of purchasing good second-band furniture, most
of which is nearly now, will do well by attending
the sale.
A BAD Ilasrr.—We have heard of instances in
which children afflicted with contagions diseases
were allowed to go to school, and mingle with
others of the same age. This is all wrong. In
this way contagions diseases are too often kept
lingering in town.

Arruourrv.—How some people love to show
their authority. And this feeling is most felt is
those who have the least. We yesterday saw a

BIGGARS m hartuar.-There are many beggars

generally disagreeable and intrusive. It appears

WollaieS TONGUE.—PeopIe may women are very

to think so_ We saw one poor fellow exterminated

neighbors, a woman and a man. Just as they, were
in the midst of words, the woman told the man "he
had better lick his father again." No more was
necessary.

RATE AN EYE ON THE Fneas.—Now that the
time is fast approaching for the use of grates and
furnaces, people cannot be too careful to guard
against fire. Your furnaces stpnild be carefully
examined and repaired before the fall fires are
lighted, and particular care should be need to see
that no wood work is in contact with the hot air
Pipes- It is a fact which cannot be gainsayed,
that in fall most fires are to be traced to the use of
imperfectly constructed flues, furnace heaters and
stove pipes, and in carelessness in regard to gas
lucifer 'matches and red hot cinders. Peo-
Dia annisat Complain that they bare no warning,
and if disastrous fires occur from any of these
causes, the sufferers can only blame their own neg-
:igenee.

EXTRACT from the minutes of the vestry of St.
Stephen's Episcopal church, Harrisburg, Pa., at a
meeting held September sth, 1863.
Died, on Sunday, August 23d, 1863, at Philadel
phia, James Peacock, in the 76th year of hie age.
Thus, upon the Sabbath, the hand of God re
moved to his eternal rest, our aged and venerable
friend, and inasmuch as from the formation of this
parish, he was for so many years one of her war
dens and treasurers, and his services wage ever so
cheerfully given to promote her welfare, it is meet
that this vestry, of which he was an original mem
ber, should make some record of the loss we have
sustained ; therefore,
Resolved, First, That by the decease of our
former associate, it has pleased Him who doeth all
Mingo well, to lake from our dwelt a member
whose long and valuable membership formed a
part of her histoiy and whose counsels, means and
labors were always freely rendered to advance her
interests and to promote her prosperity.
tiooond, That to the oast of bis more than three
score years and ten, his seal for the welfare of this
parish, remained unabated, and his love for her
and the cause of the great Head of the Church,
knew no dimnnitien.
Third, Thot wt1(10 we deplore the loss we have
sustained, end know that we /Mall meet him ne
more in the courts of our earthly sanctuary to
unite in the humble confession, the familiar prayers
and praises, and the solemn avowal of our faith,
we rejoice in the belief that the aged Christian has
deputed to be with Christ end to join in the Te
Deum eternally ascending from the ransomed of
the Lord.
Fourth, That we know such words of consola
tion se we can utter to the bereaved wife are of
little worth. We can but point her to the inesti
mable promisee her God has made to the widow.
Attest : Wm. BUEHLER,
Secretary.
CAMP CURTIN TO BM ABANDONED.-ORT military
authorities have determined to abandon Camp
Curtin, and have torn down all the old barracks.
There is nothing remaining now but the hospital
and the Commissary department.
Captains Chritzman and Sands were charged
with selecting a new site, and have fixed upon the
farm of Mr. Rutherford, three miles from this place
on the Reading turnpike. The new site is on roll
ing ground, admirably adapted to the comfort and
health of the soldier. There is upon the premises
a large living spring, and passing through it a
never failing strain' of water. This is an mei
lent movement and in the right direction. The
soldier - will be entirely protected from the bleak
winds of the coming winter, and with abundant
water for bathing and Other purposes, can preserve
his health to a much greater degree than is possi
ble at Camp Curtin. The thanks of the soldier,
and every citizen who has common humanity, is
due to our military authorities for changing this
o*m from its present unhealthy locality, and to
Captains Crhitzman and Sands, for selecting so ad
mirable a site. There is probably no place amid
the surroundings of Harrisburg so well calculated
for the purpose.
Music CLUB.—We have been, told that it is the
intention of some of our young men to start an
amateur arting baba. We are Tory glad te , hefty
it, and sincerely hope they may be successful in
their undertaking. An institution of this kind is
much needed in this city. There area good many
good musicians in town, and if there was that dis
position felt on their part that should be, we would
soon be able to boast of a band equal, fora city of
its size, to any in the State.
The fault is generally in a few, who, after the
band is once organized and going on without diffi
culty, seemingly lose that interest which they
should always endeavor to maintain in it. We
have always noticed a reluctance on the part of
members of bands in this town to attend at the
given timer. When a disposition of this kind
becomes evident in a few of the members, it pro
duces the same feeling among the others. To
keep an institution of this kind up it rests entirely
on the devotion of the members; if they fail in
their duty the band fails ; if the contrary, every
thing goes on as it should_
A GLANCE INTO INFINITUDIL—POOpIe often talk
of millions and billions, but have not the slightest
idea of the import of those words. Let us - illus
trate by our national debt. A friend shows us a
little calculation, which may give some minds an
approximate idea of the vastness of that debt.
Setting our entire present liabilities down at
$2,000,000,000, which is far below Secretary
Chase's own estimates, and suppose a man able to
count 80 per minute during eight working hours
@a9ll day, would require 25,000,000 of minutes to
count the debt; reducing this to years, months and
days, we have 142 years, 8 months and 13 days as
the time spent by the man in the task of counting
our national debt. And by the time the faithful
fellow had completed his task, there would be
enough more greenbacks printed to keep the veri
table "Washington Jew" at work until Doomsday,
in the afternoon.
We might mention in this connection OM NW
Kate Chase, daughter of the Secretary, has re
cently imported a shawl worth $3,000.
HOW TO DETECT COUNTERFEIT Novas.—Counter
felt notes may in almost every initanee be a 0,66-
tea by examining the vignette, or picture in the
middle at the top. See if the sky or background
looks clear and transparent, or soft and even, and
not scratchy. Examine wall the faces ; Goo if the
expression is distinct and easy, natural and life
like—particularly the eyes; see if the drapery or
dress fits well—looks natural and easy. Examine
the medallion ruling and heads and circular orna
ments around the figures, ac. See if they are
regular, smooth and uniform. The work on the
genuine looks as if raised on the paper, and is
very seldcm successfully imitated. Examine the
principal line of letters or name of the bank. See
if they are all upright, perfectly true and even; or,
if sloping, of a uniform slope. Carefully examine
the shading or parallel ruling on the face or out
side of the letters, &c.; see if it is clear or looks as
if colored with a brush. The fine and parallel
lines in the genuine are of large size, smooth and
even.
Puszoxs.—The number of pigeons appear to be
yearly diminishing. There can be no other way
to account for it, except from the rapid increase of
population in our Western States. Not long since
they were so abundant in different periods of the
fall, that our sportsmen set apart days exclusively
for this kind .of game. Every violent storm of
wind, accompanied by a change of weather in the
latter part of August or during September, was
always hailed by sportsmen as a sure indication of
the coming of these birds. These winds are
always deetruetive to piano, Thousands upon
thousands are driven over the western lakes. In
this Way they are se exhausted when they reach
the eastern shores that great numbers are destroyed
by the people without the aid of firearms.
FLOWERS IN WlNTER.—Ladies will read this
with interest. A flower pit should be built by every
family who desire to cultivate flowers. Dig out
three foot in depth, twelve by sit. Wall tip with
plank or bricks, cover with sash. In severe win
ters it will be required to be covered with straw
mats, and the side above the ground with earth or
manure. The tenderest lower may be preserved
in them. The towers must be moderately aired
and watered at mid-day.
