Chief Marshal. The excursion train for the grand
Democratic mass meeting at Lancaster will leave
the Pennsylvania railroad depot at 7 o'clock this
morning.
SIIESTITIITE ESCAPED.—John S. Shireman, of
.Marietta, who went as a substitute for a drafted
man, and atawatdo deserted, but was arreeted and
brought again to this place, has managed to effect
his escape, and is again at large.
OnnrrY.—A negro whO was drafted in Hunting
don says he would freely go to the army if this
war was for the Union, but as it is for freeing the
niggers, he is opposed to it. That darkey must
be a "Copperhead,"
THE Rebels and the Radicals detest the Union
as it was, and say it shall not be restored. The
Conservatives love the 'Union as it was, and say
that it shall be restored. What party, then, is the
true Union party, asks the _Louisville Journal.
RAILROAD Aeon:max.—An accident occurred on
the Pennsylvania railroad near Philadelphia on
last Monday afternoon, by which Mr. John Fox,
of Lancaster, conductor on a market car, received
a considerable fracture of the left leg.
Comurrrsn Suteroz.—A small terrier dog com
mitted suicide yesterday morning in canal street
by swallowing a piece of meat with poison on it.
He was thrown into the canal as food for the fish ;

TALL Suooruse.—Wo hoard of some shooting by
two gentlemen on the Alleghenies, which far ex
ceeds anything of the kind that has been done in
those parts for a number of years. The result of
24 hours shooting was ell gray and black squirrels,
4 Amor, and 1 woodcock.
Parmanc.—Collector Hood,of Lancaster county,
up to Tuesday last received frOMIO.IO drafted web
in that Bounty the sum of $351,000 as commuta
tion money_ This looks very encouraging for a
vigorous prosecution of the war; but as Lancas
ter gives every year an Abolition' majority of
5,000 and continues Thaddeus Stevens in Congress,
it is but fair that it should be overlooked.
A Lim Dias Warm BRING Sanzitspao.—Mrs.
Dr. I. H. Gemmill, of Altoona, whose husband
was being serenaded, left the chair in which she
was seated while listening to the music, and was
afterwards discovered lying on a bed suffering great
pain, from which she expired in a few minutes.
Her death was caused by apoplexy. She had re
tired the previous evening in her usual health and
in fine spirits.
NEWSPAPER Posranz.—A general ignorance of
the late law in regard to postage on newspapers
compels ns to insert the act passed by Congress re
lating to it:
On transient newspapers through the mails,
the postage, on one or more'parMrs in single pack
ages, provided the weight does not exceed four
ounces, is two eents if prepaid, and double that
amount will be exacted before delivery to the party
addressed, if not prepaid. This provision of the
law, however, does not apply to regular subscri
bers.
Ova WESlCtor.—Persons desiring copies of the
weekly can have them by calling at the counter.
This week's number is exceedingly interesting.
Its political department, with its original matter,
embraces all the interesting current topics. Its
news columns give carefully selected accounts of
the war, and other important events, besides the
latest telegraphic dispatch up to the time of going
to press, making it a paper that returns with profit
and pleasure the time and money to any person
that buys it.

Beidleman, the foreman in the stables at the foot
of market street, on suspicion of trying to steal a
horse. He had been observed loitering about the
stables for some time. Ia the afternoon a rope
belenging to him was fastened around the neck of
one of the horses; besides this, the animal bad the
appearance of having been severely beaten. The
evidence not being sufficient to prive him guilty,
be a -Le released.
RECUT ROBBBRIEB.--The banking bones of
Reynolds & Co., Bellefonte, was entered on the
night of the Bth inst., and robbed of $B,OOO in
gold and Over. A reward of $1,200 is offered for
the apprehension of the thief and the recovery of
the money. The supposed burglar is described as
being a tall, thin, square. shouldered man, who
had on dark clothes and wore a slouched bat and
side whiskers. It is supposed that he has been in
that town for some days, as his operations were
performed in such a manner as to show that he was
well acquainted with the premises.
The proprietor of the Clearfield House, Clearfield
town, was relieved of some $490 in greenbacks,
which was taken from a trunk by an expert thief.
Harry Davis and John Newcomer, of Lumber
City, Clearfield county, met with a similar misfor
tune—the former having been relieved of some
seven or eight hundred dollars in paper money,
and the latter of a lees sum in geld. ' •
A most daring robbery was committed in the
house of Mrs. Strickler, in York, on Saturday
morning last. The thief entered the house about
4 o'clock in the morning, while some of the family
were at • market, and breaking open a trunk took
from it n large sum of money. He remained in
the house until about eight o'clock, when a young
lady, who was on a visit to the family, in passing
through the house, came in contact with him, when
he took hold of her and threatened to kill her if
she made an alarm, then stuffing a hankerehief
.into her month threw her down stairs ? and made
his escape. The young lady was found in an in
sensible condition some time afterwards by the
family. She was lying in a critical condition
during the greater part of Saturday, front injuries
received and the effects of the fright. Dr. John
Hay was called in, and after administering the
necessary remedies, she gradually recovered. •

Rama ACCIDENTS.—We hear of repeated acci
dents occasioned by persona imprudently and fool
ishly experimenting on shells to see if they are
loaded. Wm. Frame, residing at Harney, Carroll
county, Md., recently lost his life in this ways His
brother, who bad secured a shell in a vice, either
ignorant of the danger or not knowing it was
loaded, was attempting to open it with a chisel,
when it exploded. He escaped himself, but Wil
liam, who was standing near, was struck in the
breast by several pieces with such force as to cause
his death the next day.
James M. Culp, an interesting son of Dar*el
Culp, of Gettysburg, was also killed by a like lin.
prudence; The deceased had opened a number of
shells without accident, but on Wednesday eve
ning, while at work on another in the cemetery
grounds, the shell exploded, fearfully lacerating
his hands and legs, and a piece entered his abdo
men. Death shortly relieved the sufferer.
On Sunday evening of last week a boy about
twelve years old, son of Levi Holland, of Horrors
town, Cambria county—adjoining Johnstown bo
rough—attached one end of a rope to the head of
their cow and the other end areund his body, and
attempted to ride the animal to the pasture field,
but the cow became frightened, ran, threw the
boy off, and dragged him more than a hundred
yards. The whole side of his head was crushed,
and after lingering in convulsions until 3 Veleta
next morning, death terminated his sufferings.
BITE OF A RATTLESNAKE CURED IN Two HOURS.-
Ia Petersburg, a carpenter, while engaged in re
moving some rotten timber, was bitten by a rattle
snake. In a few minutes his finger was swollen
to four times its natural size, and the red streaks
commenced running up his hand and wrist. A.
deadly languor came over him and his vision grew
dim, clearly indicating that the subtle poison that
was coursing through his veins, was rapidly ap
proaching the citadel of life. But a remedy was
tried, merely by way of experiment, which, to the
surprise of all present, acted like a charm, the
component parts of which were onions, tobacco
and salt, of equal parts, made into a poultice and
applied to the wound, and at the same time a cord
was bound tightly abort the wrist. In two hours
afterwards he had so far recovered as to be able to
resume his work. I know an old negro who eared
a boy that had been bitten by a mad dog, by the
same applieition.—Express.
ARREST OF A DESERTER.-A substitute from
Lebanon . county, whose name we did not learn,
was yesterday arrested in a house in South street,
between Second and Third, by a patroL He was
brought to this place from Lebanon, but on reach
ing here made his escape, and after hiding in dif
ferent places, he entered the yard of Mr. Grisinger
in Raspberry alley, and offered his wife forty dol
lars in greenbacks if she would only conceal him
for the night. This she refused, saying that it
would get her in trouble, and told him he must
leave. He then applied to Grisinger, offering
him twenty more, but with the same success. The
patrol was then seen coming up the alley and the
victim was caught while attempting to make his
egress into South street-
How THE MONEY Gloss.—The Johnstown Demo
crat says that an army contractor, who was for
merly a resident of Oambria county, a few days
ago exhibited to a friend in Harrisburg a govern
ment bond for one hundred and ninety thonsand
dollars, and another for nine thousand. He states
that he had assigned government hoods to the
amount of one hundred thousand dollars to each
of his children. By his own showing he is now a
millionaire. This is more notable from the fact
that two years ago he was not worth a dollar. This
one fact will serve to show the people where the
public treasure goes, and wby certain "loyal" gen
tlemen are so anxious for a "vigorous prosecution
of the war."
trvz • Wlssm—Some people love display, and
will even run into debt to gratify their foolish
passions. Others go on this principle while they
ean, and banish all thoughts of bad times, sickness
or old age. Others again, contract bad or expen
sive habits, and rather than make an attempt to
get rid of Wm, subtitit to their tyranny, and de
ceive themselves with the plea that they are ne
cessary to the full enjoyment of life: But the full
enjoyment of life consists in living wisely and
rationally. Transient pleasures may be purehased
too dearly and for hours of riotous enjoythent, days
and months of misery and pain may be the fruits.
