THE GOLD PRODUCT OF THE WORLD.
The Bankers' Magazine for July contains a
summary view of the product of gold and sil
ver in all the countries of the earth at this
thee, compared with the years of 1846-47, be
fore California gold was made known. The
general results of the investigation are as fol
lows
From trustworthy data it appears that the
production of gold and silver throughout the
world has quadrupled since the first discovery
of gold in California, (1848-49.) The produc
tion annually, in the years 1846-8, wee cod
mated at 861.000,000, of which Russia and
Malso were the principal sources. Now the
product is estimated at over $270,100,000 ; the
amount produced in each country in the differ
ent periods being estimated as follows:

The editor adds :
The large accumulation of gold of the last
fourteen years, inure largely to the benefits of
the United States and Great Britain, by giving
an impulse to commerce and to manufactures.
Remote nations are indifferently benefited,
because the course of trade is such that gold
will Sow to those countries where labor is
cheapest, and where the bullion and coin are
the most valued, or realize the largest results.
This is fully demonstrated in the fact, that
notwithstanding the additional accumulations
of the precious metals within the past fourteen
yams, amounting to 'tieet. enfthonsand millions
of dollars, there is really but little more on
hand in the United States and in Western En
rape then in 1850-1853. In the year 1851,
the Bank of France held four hundred and
thirty-six biilliene of francs in silver, and
eighty-two millions in gold ; whereas now,
after a period of twelve years, it holds three
hundred and ninety-four millions of both
metals.
In the year 1852 the Bank of England held
£22,000,000 in bullion and coin, which was,
in fact ,for the country at large—the joint
stock b anks, country banks and private bank
ers maintaining but small specie reserves.
This year the bullion and coin of the Bank of
England ranges from 141 to 15 millions stet
ling, and the Scotch and Irish banks £4,270,000,
from which we deduce the following compara
tive table:
Year 1852- Year 1863.
Bank of By/gland V 10,000,000 875 000,000
Bast et" Prams 3.13 000.000 80,000 000
Banks in tile United States.. 84,000.000 318,00%000

"The Copperheads are opposed to enlisting
or reinforcing the army for fear that the war
will be brought to a close, and the soldiers
come home to vote."—Rtioubbican paper.
Ah, indeed ? And pray why don't the Abo
litionists go to the war when they are drafted,
if they are in favor of "re-inforcing the army?"
Of the hundred or so Abolitionists drafted in
this county, we have not heard that one is go
ing to shoulder the musket. Those who are
too poor to plank down $BOO have that amount
furnished them out of the corruption fund that
is on hand for that purpose. The fact is, the
tory Abolitionists "are opposed to enlisting or
re-inforcing the army for fear the war will be
brought IQ e close " and their opportunities to
steal the money Of the people will be at an
end. The Abolitionists would not close the
war to-morrow if they could. So long as there
is a slave or a dollar to steal, they will oppose
anyinzn r. like peace. This is well understood
h h nnest, discriminating men.—Ootliao
Vol
'Veer.
Tax WROLI STORY.—The following, from the
Easton Argue, campTiM the whole matter in a
nut shell. We are• willing to go before the
people in the next Gubernatorial election with
nothing else than a fair comparison of the can
didates. Every man in the State knows that
Judge Woodward is One of the purest men in
it—while enough of Curtin is known during
the past three years to engulph any man or
party in infamy
George W. Woodward is as far above An
drew Curtin in all that makes a man good and
great, is the sun is above a coal-oil lamp in
brilliancy. Woodward is honest, Curtin is
corrupt. His own party papers tell us this.
Woodward is a high-minded statesman, Curtin
is a low-bred, clap-trap demagogue. Wood
ward's reputation for Integrity is eboso suspi
cion and above attack, Curtin has been sur
rounded by a pack of unprincipled thieves
ever since he has been in Harrisburg. To
olsot Ju.dgo Woodward our Governor will be to
return to the days of Simon Snyttar and Fran
cis R. Shank.
A gentleman was once arguing witka Scotch
lady, when at length be etoppEl. "I tell you
what, ma'am," said he, +•I'll not argue with
you any longer you're not open to cowrie
-ties." •Not open. to conviction, sir!" was
the indignant reply, "I acorn the imputation,
sir; I am open to conviction_ "But," she
added, after a moment's pause, "show me the
man that can convince me."
