CItILD ErRNEP TO Da Tu. - 0n Monday evening
:2et, a litt:e girl aged three years, daughter of Mr.
Nathaniel Weigle, residin g in the borough of York,
was burned to death. She had been put to bed a
Ebert time nrevions, and a lighted lamp left in the
rqem, the lames from which communicated with
:be bed clothing. The fact was not discovered
until the smell of the burning bed clothes attracted
the attention of Mrs. Weigle. When she entered
the room the child was dead, baying been horribly
burned about the body.
THE COAL TRADE.—The coal trade continues
very active. The receipts for the season at Phila
delphia reach the enormous segregate of 7,514,871
tons, being 1,476,707 in excess of the tonnage from
the same sources to corresponding time last year.
The demand for coal is still in excess of the supply,
and from the present scarcity of vessels and trans
portation facilities it is not likely that the coming
winter's production will more than equal the cur
rent demand, so that the next spring will open
with empty yards.
CEAPLATES NOT TO BE HELD AS PRISONERS. —
General "Meredith, Commissioner for the exchange
of prisoners, has succeeded in effecting the release
of all the chaplains of the l3nion army now held
as prisoners of war by the rebels. In return our
government has released all rebel chaplains.
About twenty-eve were sent to city Point a few
days ago, in pursuance of this arrangement. This
policy, it is understood, will be carried out in the
future, and chaplains will no longer be held as
prisoners ef war.
Mau KlLLan.—On Saturday last, a man named
John Johnston, a carpenter in the employ of the
Pennsylvania railroad, was killed at the outer
depot at that road, this aide of Pittsburg. It was
his duty to couple the ears of the aCCOMModation
train, and being somewhat behind time, was in a
hurry to have them coupled before the engine
came along. In his haste he pushed one of the
cars with such force as to give it more than the
ordinary momentum in coupling, and stooping to
pat the link in its proper place, his head was
caught between the bumpers and horribly crushed.
OH, DON'T !-A Washington dispatch says that
"den. Butler has again applied for an astir cams
wand, and intimates that he will resign if not
given one soon." What an energetic General the
General is! No sooner has he finished his active
stumping campaign through Pennsylvania,, than
he again applies for an "active command," and
"threatens to.resign if not given one soon." The
powers that be shouldn't allow this. Can't they
assign the victorious hero to a command in New
York, where one of old Ben's kind of battles is to
be fought this fall? At all events, we hope the
Beast will recall his rash threat, and still perform
before the public in the political ring at $24,000
per annum.
tRLE FitaT,=Mr. Jobe Mettler, fgrwrly
residing near Basta*, and now in his 89th year,
did up some tall walking lately. Ho has been a
resident of the state of Ohio for the last two y ears,
but getting tired of Buckeye life, concluded to re
turn to his old hone. He preferred walking to
railroading and ateamboating, and accordingly sot
out on his long journey on the 21st of September,
arriving at Easton on Saturday, October 16, thus
making the trip in Kum days. The 4ietelice
traveled when he reaches home will be four hun
dred and fifty-six miles, in sixteen days !' The old
gentleman boasts that he can out two cords of wood
in one day without any difficulty. Bully for the
90-year old! The marshal ought to enroll his
name in the "first el ass.."
Wno is Re—On the field of Gettysburg, after
the battles, the dead body of a Union soldier was
found, holding in his clasped hands an ambratype
picture of three children, a girl and two boys, aged
apparently about nine, seven and five years. In
the picture, the youngest child, a boy, is seated in
a high chair, between his elder brother and his
sister, while the dresses of the two latter are made
of the same material. The soldier was buried on
the field where he fell, and his grave is marked,
but his name could not be ascertained. It is hoped,
however, that he may yet be identified by means
of the ambrotype of the children found in his
hands when his body was discovered. The picture
is now in possession of Dr_ Bourns, 1104 Spring
Garden street, Philadelphia, who can be called
upon or addressed in reference to it.
A LONG NEZIPIED ImpaovitmEnr.—An umbrella
has long been considered as belonging to the stock
of common property which anybody may appro
priate who can first lay his hands upon it, despite
the reported decision of the Supreme Court to the
contrary. An ingenious inventor named Foote,
who believes in the sacredness of private rights,
has invented an umbrella lock stand, which secures
to every owner of an umbrella his inalienable
right to it_ It is like an ordinary umbrella eland,
but as soon as the umbrella is placed in it, a re
volving plate grasps and secures it, and can only
be unlocked by a key no bigger than a dime, and
easily carried in the pocket. • This article has bten
introduced into Philadelphia for sale. Some in
ventor has only to secure a man's hat in the same
way to make his personal chattels proof against
being carried off against his will.
A Cuasosrry.—Some workmen engaged in dig
ging a trench in South Duke street, Lancaster, the
other day, twelve feet below the surface of the
ground, came upon the inner sole and heel of what
was once a lady's shoe, both in a good state of
preservation. The sole at the toe terminates in
a sharp point, which indicates that it belonged to
a fair damsel of the olden time, and has lain
buried for eighty or a handfed years. The heel is
composed of a neatly shaped block of wood, which
at one time was covered with leather, a portion of
which still remains. The leather gives some idea
of what leather was in the time of our great grand
fathers—leather such as was made in the m ore
virtuous days of the republic, before the era of
contractors and pine shaving soles had come upon
ns. This shoe was found in front of the Trinity
Lutheran church, at one time a low swamp, wh:ch
was filled up at an early day.
How it Russ.—Wherever the Craft b as taken
place it has been found that, as far it 9 raising men
was concerned, it wee a failure. All classes and
conditions have, where it was in their power,
avoided personal service by paying commutation,
and the fewest number possible have suffered them
selves to be held for service when drafted. This
will be seen by reference to any published list of
exemptions in any district. Take, for instance,
the list of exemptions made by the board at Easton
on bur days of last week, which foots up as fol
lows: Drafted men held, 2; substitutes accepted,
2, paid commutation, 191 I exempted for disabil
ity, 57 : exempted for all ether causes, 37. Total
number examined, 289—0 f whom but 2 were held
sad bnt 2 furnished substitutes. If another draft
be made, it is clear that, in order to make it effec
tive, it will be necessary to abrogate the clause of
the act providing for the payment of commuta
tion.

Reader, from what source do you think we de
rive the above props:4llkm ? It is true, every
word of it, and pity 'tie 'tis true"—pity that i.
should be needful to address rich an admonition
to the government, so truthfully charging it by
implication with having filled the best places in
its gift with insincere, hypocritical, loud-menthe.
demagogues, "who are not willing to sacrifice life
and property in its defence." We repeat, it is
true and sensible, and were the government to
"rejcct from its confidence and recognition" the
class named, it would sweep out out of office a fal
half of those now enjoying Federal patronage.
But who makes this startling proposition ? Who
dictates thus to the government? Perhaps it is
some brave soldier, who returns wounded from the
field where he has perilled his life for his country,
and whose heart swells with indignation as be
sees most of the Oates filled with drawling, stay
at-home demagogues, who have never offered to
"sacrifice life or property" in behalf of their
country. Or perhaps the advice comes from
'copperhead," who has been in the military ser
vice of his country, but who, has no show for
patronage because he didn't stay at home and blow
the trumpet for shoddy.
Well, it is none of these. Would you believe it,
reader, when we tell you that the above sentence
is a literal extract from an editorial in the "Tele
graph?" Don't laugh; it may strike you as being
absurd and ludicrous as coining from there, but
such is the fact. It was not originally latended
as a "goak." Read it carefully, and then ponder.
What would be the effect on Bergner, if govern
ment should act on his advice Y He would be
called upon to hand over his postmaster's cemmis
sion instanter. He lute never taken up arms for
the government—and never will. His editorial
corps have not been in the army, nor are they
represented there. The Deacon may, like Arte
mns Ward, be willing to "sacrificer all his able
bodied relations "in defence of the government,"
but, so far as he himself is concerned, he has done
nothing but stay at home, shoveling up the green
backe, preaching up the beauties of the conscrip
tion, and urging men to go to the war. So far
from "sacrificing life and property" for his govern
meat, the late rebel raid proved conclusively that
he wouldn't do either, provided he had twenty
four hours' notice and the trains kept running.
What a beautiful specimen is he to preach up the
ditty of making sacrifices. Were his advice to the
government acted upon, he and his boss • writer
would be driven from the governmental crib, to
browse henceforth among the thistles of retired
life.
WEATHER INDICATIONS.-Thtt weather prognosti
cator of the Pittsburg "Dispatch" has establihed
a very fair reputation for accuracy and reliability
in that department, and our own observation has
satisfied us of the general•eorrectnesa of his con .
elusions. In feet, he is the most reliable and lc_
curate man connected with that concern. In his
last weather article be says: "In my article of the
10th of Sept. I stated that if it stormed on the 12th
inst., there would be rain on an average every five
days until the middle of October. There have
been eight several days on which it rained in the
36 days. Having been unexpectedly called away
the last month, I was unable to produce my month
ly indications." He calculates the indications from
Oct. 12th to Nov. 11th as follows: "Twenty-four
cloudy and part cloudy days, of which ten will be
rainy and six clear sunshine days; weather mode
rate, with no hopes of a rise in the river to the
middle of November." Nous verrons.
MARRIAGE BY FRIENDS' CEREMONY.—Those of
our readers who have never seen the marriage cer
emony of the tlnaker sect, might have enjoyed
the privilege yesterday forenoon at Alderman
Kline's office, where Robert Eastman and Ann
Eliza White, both of Bucks county, were duly
united before that official. The ceremony was very
short and simple. The magistrate said nothing
whotaver. The man repeated the formula ; "I take
this woman to be my wadded wife, to live together
in the holy estate of matrimony ; I will love, At.
as long as we. both shall live." The women then
repeated the same, merely changing the form to
snit the sex, and "they twain were one flesh,"
without a word from the Alderman.
Coanncrion.—ln noticing the case of a girl who
was arrested the other day for wearing male at
tire, we stated that she obtained her clothes at the
public house of Mr. Ryan, on State street, where
she was stopping. This was incorrect. The outfit
was furnished by a person named Jos. Lyech, of
whose occupation or whereabouts we were not in
formed. The matter is not one of great moment,
but we desire that Mr. Ryan's name should not be
compromised in connection with it.
ALTERED TIMMY .110TE,%—catf9f of persons
ar r ested for offering altered Treasury notes are
numerously reported in our exchanges. From the
frequency with which these notes are offered, there
is no doubt that a large number of them are in cir
culation. Shopkeepers should closely scrutinize
the greenback, offered them, especially those pur
porting to be 810 issues.
A MUMS* Gl7N.—The patterns have been made

will have a bore of twenty inches Its length
will bittwenty feet, and its greatest diameter at
the breach, five feet four inches. It will weigh

THE ARMY Hosertais.—The returns from the
