WHERE TEE GOLD Is?—What has become of the gold coin? asks everybody. The late . advance of the. rebels into this State has thrown some light on the mystery. When the "butternuts" were sup posed to be moving on Pitteburg, the bankers of that city thought it prudent to remove their coin, and the American EtpreSS company delivered to Cleveland, on the 15th inst.,sls, ooo, ooo' in gold, and on the succeeding day $7,000,000 more, of which $650,000 was also in gold. There is as much gold in the country as ever, but it has fled into strong boxes like a frightened animal takes to its hole, and nothing but gunpowder can snake it out: DOESN'T MENTION IT. ---The Gettpreburg ter of Monday, before as, makes no mention of a rebel raid into that town, the occurrence of which was telegraphed a few daya ago all over the etittn. try. Large contributions of cheese are being made for bie relief. The enthusiasm fur the cheese fund is immense. FORT Coron.—The fortifications bearing this name, on Hummel's heights, opposite this place, are nearly complete. The works are very strong. A large number of workmen are still employed in the ditches in front of the escarpment, and others are at work on the hill still farther beyond. The beautiful grove which crowned the crest of Hum mel's hill has all disappeared and been wrought into defensive works, and not a stalk of the waving wheat or elover now holds up its head; all is beaten down into the ground by the tramp of soldiery and the coming and going of horses and wagons. The view from the breastworks of Fort Couch is beau tiful and magnificent. It commands the Cumber land valley, and the eye of the beholder takes in the majestic sweep of the Suiquehanna for miles above and below, with the dark groves, the green fields and smiting meadows on either side, while beneath him lies she bustling State Capital. It is a scene of peace, such as the painter would love to paint. Yet in the background the .whitetents of . the warrior, and upon the mountain stands the genius of War, brooding doer the` . scene,.
