KlLLED.—Daring the thunder storm last even ing, two men at Camp Curtin were struck by light sting and instantly killed. We could not ascertain their names, but were informed that they were from Susquehanna county. 808 EDWARDS GAYETY.—Two grand perform ances will be given to-day at this Temple of Fau— st 24 o'clock and at 8 in the evening—a mammoth bill is up for this occasion. The comic pantoMine called Black Statue will be produced. The whole troupe will appear. Admission 25 cents only. Don't fail to go. Come one, come all. f RICLIGIOUS.—Rev. Mr. Catell, of the Old School Presbyterian Church, will deliver a sermon to the "Cameron Guards" (Captain H. W. Crotzer's com pany) of Lewisburg, Pa., on Sunday morning at 1.1 o'clock, in the hall of the House of Representa tives. Our citizens and soldiers are respectfully invited to be present, Tau Fotrartr.—We believe that no general cele bration of this day will take place in our city. The reasons for this are obvious. The only festivities of which we are informed will be the pio-nie of the Paxton fire oompany, to be given at Haehnlen's woods. The dawn of the day was to be ushered in by Captain F. Asbury Awl's company, with a parade through the streets, and musketry firing by platoons. MILROY'S Weaos Tse►a.—The large wagon train, belonging to General Smith's brigade, First division, Eighth army corps, which was encamped near this place for some time after its retreat from Winchester, arrived in Philadelphia on Wed ie.. day, under charge of Captain E. P. Fitch. The train was on its way to Baltimore, via Lancaster, bat General Schenck ordered it'to report at Phila daiphia, as he deemed it at present inexpedient to allow its farther movement. • MK WALNUT STREET nosPrraL.—Thia hospital, situated on the corner of Walnut street and River alley, is now ready for occupants. It is in charge of Surgeon IL Lennox Hodge, with Mrs. Wiestling as Matron. Its accommodations are excellent.— One hundred beds have been fitted up, and the en tire building in scrupulously clean and well ven tilated. The Primary Female School, on the cor ner just opposite, has also been converted into a hospital, which will, we understand, be , also in aitt.rga of Surgeon Hodge. A Pashas ALMOST ANSWERED.—Yesterday, as two mounted cavalrymen were riding up Third street at break-neck speed, they turned the corner to go down. Walnut, almost riding down a crowd of little children playing there. Officer Campbell, knowing that he couldn't make good enough time to overhaul the merciless and reckless riders, con tented himself with giving expression to a power ful adjective, coupled with the wish that the opal peens might break their necks in turning the next corner. At the same Moment, the riders began to turn down Fourth from Walnut, away went one horse and rider to the ground, and Barney's prayer against the law-breaker Wa3 well nigh answered. The young man was carried almost senseless lute a house near by, and it is hoped that be will come out therefrom a wiser, although a sorer man than when he went in. RE-ARRESTED.-.T. H. M. Weitbrecht, the rebel spy and bogus cavalry captain, whose arrest on Thursday evening by Corporal Hemming and guard we noticed yesterday, was examined by the Pro. vost Marshal and discharged. Be was again ar rested yesterday morning, while in the very act of crossing our lines with a couple of horses. He now awaits a further hearing. Much surprise was ex pressed at his first release by the military authori ties, as the evidence against him was strong and convincing. His last attempt to,pross our lines con firms the auspicious which were entertained of the dubious obaraater of the man. It would be well if private DeHart, the next time this man attempts to run past his beat in a skiff, would bring his famous marksmanship into full requisition, and plump a pill right through the boat and her crew. We know DeH, could bring down the game if it was twioe as big. Poraes AFFA/ 11 43.—Before Atderinan The followin cases were before Aldermaa Kline yesterday : • • Pasquala aointe, an Italian fruiterer, who keeps an establishment on the corner of Market and Fourth streets., was arreste4 by am_ Fry, charged with assault and battery, on oath of Par meta his wife. The assault was a very aggravated one, Pasquale having put both optics of his better half in mourning. The rampageous son of Italia was committed to answer atrcourt. John Hays, drunk and disorderly, was arrested by officer Leib, committed to the lock-up, and, af ter a atiring, was discharged. Benjamin Moore was arrested by officers Ryan and Emanuel, for being drunk and disorderly. He was committed to the look-up, ansi, after a bearing, was discharged from custody. Lawrence Wimp, also drunk and disorderly, was put in the look-up. Ile subsequently bad a hearing before the magistrate and was discharged. Arrested by officer Campbell. John Wagner, living in the South Ward, was arrested by officer Brooks, on a complaint of as sault and battery, preferred against him by his wife, Sarah Wagner. The wife seems to have suf fered much ill-treatment at the hands of the said Jobe. He was committed for trial. Jacob Miller, a soldier who was arrested by of ficer Campbell and lodged in the lock-up for drankanneas, Was released to a superior officer, on the promise that Jacob should be taken to camp immediately. DESERTERS FROM THE RIF.REL ARMY.—Twenty nine rebel deserters were before the Provost Mar shal yesterday morning. These men were mostly from Ewell's division, now in the Cumberland Valley, and gave themselves up at Bloomfield, in Perry county, at York, Carlisle and other points. They were brought here, and will be forwarded to Philadelphia, where the oath of allegienoe will be administered, after which they will be set free. They bail from North Carolina, Georgia and Loui. siana, but the greater part of them were born and raised in the States of Pennsylvania and New York. Among them is also a good sprinkling of Irish blood. From a conversation with one of them, an Irish man, who was al work in Louisiana at the time of the outbreak of hostilities, and who has a brother and sister living in Philadelphia, we learn a few facts of interest. He states that when the fume sion excitement got up to fever heat in Louisiana he volunteered, not because he had any interest in or favor towards the cause, but because he must either do that or be conscripted. Every man had to come up to the rack, fodder or no fodder- There was no reasonable hope of makiug a successful es cape into the distant Federal lines, as the refugee must run a long anti dangerous gauntlet through a wild country, subject to the suspicions of a peo ple frenzied with passion and hate; the best a poor man could do was to put a good face en the matter and make a virtue of necessity by enlisting into the army forthwith. Our informant accordingly cast in his lot with the "Loottieittna Tigers,"a body of men whose fame as fighters is greatly owing to the fact that a large portion of it is made up of Irishmen, who, as every one knows, have perhaps a larger share in fighting the battles of this world than any other people. After passing through many engage ments, he was placed in Stonewall Jackson's com mand, which lately occupied York under General Ewell. At the latter_ place he deserted from a service in which he had no heart, and made the best of his way to the Susquehanna, over which he was ferried by a young lady and her father. He found kind friends along his route, ready to help him on. At the first opportunity he gave himself up to our forces, and was. sent to this The story of the other men in the squad was sub stantially the same. They said that, while on the south side of the Potomac, it was"almost impossi ble to desert. The discipline was very strict and severe, and the extreme penalty of death was gen erally enforced against deserters. The risk of be ing caught was so great as to prevent many at tempts, as the entire Southern people were united and alert. The very women would arrest strag gling men, or cause them to be arrested, if sus pected of bad faith toward the triuse. But after the enemy crossed the Pennsylvania line, and the unwilling conscripts found themse Iv. a in the midst of friends, hundreds and hundreds of them broke for the bushes and escaped, despite the double guard that the rebel commander had thrown around his camp. They say that the mountains on the line of the rebel march in this State are full of such deserters, who dare not break cover because of the great number of mounted rebel scouts that scour the country in all directions.— These deserters are working their way toward the towns and villages, and will all report themselves "when the sign is right." Most of those with whom we talked say that, as the war progresses, the South becomes mike and more embittered, and that Unionism is pretty much "played out." They say they have not suf fered for lack of food or clothing; that their clothes, though coarse, feel better than they look. The whole Confederacy has been much straitened for want of salt, but the stock on hand is equally dis tributed, rations being served out to farmers and citizens as well as to soldiers. As to the whilom popular project of starving out the rebellion, they laugh at the idea, as cotton and tobacco no longer wave on the•..plantations, the whole Southern country being converted into a grain field. They all say that they do not think the rebels have serious designs on this place. The under standing was that they should make a paying trip up the Cumberland Valley, at the same time draw ing Hooker after them, and thus uncovering Wash ington and Baltimore. Of our defences here they have the fullest description, together with the number of men at thie point and the various ford ings above and below. (Communicated.] FLAG FEBSITITAT/PG AND RAISiGG AT CAMP Fortsran.—ln addition to the beautiful and costly flag presented to the First City Guard by the la dies of Harrisburg, the company was the recipient of another starry emblem, presented by Mr. Daniel Epply. Lieutenant Hummel presented it in a neat and appropriate speech, which was responded to by Mr. C. J. Jester, in behalf of the company, who, together with J. B. Cox and S. ithinehart, was ap pointed a committee to superintend the ceremony. A flag pole 50 feet in length was immediately se cured, and the Stars and Stripes now float proudly over the camp. As the flag ascended, the "Star Spangled Banner" was sung by a glee club impro vised for the occasion, consisting of the young men of the (tamp and a eoterie of ladies—refugees from their homes, but whose patriotism remains undamped by the cruel terrors of war. When it reached the top, the band played "Hail Colum bia.' A pause ensued, when a simultaneous-cheer ing ascended from a hundred throats at the soul inspiring scene. Mr. Herman Alricke was called upon for a speech, to which he responded by giving an eloquent history of our national banner, qua• ting from Webster the words that no star shall ever be dimmed nor bar erased. Messrs. Ewing, Snodgrass and Lieut. DeWitt were severally called for, and each made some eloquent remarks. The ceremonies were very. interesting throughout, and relieved greatly the tedium of camp life. The company cannot but be very grateful to the name. roes of liarrieburg who take such an in terest in the welfare of its members. Among its special might be mentioned George Bell, Allen Hamilton, Chas. Tunis, John Hata, Eby it Kun kel, Henry Kelker, Jacob Bomberger, and others, who, together with our estimable Quartermaster, Sheriff . Boas, make our residence here muck mere comfortable than might be expected.
