reso
lution was passed declaring the company out of
service until the repairs had been made. In this
action the company was perfectly justifiable. They
have performed efficient service at all hours and
On all occasions, frequently at great personal in
convenience—and this not only without pay, but
at an actual expense to themselves.
We are pleased, however, to state that the au
thorities have begun needed repairs upon the
"Hive," and that the building will soon be reno
vated. A new floor is being laid in the engine
room, and the room itself is to be extended seteral
feet at the back part. It is due to the Hope boys
to say that they do the greater part o f the work of
repairing themselves, without charge, so that the
authorities are simply at the expense of furnishing
the material. We may therefore expect soon to
see this large and effective company in working
order, and '•keeping house" in the old-fashioned
style.
—We would state in this connectiGn that the
apparatus of the company is scattered at various
points through the oily_ If, therefore, they fail to
appear at any fire which may happen for a week
or two, the public will understand the reason of
their ben-appearance.
A Sao AFFAIR.—Mr. Michael Coble, one of the
Inspectors of election in Hamilton township,
Franklin county, was killed by a soldier while re
turning from the polls. In company with several
citizsus, he bad just passed a house of very bad
character on the road, when some persona in the
rear of his party became embroiled with some sol
diers in front of this house. By this time Mr.
Coble had passed on some distance, when the sol
diers, pursuing the persons with whom they had the
difficulty, fired several shots, one of which struck
Mr. Coble in the bank part of the head, coming 40
under the chin, and causing his death in a short time.
A guard was sent to the place, who arrested a sol
dier in or near the house, and who attteempting to
escape was fired at by the guard, unfortunately
wounding one of their own number seriously.—
Coble, the victim of this outrage, was a man
of excellent character, a quiet, peaceable and inof
fensive citizen, and his sad fate will be deeply la
mented.

names of John Horst, of Dayton, and Thomas

a further hearing. The third perova included in
the warrant was not found.
MV9I2ItIOIIR DICAPPEARANCE. - An invalid sol
dier named William Berry left the hospital at
Camp Curtin on Tuesday, dressed only in a shirt
and pair of drawers. Nothing has since been seen
of him. The probability is that his mind was im
paired by sickness, as ho had for some days pre.
viously been in a depressed state of mind, and bad
been heard to express the wish that some one
would put an end to his existence. It is supposed
that in that state of derangement be found hie way

by drowning himself.
