VERY SUDDEN DEATR.—Mr. John Mitchell, re siding on Second street, died suddenly of hemor ',huge of the lungs about half past ten o'clock on Tuesday night. Ho has of late been in the employ of Messrs. He was on the street, apparently in high health, exchanging greetings with his acquaintances, but an hear heNre the hand of death was laid upon him. Th 3 announcement of his death was unex pected, and it seemed to his friends a fact incredi ble thlt in one short hour be should have gone from the light and life of earthly existence to the pale realms of the dead. Mr. Mitchell was about forty-five years of age, is well spoken of by his numerous acquaintances, and leaves a wife and children to mourn the lose of a husband and fa ther. Fran ie Warty Brazsr.- , The residence of Mr. Joseph Newman, Walnut street, below Fourth, was discovered to be on fire about 10 o'clock yesterday mor ning. The alarm was immediately rung, and the varlet:its companies were promptly on the ground and soon put a damper on the further ram page of the flamer. The Citizen company was the first to play upon it, and made a finish of it in double-quick time. The fire was in the second story of the rear of the building, between the weather boarding and chimney, and seems to have originated from a defect in the latter. li e d i t gained much headway, it would in all probability have communicated to the houses adjoining, the one being the residence of Mr. Bomgardner and the other the saloon of Mr. Biester. But the prompt action of the firemen averted much a dis aster, and, as affairs now stand, seventy-five dol bre will probably cover the lees. POLICE AFFAIRS.—Before Alderman -Kline.— About one o'clock yesterday morning officer Camp bell arrested Mary Casey, known as "Irish Mary." for street-ranning and vagrancy. Mary has been more or less without a "local habitation add a name" during a good part of her natural life, and has divided her days pretty equally between the inside and the outside of public 'fastnesses. She had one more hearing yesterday, and "maun lie in prison strang" for the next thirty days. An Irishman named dames Devine, who bad been prowling around the depot for several nights past, apparently on the look out for prey, was ar rested by officer Deeters early yesterday morning for stealing a knapsack, haversack, blanket and other articles of clothing from a disharged soldier named Thomas Roach. The latter was quite drunk at the time of the loss, and had been sleep ing with his luggage under his head. Officer Deems observing this, and having reason to sus peet the designs of the feline', kept a sharp eye out and made frequent reconnoisances in the neighborhood of the sleeper, on one of which he found the man's baggage missing and his pookets rifled of their contents, some thirty.five dollars. Ile soon got on the track of Devine, and before long mime upon him behind a board pile on the other side of the canal, leisurely undoing the bun dle of clothing and re-packing it. Upon being arrested, he made a vigorous resistance, bat was finally reduced to subjection and brought into the aldermanic presence, and was committed to prison to await a hearing, which will take place as soon as Roach recovers from the effects of his intoxica tion and can collect his thoughts and state the facts in an understandable manner. No money was found on Devine's person, and it is thought that the money lost by . Roach was taken by some other person. Yesterday afternoon a man answering to the name of apateh Fred" was arrested by officer Campbell ori Walnut street, for disorderly conduct and drunkenness. Sent up for twenty-four hours. "Fred" had over $2OO worth of "spona" on hie person. John Sickles, alias "Gunboat," one more drunk and disorderly, was brought before The aldermen, and sent to the tombs for forty-eight hours. Ar rested by officer Brooks, on the corner of Fourth and Market. Tax 'Leona TAX.—The Cominissioner of Inter nal Revenue has decided that the profits of a man ufacturer from his business are not exempt from the income tax in consequence of his having paid the excise tax upon articles manufactured by him. A merchant's return of income should cover the business of the year 1862, inoluding previous years. Uncuttested aocerinte must be estimated. Old debts considered hopeless, if paid within the time covered by the return of income, must be included in the tax. Debts considered lest at the end of the year 1882, due to the business of the year, may be deducted. Interest is considered income only when paid, unlesi it is collectable, sad re. mains unpaid by consent of parties. Income de rived from coal mines mast be returnable, tbongh the tart has not been paid in coal produced. Con tingent funds of manufacturing corporations made up during 1862, and not distributed, should not be returned as income of stockholders. Undistributed earnings of a corporation made previous to Sep tember 1662, are not considered income of the stockholders. Every member of a limited part nership, making no dividend or division of profits until the expiration of the partnership, must re turn his share of the profits arising from the bust. ness in 1862, as if the division of profits had been made. rirMS as such will not make returns Charitable, literary and adientific institutions are wholly exempted from the income tax. These de cisions are highly important in their character, and will, as far as they go, assist each individual in making out his return properly, though there are numbers of questions yet arising under the law, which require early official interpretation and announcement. Carr. Enwe.iti, De. Rctr.—This gentleman has returned from his last obligation to the Govern ernment, and will spend the next summer months here. lie is reedy to form a class for gentlemen in the art of self defence with all kinds of arms —small and broad sword and bayonet exercises, far yonthe ealiathenies and fencing- The Times says of Captain Da Ron : Capt. De Ron, who has in this city a school in fencing, is undoubtedly one of the most accent• plished swordsmen in America. He has had a long experience in the practice of this art, and his sys tem comprises the beat improvements and moat approved methods known to the masters of the art in Europe. As a teacher he is excellent. One of our citizens, who has been well taught in fencing under the old rules, informs us that the Captain's system le qiiite a different thing. equal in all respects, and in some a vast improvement on the old. Capt. De Reis, a Hungarian, has fought in many battles in Italy and bis own country, before coming to America, where he has been for many years connected with West Point, and other mili tary schools, becoming intimately acquainted with some of the. most eminent military men in the country. The art that be teaches is one that is likely to be of great practical utility to every man, in these times, and it should be diligently acquired by all young men especially. Eve/Cala a beneficial exercise, it is superior to a gymnasium. He can be seen at the State Capitol Hotel. BARCLAY'S PASORAMA.-A very large and highly interested audience were present at Brant's Hall last night, to witness the exhibition of Barelay's panorama of Jerusalem and Periscope of the Holy Land. As many far abler critics than ourselves have passed favorable judgment upon it, we prefer to leave them to speak in reference to its merits. Bayard Taylor says : "It gives the most satisfac tory idea of Jerusalem which can be obtained with out visiting the holy City!' Prof. Hackett says ! "It is unquestionably the fullest and most perfect representation of sacred scenes and objects ever presented to the public i n this country." Rev. Dr. Dubin, Dr. Bacon, and many others, all testify in a similar manner as to the merits of the paint ings. It exhibited sixteen weeks in Boston and one month in Philadelphia, and has been visited by thousand of citizens and over one hundred Sab bath schools. While at Syracuse, over forty car loads of excursionists came to see it from neigh boring romp. To-night is its second and posi tively its last appearance in this place. ANQTHER notgerza, GUN Anotherbig gun, de signed for the harbor defences of New York, passed over the Pennsylvania road yesterday morning. It is a 15-inch Columbiad, cast at the Fort Pitt works, and weighs 50,080 pounds. It was so ponderous as to break down the car cn which it was mounted, delaying it some hours here for repairs. Its calibre was of gueb a ciao that a boy of fifteen crawled into it with ease, and it is probable that the concussion of its discharge would shake the earth in as handsome a style as "Jove's artillery" used to rock the rugged sides of Mount Olympus. Its superiority over the latter consists in its being rifled. This gun is somewhat larger than the celebrated "Floyd gun," cast at the same works about two years ago, which weighed 49 949 pounds. New York will soon have arum insist sufficient to thunderetrike the " wooden wale of do combined navies on the other side of the "pond." Ramovar..—The odic. of Capt. R. L Dodge, superintendent of the recruiting Beeville of Penn aylvania, has been removed from Second street to his former quarters on Third street, above Market, adjois log the PATRIOT AND UNION buildings. A CASE OF CONSCIENCIL-A circumstance came to our knowledge yesterday which exhibits in a striking manner the lasting nature and power cf Conscience. Mr. Wm. K. Verbeke, executor of the estate of Joseph Thornton, who died in this city last February, received a note yesterday post marked Boston, enclosing a ten dollar "green. back," accompanied by tb,o following note :The enclosed ten dollars belong to the estate of Joseph Thornton." No name was signed. In a world lying in wickedness and abounding in rascality and heartless deceit, an act of repentance such as this is like a cool oasis in the desert of sin, and shows that, however far a man may swerve from the path of uprightness, he is seldom utterly for saken by the "better angels of his nature."
