..ETORN OF A NINA MONTHS REGIMENT.—At two
nia Militia, Col. H. C. Alleman, is now on duty in,io'clock yesterday afternoon the 1533 Pennsylvania
and around Gettysburg. Col. Alleman is appoint-1 regiment arrived 'at this place from Hagerstown,
ed commander of the town, and Lieut. Col. llfaclay.. via the Cumberland Valley railroad. This regi
is provost marshal. One of the companies is doing ment is composed of men recruited in Northamp
provost duty in the borough.- ton county last fall, and is under command of Cul.
Glantz. Their term of service expired over two
weeks ago, but, with a commendable patriotism
tnd a nobleness worthy of admiration, they decided
o remain with the Army of the Potomac until the
'anger threatening this State should be averted.
'hey accordingly marched with that army to the
.lp of their native State, and bore a continicuous
rt in the bloody battle of Gettysburg. Their
toned ranks and crippled officers and men tell
be well they acquitted themselves on that mem
oble occasion. The 153 d is truly a fine body of
mi, both in drill and physical development.—
Tlir bronzed features, embrowned by long expo
su. to the elements, and tbelr gallant, bearing as
the followed their tattered banner through our
sties to Camp Curtin, spoke every man of them
Jeer So.—An English writer, in giving Ovine
to a young married woman, argues the &drainage
of keeping a garden and attending to it herself,
and, as a sort of clincher, adds that mother Eve
married a gardener. Quilp truly remarks that the
gardener, in consequence of the match, lost his
situation.
Susserruvas.—A person can produce as a substi
tute an enrolled man, liable to the draft, but it is
at the risk of the latter. The United States does
not allow any man to vacate his place in the en
rollment by reason of the temptation of high boun
ties, or from any other causes. Aliens are a()
most eligible substitutes, because not subject to be
drafted. We notice that the price of substitutes
in some localities ranges above three hundred dol
lars. This is explained by the fact that the pay
ment of $3OO only exempts the person paying it
from the present draft, whereas the furnishing of
a substitute exonerates the drafted man from all
liability to be conscripted during the three years
for which he was drafted.
COPPBRHEAD HEROISIL—The Chambersbnrg
Valley Spirit says that while that ancient borough
was under rebel gale, a rebel soldier applied to 'a
lady for an as to cut down the liberty pole which
had stood in the public square ever since the great
uprising of the people upon the fall of Fort Sump
ter. She refused to give the as. He drew his
pistol from his belt and threatened to shoot her
unless she complied with his demand. She replied
with perfect coolness : `•You can put twenty bullets
through my heart, but you cannot force me to
give you an az to cut down that pole." That
lady, adds the paper, is one of the r7_,st "malignant
copperheads" in town.
SPIKE THAT Guy !—The telegraphic column in
Wednesday evening's Lancaster Inquirer is headed
by a cut of a cannon mounted on- wheels, over
which waves the Stars and Stripes—said cannon
belching out columns of metaphorical smoke in
about equal quantities from the touchhole and
muzzle. This /we de Joie ushers in the "glorious
news" contained in the big headlines below : "Lee
Across the Potomac 1" "His Plunder all Safe !" "A
Riot in Hartford," le. If a "copperhead" journal
had brought oat the big gun in such a connection !
golly, how the hot shot would have rained in upon
it from the adminittration batteries! We advise
our friend Inquirer either to spike his piece or
remove it to the next column and plant it at the
head of the daily list of persona drafted in that
county.
Is A BAD Box —Q-iite a number of persons left
Ghambersbwrg for Hagerstown last week, under
the impression that a battle was about to come off
at the latter place. Most of the party bad the
misfortune to be captured by the Confeds, who
held them as spies and sent them to Richmond
The names of the unfortunate gentlemen, so far as
learned, are, Dr. James Hamilton, Adam Hamil
ton, John P. Culbertson, Allen C. M'Grath, C. W.
Kinsler, L. W. Tritle. Porter Brown, Thomas 11V-
Dowell and George Kauffman. It will prove a
difficult matter for these men to prove themselves
to be anything but spies, especially in the distant
city of Richmond. In view of the late summary
exeutiorts of supposed rebel spies by Gen. Burn
side and others, and the desperate retaliatory
measures sidopted by the rebel authorities, the po
sition of the gentlemen named is uncomfortable,
if not precarious.
POLICE AFFAIRP.—Before Alderman Kline.--
But few cases were before the magistrate yester
day. The number of drunks and disoiderlies qas
far below the average of the past few weeks.
Albert Earl, of New York city, was arrested at
the Gaieties, on Wednesday night, by Officer Camp
bell, for attempting to pass counterfeit money upon
the ticket agent of that institution. He first offer
ed a counterfeit $3 on the Stamford Bank, of
Connecticut, *hi& was refused; then a $5 on
the Hollister Bank, of Buffalo, and a $3 on the
Mechanics' Bank, of Georgetown, D. C, which
were also refused. The officer then arrested him,
and found on his person three other notes on a
Canada bank, whfch preves to be a myth and a
fraud, as no such bank exists., The enterprising
cuss thus engaged in "shoving" the bogus and ir
redeemable was brought befoie Alderman Kline,
who finally "shoved" him into jall.
Bridget Moore, who had spent the night in the
lock-up for drunkenness, was brought out yester
day morning and released from enotody,,, A more

Gas. SCHIMMELPFICAZIIII.—This gallani officer,
who was formerly in commend of a German regi
ment from the western part of this State, and who
is a great favorite with most of the Germans, has,
by acme fatality, been reported killed or missing
in nearly every engagement during the past year.
He was so reported after the late Gettysburg fight,
but it affords us pleasure to abooaaaa that be is
still on his taps and prepared to do further service
to his country. The General esoaped capture
while in Gettysburg by a dodge worthy of the
sharpest Yankee. When he found his retreat cut
off, he seized the coat of a private and buttoned it
closely over his uniform; he was knocked down
and rpn over by a gang of rebels who were after
plunder. He then stumbled away into a cellar,
and lay there concealed and without food for two
days, but when he heard the boys playing "Yan
kee Doodle" in the streets, he thought it safe to
some out. Mt is now in eommand of his brigade
and ready fur work.
The hero of the polysyllabic patrcnym has many
admirers among the Germans in this section. In
deed, we have heard one of them, who can pro
nounce his name with an ease and unction which
fills us with envy, carry his zeal for the General
so far as to say that cite Seeksla un te Plenkera ish
nodding—Schimmelpfennig's te man."
Trounce' is Lanossrza —A gentleman who ar
rived here at eight o'clock last evening informs us
that at ten o'clock yesterday a crowd of women,
•
numl3 i
ring from one to two hundred, mostly for
eigne , entered the Cart lime, where the draft
was i progress. They were armed with knives,
beat spoons and other kitchen implements. The
boy . w o was turning the wheel was rapped over
the he and knuckles, and driven from his post.
When ovost Marshal B3len ins remonstrated with
the int ders, be was somewhat roughly handled
by the aeons, and beat a retreat from the room.
The wilt I was overturned by the women, but no
papers d troyed.
Towart oon the women were joined by large
numbers men, and a general riot seemed immi
nent. Se ral fights occurred, in one of which
officer Ba r was severely beaten. The Mayor
t
read the r t act, and the Sheriff enrolled a posse
of two hu dred men. Order was su ffi ciently
ire
stored by
,riree o'clock to permit the resumption
I 3f the draft at that hour.
Fred. Douglass, the negro orator, was announced
o speak to the colored men of the city at Fulton
fall on Wednesday night, but a large crowd of
iermans and Din outmoded the building early
n the evening, and Frederick did not "come to

Ft, IN MEADOW LIRE.—At three o'clock yes
terdl afternoon a stable in the rear of Shearer's
hotelorner of Third and Mulberry streets, was
discoired to be on fire. The various fire compa
nies *he city were promptly on band, but, owing
to theombustible nature of the building, it wag
past Aimption before a jet of water could be got
on it. 13 it was, the firemen prevented the fur
ther sited of the flames to the buildings in close
proximl. Among those who lent a ready hand
to the Wk were the members of the Philadelphia
police Amoy, many of whom have bad experi

the boys, 6 ocracking her along lively" to the
scene of afire, and when there worked energetic

to Mr. Jag Zeigler, Sr. His loss will not be
large. lifr T hristian Eby, who stabled a horse in

Many meiers.of the 23d and 56th New York

months' aervit were drawn up before Captain
Dodge's mus4g-in office yesterday morning,

AYER'S COMPOUND EXTRACT SARSA
RILLA.—No one remedy is more needed in this country
than a reliab'e Alterative, ) ut the sick have been so out
rageously chested by the worthless preparations of Sar
saparilla abroad that they are disgusted even with the
name. Yet tee dmg cannot be blamed for the imposi
tions from which they have suffered. Moat of the ro
called Sarsaparillan in the market contain little of the
virtues of &owe parilla or anything title They are mere
slope—inert and worthlems, while a concentrated extract
of the active variety of Sarsaparilla compounded with
Dock, Stillingia lodine, etc. is. as it ever will be, a
powerful alterative and an effectual remedy. Such is
Ayer's Fxtract of Sarsaparilla, as its truly wonderful
cures of the great variety of complaints which require
an alterative medicine have abundantly shown. Do not,
therefore, discard this i e Valuable medicine, because yna
