Ger THEIR llowET.—The 35th regiment Penn sylvania militia, Colenel M 'Kane, were paid off by Major M'Corniiok on Friday and loft for boon the same evening. They were emergency men. "BATMEN Wmunal."—Yesterday was another scorcher, the mercury touching ninety-five de grees in the shade. It is to be hoped that the draft to-day will have a cooling effect. THE Turarr-Srarm—The 86th regimett P. V. Col. H.C. Alleman, reached this city fiom Get tysburg on Saturday afternoon, and are now wait ing at Caiiip Curtin to be mustered out. The regi ment has of late been on provost guard duty in and around Gettysburg, and . returns to camp about eight hundred strong-. Both umcere and men made a fine appearance as they paraded through our streets. Tim Duerr.—The Provost Marshal begins the process of drafting the quota of this district at o'clock this morning. The proceedings will take place at the Court House, and will be public. There is a platform or scaffold erected in the_ open air in front of the building, which we understand will bo used for the occasion. Some persons con tend that this is the original Chicago platform, while others . believe it to be an amendment. At all events, it is advisable for able-bodied men to "stand from under," for that platform means " biz." PAVIIM BIM THE Anmms—The vast amount of money required for the payment of our armies is illustrated by the figures below. The Paymaster General has distributed funds for the May and Jane payments, as follows : Rosecrans' army, $4,7411,090 (hat% ,000,000; Burnside's, $2,000,- 000; Banke,-$2,500,000 ; Gilmore's, $1,250,000; Poster's, $1,000,000; Schofield's, $1,000,000; Pope's, $750,000, Meade's $6,500,000; to the office of paymasters in New York and New Eng land, including the mustered out troops, $5,500,- 000; payments in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, &o including mustered out troops, $1,750,000; West Virginia and Pennsylvania, $750,000. Total $32,750,000. - AxeLimn .harT.—the pious Hessian of the Telegraph occupied himself during the President's Sunday in writing a scurrilous and contemptible attack upon the Mayor and Council of this city. The President's proclamation had been published in all the papers throughout the land, and the day set apart for thanksgiving and prayer was well known. by every one, and it would have been an act of supererogation on the part of the Mayor to issue any proclamation upon the subject. He might as well be expected to issue one every Sun day morning to let the people know when the Sabbath day arrives. We deem it quite possible that in the ease of the Deacon it might be well to remind him of his duty frequently, lest his easily besetting sin of :varies might land him into keeping his employ ees at work on that day (as he did on Thanksgiv ing, notwithstanding his painfully pious, hypoeriti carJeremiad over the sinfulness of our municipal authorities); but as far as the general community is concerned, there is no such necessity. The Mayor and Council bare performed their duties too well in this city to need any vindication at our hands; Secure in the confidence of the people, they can afford to let the Hessian dog bark—he dare not Lite. A PROPER Ranuxa.—On Friday last we noticed a crowd collected at the corner of one of our streets, and upon drawing near to ascertain the cause, we found a military gentleman who had belonged to one of the nine mOtithe regiments just mustered out, holding forth to the surrounding crowd. He said be had always been a Democrat ; that if any one bad told him a few weeks since Abet be would' ever vote anything bat a Democratic ticket he should have resented it as an insult, but that now since Andrew G_ Cartin had been nominated be felt hound to thtow off his party allegiance and give him a hearty support, and proceeded to give his reasons at length, exhorting his hearers to follow his example. At this time an old gentle man from the orator's county stepped forward and indignantly exelnimed, “Yen a Democrat ! I have known you all your life, and you have always been a blatant Abolitionist. You never voted a Demo cratic ticket, and dare not repeat these falsehoods at home." To this the wordy Curtinite had no re ply to make, but'sneaked away amid the jeers and hisses of the crowd. This fellow must have tak en letkpons from the president of our Loyal Leagu e , who, upon the advent of his election, astounded our community by stating that he had been a Democrat for twenty five years. This patriot entirely misrepresents the slue months' men, three-fourths of whom are true Democrats and Union men, unalterably opposed' to the ruinous policy of the present administration. No doubt he expects some position at the Lands of Oaths, or was paid for him lying out of the funds raised by the Loyal League. Systematic deception and falsehood are the means by which they expect to can, the next election. They forget that pub lic virtue still exiita, , and that the second . sober thought of the people is always right, and inva viably aotreete the mere they Buty, hatte previ ously Wen Gone To PorraviLLE.—Tbe 624 regiment Penn sylvania Militia, Col. William' A. Gray, passed through this place from Chambersburg at noon yesterday, on the way to Pottsville. This move ment probably is made on account of threatened resistance to the draft in that section. Three or four regiments are now stationed in the Schuylkill mining region, which is the only place in the State where the authorities apprehend any trouble in enforcing the conscription. DEATH OP AN OLD SOLDIER.—Oa Saturday, in Bridgeport, died Samuel Himmelright, a soldier of the war of 1812, in the 76th year of his age. The serviving soldiers of the war of 1812 will meet at the bridge this morning at half past eight o'clOik, to make arrangements for attending his funeral from his residence in Cumberland county to the burial place at Shupp's Church. An omnibus will be in readiness at the bridge to convey the soldiers to the residence of the deceased, and thence to the place of burial. THRRIALN EXPLOSION or A LOCONOTIVP. , —We learn from a passenger on the evening train that about 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon the boiler of freight engine No. 264 exploded at Parksburg, forty-four miles th a side of Philadelphia, en the Pennaylvania railroad, with a terrible report.— The fireman, named Watson, was blown almost to atoms, his arms tern from his body and his brains dashed against a tree fifty feet distant. So great was the concussion produced by the explosion, that all the window glass in the town was broken to pieces, and the wood station in the vicinity Wag demolished. No person except the fireman was seriously injured, although the engineer, who wa s standing near by, had his shirt stripped clean from his back. The engine was a new one, and was standing near the station house at the time of the accident. AT CANT CURTIN.—The 167th regiment Penn sylvania (drafted) militia, Col. J. D. Davis, arrived at Camp Curtin on Saturday morning, and expect soon to be mustered out and leave for "Alt Berke " Their active campaign during their nine months' service has given to this fine body of men the look and bearing of true soldiers, and we have no doubt they are all they appear to be. They have of late been with the Army of the Potomac on its long marches from the Rappahannock and desperate fighting in this State, and left that army again lying at its old quarters in the Rappahannock re gion. The 167th numbers about eight hundred men. —Since writing the above we learn that the 167th were sent forward to the camp at Reading, where they will be mustered out of the service. DIAP OF HARRISBORG.—We return our thanks to Mr. Hotber Hage, Civil Engineer, for a new and excellent map of the city of Harrisburg, as laid out urger the direction of the Commissioners for the City Survey in 1860 and 1861. It is one of the most complete and accurate city maps to be found in the country 4 (and the only one of Harris burg,) being drawn to a scale of 400 feet to the bleb, giving the entire plan of the city, chewing the location of the streets not yet opened and the continuation of those partially opened, and hav ing the measurement of all the lots and spares marked down upon them in feet and inches. The names of all the streets and the numbers of the wards are distinctly marked, and all the hotole, banks, churches, schools, seminaries, depots, coun ty and government buildings, Ice., are clearly de signated on the plot. Such a map has long been a desideratum among us, and should find a place in the house of every eitizsn. It adds etill farther to Mr. Ileges already excellent reputation as a draughtsman and engineer. FATAL RAILROAD ACCIDENT.-Mr. Thomas Mat thews, an employee at the government bakery on Chesnut street, was run over and killed at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, at the corner of Third and Mulberry streets, by the Northern Central train from Baltimore. Nothing is known of the circum stances attending the aecident, as he was alone at the time. After the train had palmed, a woman in a house near by beard groans in the street, and caused search to be made, when Matthews was found on the track with one leg cut off and his body otherwise horribly mangled. He was taken to a hospital near by, and lived but an bout or two. No inquest had been held upon the body up to 9 o'clock last night, as the coroner lives at Hummels town and had not arrived—indeed, had not been sent for—up to that time. Mr. Matthews was a young man, and belonged to Philadelphia, where he leaves a wife and two children. His funeral will take place to-day. We improve this opportunity to protest against the reckless speed with which these night trains run over the down grade from the Cumber land side of the river, They dash through Mul berry street at almost full railroad speed, with out engines, with no bells ringing, no large lights shining, and, we understand, without watchmen to warn off the belated and unwary footman. Had the company taken these precautions, Mr. Mat thews would not now be lying dead is the prime of manhood. [Communicated ] MR. EDITOR :—An article purporting to be a corn mnnication, but which probably found its origin in the skull of the proprietor of the Telegraph him self, appeared in the Friday morning edition of that paper, which omtained a gross and most un provoked attack upon the Fairview brass band. The writer declared the band a nuisance, called for its abatement, and pronounced its music to be hor rible, couching his sentiments in low blackguard ism and sorry attempts at facetiousness. The ar ticle concluded by protesting against the music in behalf of sundry "sick females," who suffer greatly from its infliction. Those acquainted with the circumstances of this band and the facts connected with its present organization and past history will deem no explanatory statement er contradiction of this slang to be called for in the premises; but for the information of those ignorant of the state of the case, I will merely offer a fact or two, viz : The Fairview band hoe not been in preetlao one year, and does not, and never did, pretend to any musical excellence. All the members of that band have been in the military service of their country for the nine months past, (a fact which I think could not be eafely predicated of the creature who is slandering them,) and of course could not be expected to play as well as if they had been in practice all that time. The band need make no farther apology to the public for the indifferent character of their music. They certainly will never ask George Bergner's permission to play when and where they please, seeing that they battled for their country in the field while that hypercritical musical soprano was at home bleeding that game country of postage stamps. We have on all occasions cheerfully done our best when called on by the citizens of Harris burg, without money or price, and then were very welcome. We shall not disband, but will still try to improve, despite the delicate sensibilities of Deacon Bergner or any other "sick female." POLIO?, AFFAIBB. — Before Alderman Mine.— Johnny Chilton and Juba Mitchell, two lads of rather tender years, were surprised by officer Pat. Campbell while quarreling on Prtday night. They were placed in the lock-up, brought before the magistrate in the morning, and discharged with a reprimand. In the language pt' the improved version of nursery rhymes : "Juvenile belligerents, you should never let Your angry passions rise; Your youthful hands were never made To tear each other's eyes out—if the court knows herself." George Carney, ablated, who bad been le the lock-up awaiting a bearing for assaulting and bat tering Ann Perry, one of the dark daughters of "Judystown," was committed to prison for trial on Saturday morning. Two dranksD_ Kelly, arrested by officer Camp. ell, and Wm. Avogstine and Pat. M'Ardle, arrested by officer Pat. Campbell—were brought from the lock-up on Saturday morning, and were once more allowed the "freedom of the city." Joeepb Eager, formerly a member of the special police force, was arrected by officer Pat. Campbell on Saturday evening, charged by Barney Campbell with fraudulently obtaining $13.12 from him, by selling him a worthless claim against the city for past eerviees as spoialpolieeman, Committed for trial. Frank Oaks, a soldier just out of the lock-up, was sent to jail on Saturday Aiming for forty eight hours for committing an assault and battery on a Mrs. Billings, living in South street. Arres ted by Pat. Campbell, Robert Fry, constable of the Third ward, was arrested by the same officer, on the same day, charged by Mrs. Matilda Brogan, who lives back of the Reservoir, with entering her lager beer sa loon on the 4... h of July and abstracting therefrom two licenses, one of them a State and the other a United States license. J. D. Hoffman became surety in $lOO for Fry's appearance at court. John Voglestong made complaint against John M'Demott for striking 'him with a mace or billy on the 6th inst. A warrant was issued on Sato% day night for the arrest of the accused. Frank Robinson, a colored boy in the employ of Rudolph Breyer, was prosecuted on Saturday by Frederick Hoehnlen, clerk of the. market, for "'elating the city ordinance by buying MOON before market hours. Case continued until to-day. Mary Little, an old offende'i, was arrested by officer Pat. Campbell on Saturday evening, and lodged in the lock-up over night, whence she was brought before the magistrate yesterday and com mitted to prison as a vagrant for thirty days. She contested every foot of the ground on her way to the lock-up, and her screams rent the air like the shriek of a calliope or the whirr of a 200-pound shall. George Williams, (alias "Toptoe,") William Watkins and Miss Cecilia Gray r arrested for drunkenness by Other 1. Campbell, were dis charged from the lock-up yesterday morning. WHEAT Snow.—The only true mode to obtain wheat suitable to the extremes of our climate is to obtain that certainly acclimated. The importas lions so liberally made by private enterprise and the crude system of the Patent Office have always to ran the great expensive and troublesome risk of acclimation, and not one in a dozen of the varieties ttiga introduced hit. The Patent Office thus dis tributed many bushels, a year cr two ago, of a Maryland white wheat, dubbed "Tappahannock," which was an almost total failure as compared with white wheat grown in the immediate neighborhood of Harrisburg, which before its trial here was well acclimated on the highlands of Centre county, We are therefore very much pleased to call to the notice of our readers that the Monroe County Ag ricultural Society of New York, at Rochester, pro pose to hold a wheat show there on the 8:h, 9ch and 10th days of September next.
