AGRICULTURE. TH HAMBURG FOWL. 'the Hamburg fowl is a very useful and im portant denizen of our poultry yard. The hens lay nearly every day until the moulting reason ; hence they obtained the name of " everlasting layers," but they very seldom sit. This is in all probability owing to their confined condition in this country ; for it is said that when these birds have a free wood land range, they frequently set to the task of incubation with as much diligence as other fowls. Of this fowl we have three varieties. The first is the Penciled Hamburg, which is of two colors—golden and silver—and is very minutely marked. The hens of both should Nave the body clearly penciled across with several bars of black, and the hackle in both sexes should be perfectly free from dark marks. The cocks do not exhibit the pencilings, but are white or brown in the golden or silver birds respectively. Their form is compact, and their attitudes graceful and upright. In addition to their common appointive% they are also known in different parts of England as Chitteprates, Creoles or Eorals, Bolton _Bays and Greys, and in some parts of York shire by the wrong name of Corsican Fowls. They are imported in large numbers from Hol land, but those bred in this country are greatly superior. Of the Speckled or Spangled Hamburg, which is a favorite breed with many persons, there are two kinds—the golden-spangled and the silver-spangled. The general color of the former is golden or orange yellow, each feather having a glossy dark-brown or black tip, par tici:la-4y remarkable on the hackles of the cock• and the wing coverts, and also on the darker feathers of the breast. The female is yellow or orange brown, the feathers in like manner being margined with black. The silver-spangled variety is distinguished by the ground color of the plumage being of a silver white with perhaps a tinge of straw-yellow, every feather being margined with glossy black. Both of these varieties are extremely beautiful, .the hens laying freely. third variety is the Black Hamburg, the Omega of which is a beautiful black, with metallic lustre. It possesses the two-fold ad vantage of being a noble looking bird and ex ceedingly good layer. On the whole, the Ham bn_vgitt. a capital fowl, and one which is de servedly vain.ed. I quite agree with Bally in stating the pen ciled Hambargs should be : Cocks—Double comb, full of points, ending in a large one at the end turned up, no hollow in the centre of it; white deaf ear; ample tail, foundation color black, but the sickle feathers silvered at the edge; with Lody, save sometimes a little spottinglowards the binder parts or a cheat nut patch on the wing; taper blue legs; very cheerful carriage. Size and weight are not essential. Hens—Double combs, firmly fund on the head, not inclining to either side; body accu xotely penciled, each feather being distinctly marked; ample tail; tapes blue legs; very cheerful carriage. Size and weight are not essential. Gold, same as silver, altering one color for the Other_ spangled Hamburge s—Cooks—Very large but not disproportioned combs, full of points, the larger at the extremity pointing upwards ; dark rim round the eye; slate-colored legs ; riorided hackle and saddle ; perfectly laced wing; ample tail, with sickle feather; proud upright carriage. Hens—Firmly set double scisb ; slate-colored legs; clearly laced wing, with black; dark rim round the eyes; span gled body, neither laced nor penciled ; clouded hackle ; ample tail, tipped with black.—Scot ii.th Farin.cr. FEEDING MEAL TO STOCK. Dozbtless many of your readers have had longer experience in feeding meal, and per haps know as economical and effectual manner of feeding it as the subscriber. I believe there are a few, at least, of your patrons, like many farmers whom I know, who feed from four Co eight quarts of meal a day to one beef creature, ti l they feed from seven to ten cwt. of meal to one beef, and who never slaughter an ordi nary sized beef that yields upwards of forty pounds of rough tallow. These farmers feed their meal dry. This is a great waste. My practice in fattening beef and swine, as well as feeding cows for milk, has been to pour boil ing water en as much meal as would not make the animal's bowels move too freely, at night and morning ; when the mush is cool, give it to the cow or pig. In covering the meal with belling water in this way, the starch of the grain is dissolved, and the latent nutritive pro perties extracted, and the animal receives the entire nutriment of the grain. I calculate stock do not, in eating dry meal, receive more than one-half of the goodness of the meal. There is not action enough in mas tication, or heat sufficient in the stomach of the animal, to extract and receive the entire and real sweetness of the grain. Had I roots I should feed them to my fattening beef. But not having any, I feed only meal and hay, and I have fattened two ordinary sized cows, two years past, and to which I only fed three cwt. of meal each, and they each yielded upwards of forty pounds of rough tallow. Once a week I throw into the mush a little salt, and occa sionally a, table-spoonful of good ashes. My experience teaches me that one cwt. of meal as described above, is equal to two cwt. fed dry. Try it, young farmer, and see if yop cannot endorse this. A PORTABLE SHEEP RACK. sheep farmer of Columbia county, Ohio, who has tried several kinds of racks, gives the following description of one, which prevents tmewiing„ is in every way satisfactory, and oe simple that any farmer can make one. It con sists of four posts, three feet long, and, if made of three by three scantling, will be heavy cnough. t Two bottom boards, one inch thick and ten or twelve wide, and two for the top, one inch thick and five or six wide. These boards are placed horizontally for the sides of the rack, and similar boards, two feet long, are nailed to the posts at each end. The rack may he about twelve feet long, and two feet is a very suitable width. Upon these horizontal hoards are nailed uprights, six inches wide, and placed six inches apart. This makes a cheap, portable rack, whioh we like in every inspect —N E. Farina: ----4 NEW MUSA U..
