PREPARED To NUET.—More than six thousand
suits of civilians' clothes lyre been taken from
conscripts and substitutes at Racer's Island, New
York, worn under their. uniforms to enable them
to escape.

AN XX CUIEWITSAT DIDN'T ANBWER.—An exchange
-says that a conscript recently appeared before the
board of enrollment, and desired to be exempted
forthwith, that he might return to hie home in the
country. l'What are 'our claims?" demanded the
doctor. "Pm enttreirdependent upon my mother
for support,"was the Unoeent reply. Whereupon
the doctor assured him that the government
would immediately-rdieve his mother of so cm
suitable a burden.
Tas Eneenow.—The election, as we before re
marked, passed eggeletly. It took place day be
fore yesterday. We wish we had time to go a
tithing—it is such a mild, soothing, traneallkkg
pastime. We have nothing further to add on the
-subject, bat might remark in this connection that
astronomers say the next transit of Venue will
take place in (1874, and the next afterward in
1682. Where will be great preparations to lake
observations in ali parts of the world, audit is 'ex
pected that the can will be fetnd to be four million

win endeavor to-be present and give a correct•re
portcf this grand affair. So no more at present.
GRICICSUAOK WEDDINGS.—In Germany married
couples celebrate the twenty-fifth and fiftieth an
nivetvaries of their married life—the former styled
the "silver wedding," and the latter the "golden
wedding." Here in this fast country of America
we have intredemd the "tin wedding," which is
celebrated after twelve years of married life.-
31aving commenced an innovation, and having
tin, silver and golden weddings, it now remains
for oar people to establish the "greenback wed
ding," to he celebrated by the parties by the pre
gontatWi of promissory notes, payable at the
remotest date, which would be in accordance -with
the character of the security from which the occa
sion derived its name.
Erreir-me Entnerniss.—The mania for ghost
seeing, which like many another mania, has risen
4 10 1 for the time being swept everything before it,
is still at its height. The theatres of the great
cities of Europe and America are nightly crowded
Id* horrified audiences, all anxious to explore the
mystery than involves the spectres which stalk
over the stage, shadowy and incorporeal as if they
bad just risen from the pale realms of the dead.
These scenic illusions base begotten a spirit of
inquiry in record to the genuine ghost question,
and certain practical minds are taking hold of that
question in a business-like way. A "Ghost Club"
has been established in England not a club of
ghosts, but one to find them out and cultivate
their aequaintanoe- The club has advertised for
a haunted house, and will publish noted of their
discoveries. It is to be hoped that the club will
have some success in their undertaking, and de
monetrate clearly to the world whether ghosts are
a reality or a humbug.
A SPLEADID RAILROAD Itame.g.—The railroad
bridge which is to be ereeted over the Ohio at
Steubenville will be one of the most substantial
structures in the country. The bridge will be en
tirely of iron. It will consist of eight spans, four
of two hundred and thirty-five feet, three of two
hundred and ten feet, and one of three hundred
and twenty feet, making a total length of /890
feet. The channel span, which is the longest, will
have an elevation of ninety feet above the water.
The width of t he bridge from edge to edge will be
sixteen feet six inches, while the height from the
masonry to the top will be twenty-three feet: It
is estimated that the weight of the bridge will be
one ton and a half per foot, making an aggregate
weight of 2,835 tons, or 5,670,000 pounds. The
contractors are Messrs. Piper & *Milner, of Pitts
burg, who are pushing the work forward as rapidly
as passible. The work of erection will be ootn
meneed about the last of this month, and it is ex
petted that the Scat span will be completed during
the present season.
H ow To hilmoT Counsesdiho season foe mid,"
and influenza is now upon us, and those who have
consumptive tendencies should guard against them.
The most effective means in securing this protee
tion is bathing and Motion. While the surface
has a vigorous circulation eolde are impossible.—
The eold bath, with the use of rough towels, flesh
brushes and. haiv.glovee , contributes most effee
tuany to the maintenance of such a circulation.—
Avoidance of hot drinks is another preventive
create. The wool droughts of coffee and tea
produce much susceptibility to colds. Consump
tives should, for this reason, use cold drinks.—
Sleeping and sitting in well-ventilated Teems is
another most important prophylactic means. Fur
nace-heated and unventilated houses create a lia
bility to colds, to say nothing of the direct influ
onea of the Vitiated air. Many colds On taken
through the feet. A frequent cold water foot-bath,
with sharp friction and slapping with the hands,
can scarcely b e everrond, Stamping the feet, if
so circumstanced that the noise is unobjectionable,
standing on one foot and kicking with the other
in many direction ! in the air, greatly improves
the circulation.
FUN FOR THE MILLION !-At Brant'e Halt To
tiVt.—A novel and interesting entertainment is
offered to the fun loving public at Brant's Hall to
night, when Prof. Harry Lee will exhibit the sin
gular and laughable effects of the chemical agent
discovered by Priestly, and which is widely known
as Laughing Gas. This gas is known to scientific
men as nitrous oxide gas. It is administered by
inhalation, in the same manner as ether, but its
effects, while perfectly harmless, are far more as
tonishing and amusing. The person under its in-
Racine becomes inspired with life and humor, m
acaws grotesque attitudes, indulges in lively
scintillations of wit, and, in short, is transformed
into a comedian of the first water—laughing im
moderately all the while. The gas produce's an
involuntary disposition to laugh, and, as mirth is
contagions, the entire audience are frequently con.
vulsed with laughter, resulting from sympathy
with the subject who is under the influence.
414 Laughing gas is an anmsthetie agent, although
its administration is not attended with any of the
dangers resulting from chloroform. Under its in
fluence, teeth may be extracted and surgical ope
rations performed without pain. The subject lives
and moves in a ideal world, and is for the time
being perfectly happy.
The Professor will be assisted hills performance
by Prof. Haller, a magician of great skill and ex
tensive reputation, whose marvelous feats of magic
have astonished those who witnessed them in
Earope and America.
We oommend the rare bill which Prof. Lee
presents for to-night and te-totorrow night to the
lovers of fon. Admission twenty-five cents.

the historiographer of the Mackerel Brigade, while
lately approaching the °aphelian city, enema

describes
When very near the city, on my return home, I
met a chap weighing about two hundred pounds,
who was on his way to a lawyer's to get Ma ex
•emptione from the draft duty fixed.
"see here, my patriotic says I rather
=skeptically, •'how do you some to be exempt?"
" I pm exempt," Bays he, in a profoundly me
lancholy manner, " because am suffering from a
'broken heart."
" Hem!" says I.
cf It is true," says he, snitiliag diemslly, "I
asked the female of my heart to -have me. She
said I hadn't postage stamps enough to suit her
ideas of personal revenue, and she didn't care to
do my washing! That was enough. My heart,
you see, is broken, and ran riot an able-bodied
man."
Drafting, my boy, is of a nature to develop the
seeds of disease into the hitherto heathy human
system.

SPECIAL NOTICES.
THE GREAT SECRET.—It is ad
mitted by all physicians that the grand secret of health
and long life lies in keeping the blood and various fluids
of the body in a high degree of fluidity. When you
feel continued pain in the head or bowels, or any con
tinued uneasiness in any i prgan or other parts of the
body, you can prevent serious sickness by taking
BILANDRETHIS PILLS.
Bleeding may give momentary ease, because the blood
left will have more room. But as the body is made
from the bleed and enstained by the blood, to waste
our blood is to waste our life and ruin our constitution.
But Brandreth's Pills relieve the circulation as readily
as bleeding by only taking away what it can well spare,
and MET NITER 11,2".
Mrs. Hooper, of Bernet:4bl., Mass., was cured of Bt.
Vitas Dance, General Debility, poorness of blood and

clients and effeets, I yet know of no militant reams
why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes
himself to have received from any simple preparation,
in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit
of others.
I do this more readily in regard to nßoolissurs Germs

because I was prejudiced against them for years under
the impression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mix
ture. lam indebted to my Mend, Robert Shoemaker,
E for the removal of this prejudice by proper testytesty sq.,
and for encouragement to try them when sulieringfrom
great and long continued debility. The use of Mu*"
bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the
year, was followed by evident relief and restoration to
degree of bodily and mental vigor which I hid not fait
for six months before, and had almost despaired of re.
gaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for di
rooting me to the use of them .
