derate size, with a bore of about eight inches—the
one weighing 8,475 pounds, the other 8,425 pounds.
They will be put in position upon the defences of

POLICE Arreins.—Before Alderman Kline.—
Helena Johnson, keeping a best saloon on State
street, was arrested yesterday by officer Kline, and
held to answer for selling lager beer to minors.—
She entered bail in $2OO for her appearance at
court.
John Kelly, committed on Wednesday for assault
and disorderly conduct, on oath of John Messner,
entered bail in the sum of $3OO yesterday, and was
released from custody.
Officer Brooks yesterday arrested an Irishman
named William Murphy, for drunkenness and dis
orderly conduct, at Herr's Hotel. Committed for
twenty-four hours.
A Moen Them—Some despicable "Arab" made
a raid into the premises of Mr. Wesley Reese,
Fifth street, above Market, and tried to enter his
house through the cellar, using a hatchet to force
open the door. Failing in this, the thief sr thieves
laid predatory hands cm a canary cage hanging on
the outside of the house, and spirited away the in
nocent little warbler. The future path of that
man ought to swarm with buzzards and screech
owls, and "the ravens of the valley and the young
eagles" should retaliate upon his eyes, until he
brings the bird back to her bower; Mr. Reese has
twice before been disturbed by parties belonging
to the ilKnights of the centre-bit." Let them re.
member that . the rod of justice don't always lie in
pickle, bat is once in a while taken out for use.
31 - 11 ST BB "1100 D FOB ALL THEY Avvrarrisn."—
Ccamnissioner Lewis has decided that medicine
manufacturers must be held by their advertise
ments—that is, that those who claim that their
medicines have peculiar properties, for the purpose
of taaking them sell well, cannot excuse themselves
from taxes on the ground that they are only ordi
nary drugs of the pharmacopia, as some quacks
seek to do. This is right. The sale of patent
panaceas in this country is immense, and must
yield a fabulous percentage to many of their pro
prietors. in all our large cities may be found
brown atone-fronted palaces built out of sarsapa
rilla, and private pleasure grounds purchased with
the profits of sugar-coated pills and "prickly po
rota plasters." Let the tax commissioners scotch
the wheels of this Juggernaut of humbuggery
which is rolling over the land, crushing the wallets
of over-confiding people as flat as flounders, and
mocking their hopes of health.
Tau Eattommuicr.—Active preparations are be•
log made by the proper officers to enroll the militia
of this district. In a few days the machine will
he fairly is motion. The matter of registering
names is merely preliminary, and no one need
trouble himself about his claim to exemption until
he receives a printed notice that he has been
drafted. He then has the privilege of appearing
before the Board of Enrollment during ten days
after the reception of the notice, and presenting
the grounds upon which he claims exemption.—
This will relieve the minds of many who may be
considering the validity of their right to exemp
tion. All citizens drafted will be heard, and their
cases carefully considered, as the law provides
that none but able-bodied citizens of a certain age,
legally as well as physically qualified, can be ta
ken. After the person has been drafted and found
qualified, the citizens who prefer peace to war may
be exempted from service in the field by paying
$3OO to the government in lieu of service, which
money will go towards constituting a bounty fund
for these who voluntarily join the army.
TEE WEATHED.—We bard kept mum on this
mighty theme until longer silence begins to be in
tolerable. There is so little said in reference to it
that we really begin to have a suspicion that
all information upon the subject is deemed
contraband by the powers that be. We would
venture to remark, however, that we are, as a
general thing, in the enjoyment of weather. Also,
that the air of yesterday end the day before was
what might be called fresh and pleasant, if one
were to speak plainly and the censorship of the
press were non-extant. Also, and finally—and
this we say boldly, even if it be at the risk of a
foot-race with the long-legged "Government" from
s r lagfleld—that the drenching rain which fell at
the first of the week was distributed in a very par
tial manner over this section, some localities but a
fury miles from town not getting "ary drop." And
while in this connection we would give a new
theory in regard to the cause of the sudden cool
snaps which characterise this climate. A rebel
paper, ignoring our perspicuous iceberg theory,
attributes these late changes to the "coolness
of the Yankee cavalry in presuming to invade so
deeply into the soil of Dixie." We are now die
posa to account for tbe recent coolish temperature
in this "neck of woods" on the hypothesis of
heavy rains up in the mountains, produced by the
Telegraph's late terrible fire at Johnstown.
STRAWBERRIES.—The strawberry carnival has
fairly begun. They were to be seen on sale at the
huckster stands in plentiful quantities yesterday,
at the humming price of a dollar a quart Most
of them were brought from Baltimore- We took
out our bundle of postage stamps and made a fine
calculation, but couldn't bring the berries within
range of our pecuniary influences, and so we stood
"forneust" the tempting fruit with watery mouth
and moist eye, and looked long and fondly at it,
and gazed—
" How long we gaze, despite of pain,
And know, but dare not own, we gaze in yain. ,,
At length we slowly retired from the scene, feel
ing that our strawberry time was not yet come.
The first run of these, like the first ran of shad and
other delicacies, is pretty ranch for the use and
belied of eontraetors and others laboring under a
plethora of money. They are contractor berries.
They will cheapen and sweeten as the days grow
longer, and 'by 'and bye wilt make their way
even through narrow alleys into one-story houses.
The strawberry is defined by botanists as "a
plant of the genus fragaria, ear—not hard to
take. We forget the conclusion of the definition,
but are willing to stake our reputation as to the
truthfulness of that which we have supplied. It
abounds in market gardens, and also grows wild
in spots, generally in somebody else's ground than
your own. We found, when very small, that roll
ing over a wild strawberry patch in tow clothes
had a tendency to impart a piebald and strawberry
patqhed appearance to the outer man. It is a sure
way, however, of taking an impression of the patch
and finding out whore all the berries are hid.—
Cream and strawberries are insepereble, and it is
a wise arrangement that cow cattle and strawber
ries go, in a manner, band in band, the one being
found where the other exists. Most people are
fond of strawberries—that is, as Crockett would
say, "there's a lees number is that isn't than isn't
that is."
A BOLD Bonutanv.—Early on Wednesday eve
ning the house of Rev. Mr. Cattell, on Front et.,
was forcibly entered by one or more persons, and
articles taken therefrom, the number and value of
which has not been ascertained. Mr. Cattell is ab*
sent at Peoria, 111., attending the meeting of the
General Assembly of the Old School Presbyterian
Church, and the house was unoccupied at the time
the depredations were committed. A man who
was getting swill in the back yard of the house
discovered in the barrel a fine suit of broadcloth
clothes, with which he started for the house, but,
finding the doors locked and the cellar doer open,
his suspicions were aroused. He notifizd the
neighbors, and a subsequent examination of the
premises by them, with one of whom the key had
been left, established the fact of the robbery. The
door opening from the cellar to the inside bad a
hole knocked through the wood-work, through
which the thief had thrust his hand and drawn the
bolt. Vigilant efforts were made by the pollee to
secure the offenders, but up to this time no arrest
has been made. Had:the affair been in their hands
from the time the discovery was first made, the re
sult would probably have been different. No bold
er or more impudent offense of this kind has been
known here for same time. For a successful ope
ration of this nature, there is nothing better than
sublime Impudence and reckless audacity.
A HORS& TURNS A BACK SOMERSAULT.—Mr.
Charles Buehler, dealer in bottled ale and porter,
had occasion to take a fall one-horse load of it to
Middletown yesterday. Just as he had got across
the Chestnut street canal bridge, a locomotive
came thundering along the tral of the Lebanon
Valley road, immediately in front, at sight Of
which the horse began to "advance backward'
with fright, The embankment, which nearly
spans the space between the bridge and the track,
is quite narrow, and in a moment the wagon was
backed over it, acquiring such a - momentum in its
downfall as to sling his horseship sheer over the
entire concern and land him in the "tempestuous
eanawlrfrom whence he was afterwards extricated,
considerably hurt and about half drowned. The
hind end of the wagon brought up against a snut
bing post at tii, foot of the embankment, breaking
the bottles and scattering showers of ale and porter
all over that section of country. The driver was
not injured. This feat of " Zampilaerkoestat!on "
beats all the horse-tumbling we have heard of.
We'll bet a peck of oats with that horse that he
can't do it again.
NORTHERN CENTRAL RAILWAY.—This road, since
it has come under the control principally of Penn
sylvania interests, is rapidly inproving in Officietey
and usefulness. The amount of transportation
over it at this time is immense, and constantly in
creasing. It;is now the great central thoroughfare
from Washington and. Baltimore to the North and
great Northwest, and its connections are constantly
extending and penetrating farther and farther.—
By a recent arrangement, control has been prc
cured of the whole line. to Elmira, N. Y., thus
placing both Philadelphia and Baltimore in direct
communication with that point, aad there will be
no detention of frieght or passengers direct through
to Buffalo, the Suspension Bridge, the Falls of N;-
agara, itc. In less than a year from this time the
Salsbury and Erie road will be completed, connect
ing with the Northern Central at Williamsport,
and making a much shorter connection with Chi
cago and the whole West, by way of Erie.

Although not dispow.a to favor or recommend Pat
ent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingre
dients and effects, 1 yet know of no sufficient reasons
why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes
himself to have received iron any simple preparation,
in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit
of others.
I do this more readily in regard to tqloofland's Germaa
Bitters," prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city,
because I was prejudiced against them for years, node•
the impression that they were oniony an alcoholic mi -
ture. lam indebted to my friend, Robert Shoemaker ,
Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper test',
and for encouragement to try them when suffering from
great and long continued debility. The use of thr, e
bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the preeez
year, was followed by evident relief and restoration to a
degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had net fe t
for six months before, and had almoet despaired of re.
gaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for di
recting me to the nee of them
