There are some six or seven charges of perjury pending against hint in that city, so that, ehouid the report of his capture prove true, he will in all probability pass the next ten years of his life in the retirement of the peni tentary. ICR FOR DIPTHERIA.-400 is the best remedy for this dreadful disease that has been discovered Dr. De Grand, a celebrated French physician, after having used the remedy for the past twelve years, without having met with a single failure, pm/min i:MS ice an infallible specific. A correspondent of an eastern paper vouches very strongly for the ef ficacy of ice as a cure for diptheria and all ordinary inflammations of the throat. The manner of ap plication is as follows Break up a small lump of ice in a towel and put pieces in a bowl. Take position slightly inclined backward, either in a chair or on a *ofe. Proeeed for half an hour with a teaspoon to feed yourself with small lumps of ice, letting them dissolve slowly in the back part of the month or the en trance of the throat. A single such application will often break up a common sore throat, which otherwise Would have a course of two or three days. In ease of a very bad sore throat, use the ice frequently and freely. In ease of ulceration or diptheria, keep a small lump of ice constantly in the month. I===l Tna liora Fine Coursar.—For some menthe past the engine house of the Hopo fire company has been greatly in want of repairs. This was particularly the ease with the ground floor, which was badly dilapidated, holes being broken through it in some places so large as to endanger the limbs of the firemen when taking out their engine and apparatus of a dark night. The company appealed to the proper city authorities to make the neces sary repairs, bat this they neglected or failed to do. The patience of the "livers" finally gave way, and at a meeting held some weeks ago, a reso lution was passed declaring the company out of service until the repairs had been made. In this action the company was perfectly justifiable. They have performed efficient service at all hours and On all occasions, frequently at great personal in convenience—and this not only without pay, but at an actual expense to themselves. We are pleased, however, to state that the au thorities have begun needed repairs upon the "Hive," and that the building will soon be reno vated. A new floor is being laid in the engine room, and the room itself is to be extended seteral feet at the back part. It is due to the Hope boys to say that they do the greater part o f the work of repairing themselves, without charge, so that the authorities are simply at the expense of furnishing the material. We may therefore expect soon to see this large and effective company in working order, and '•keeping house" in the old-fashioned style. —We would state in this connectiGn that the apparatus of the company is scattered at various points through the oily_ If, therefore, they fail to appear at any fire which may happen for a week or two, the public will understand the reason of their ben-appearance. A Sao AFFAIR.—Mr. Michael Coble, one of the Inspectors of election in Hamilton township, Franklin county, was killed by a soldier while re turning from the polls. In company with several citizsus, he bad just passed a house of very bad character on the road, when some persona in the rear of his party became embroiled with some sol diers in front of this house. By this time Mr. Coble had passed on some distance, when the sol diers, pursuing the persons with whom they had the difficulty, fired several shots, one of which struck Mr. Coble in the bank part of the head, coming 40 under the chin, and causing his death in a short time. A guard was sent to the place, who arrested a sol dier in or near the house, and who attteempting to escape was fired at by the guard, unfortunately wounding one of their own number seriously.— Coble, the victim of this outrage, was a man of excellent character, a quiet, peaceable and inof fensive citizen, and his sad fate will be deeply la mented. ===lll SUPPOSED PICKPOCKETS.-01:ficar Fry, depot po liceman, yesterday made oath before Alderman Kline, to the effect that he had observed the move ments of three men at t'Le depot, and had good reason to believe them pickpockets. A warrant for their arrest was placed in the hands of officer Campbell, who succeeded in nabbing two of them near the Brady Home, The parties, who gar, the names of John Horst, of Dayton, and Thomas Burns, of Pittsburg, were committed to prison for a further hearing. The third perova included in the warrant was not found. MV9I2ItIOIIR DICAPPEARANCE. - An invalid sol dier named William Berry left the hospital at Camp Curtin on Tuesday, dressed only in a shirt and pair of drawers. Nothing has since been seen of him. It is supposed that in that state of derangement be found hie way to the river or canal, and there realiz 3d his wish by drowning himself.
