PATIENTS IN HOSPITAL. AT CAMP CIIRTIN.—We
learn that the patients in hospital at this camp
now number about sixty-five. Most of these are
under treatment for wounds received in the late
engagements on the Rappahannock. Bowel com
plaints are more prevalent among the sick than
any other form of disease.
• POCKET PICKED.-A soldier belonging to the 76th
Pennsylvania regiment, stationed st Hilton head,
arrived in this city Saturday evening. On coming
out of the Lebanon Valley depot he .found that
his pocket book, containing seventy-five dollars,
had been spirited away by some of the preatidigi
tating fraternity. The thief has not been detected,
and it looks as if the investment was permanent.
Man Doa Kumen.—A dog belonging to Theo.
Fenn, Esq., residing on Walnut street, was seized
with paroxysms . of madness yesterday, and shot
forthwith. Hydrophobia seems to prevail in vari
ous parts of the country. The dog law ought to
be enforced. The life of a single man is worth all
the dog-scalps in the country.
TIARGE RHUBILBB AND ASPARAGUS.—The finest
bunches of pie-plant and asparagus for size and
quality which we have seen this season, were
given to us on Saturday morning by Mr. H. A.
Misb, nursery-man and gardener. Any amount
of the same kind can be bad by those desiring it,
at his stall in the lower market house, any market
morning.
Tun Naws TEM! ON TUC CARS.—The newspa
per business on the railroad trains has got to be
quite an extensive one. On the Pennsylvania
road this enterprise is separated into three di
visions. A Philadelphia agent has , secured the
right to sell papers on that part of the line between
that city and Harrisburg; Mr. Jack, of this city,
has that portion between here and Altoona ; and
a Pittsburg firm has the remainder. On some roads
large sums are paid by the agents for the privilege
of selling. The business must prove remunerative
upon a road enjoying a travel so large as that of
the Pennsylvania.
It:Possum TO Burcrtens.—ln the amended ex
cise late are the following provisions in relation to
the tax to be paid by butchers : Butchers shall
pay ten dollars, for each license. Every person
whose Walesa it is to sell butcher's meat at retail
shall be regarded as a butcher under this act ; and
no butcher having taken out a license and paid
ten dollars therefor, shall be required to take out
a license as retail dealer on account of selling
other articles at the same store, stall or premises.
Butchers who retail butcher's meat exclusively
from a cart or wagon, by themselves or agents,
shall be required to pay fire dollars only, any ex
isting law to the contrary notwithstanding; and
having taken out a license therefor, shall not be
required to take out a license as a pedlar for re
tailing butcher's meat, as aforesaid. No license
shall be required of a butcher whose annual sales
do not exceed a thousand dollars.

bridge not lighted? This is a question which
ought to be solve& The convenience and safety
of the traveling public demand it. Those who
have been in town, and who may be detained to a
late hour, are obliged to grope their way through
the bridge in utter darkness, liable to stumble over
drunken sleepers and to run foul of others coming
front the opposite sid*L The heavy tribute which
the traveling public pay for the use of the bridge,
swelling the dividends of its profitable stock, should
be an all reason to compel its managers
to make an improvement so much needed and so
loudly called for. There is danger in a long, dark,
covered bridge—danger to life, limb and property
—and many a lurking robber has done his work of
darkness in such a place. Let not the traveler be
compelled to run the gauntlet of each dangers
through that which spans the Susquehanna, dodg.

POLICE AFFAIRS—Before Alderman Kline.—A
"dark oomplected" daughter of Ram, who had
taken overmuch of the "vitriol madness," and was
indulging in window-smashing and other innocent
amusements near the depot, was arrested in her •
mad career about 1 o'clock on Saturd ay morn i ng
by effieers Campbell and Brooks. She gave in her
name as Nancy Jane Green—evidently a misnomer,
as black can't be called either green or White With
any show of plausibility. She was sent to the
"donjon 'keep" of the tower on Walnut Street for
ten days. Miss G.'s glass-breaking propensities
are another vindication of the hypothesis once
advanced by a certain "culled pigeon" who, in
answering a question put to him before a jury in
the trial of a similar offence, told lawyer Detweiler
that Moen smash-ups were "the legitimate result
of the iconoclastic disposition of the Ethiopian

On Saturday forenoon information was made by
Jas. Mitchell, before Alderman Kline, that at 3
o'clock that morning John Maxwell stabbed Peter
Gallagher at his own house. Both parties live on
the Poor House road, beyond Paxton bridge.—
Gallagher keeps a boarding-horse, and Maxwell
was seen to enter it about 3 o'clock. Others in the
house saw him go into Gallagher's room, Where he
found Gallagher in hod and stabbed him twice in
the side. He immediately decamped, and up to
ibis time all efforts to secure him have failed.—
Gallagher was very seriously injured, but his
wounds are not supposed to be mortal. No cause
is known for the murderous deed.
Patrick Brogan, living back of the reservoir, was
brought before the magistrate by officer Campbell
on Saturday night, charged with ill-treatment of a
child. Sent to prison for twenty-four hours.
A wretched woman named Sarah Miller was ar
rested on Saturday afternoon by officer Fry, who
found her on the canal bridge at the foot of Chest
nut street. She was strongly under the influence
of liquor. The last spark of decency seemed to
have fled. Sent ten days for drunkenness and in
decent exposure.

PENNSYLVANIA NEWS.
ALLEGEMBY COUNTY. -di fatal accident occurred
at Lowry's Mill, in the Ninth ward, on the 19th
A boy named Thompson was at work among the
machinery, when his clothes caught in the shaft
in some way, and he was whirled around several
times, his head striking the floor and his brains
being scattered in every direction.
A man by the name of J. A. Williamson had his
foot cut off at West Newton on Tuesday,l9th inst.,
by the ears on the Connellaville railroad running
over it. He narrowly escaped death.
Joshua Ward, of New York, has challenged
Hammil, of Pittsburg, the champion smiler of
America, to row a five mile race on the Hudson
river, for $5OO a side. The challenge will no
doubt be accepted.
Gen. S. D. Sturgis, of the Ninth Army Corps,
(Gen. Durnside's,) was in Pittsburg on the 21st,
on a brief visit.
The books of subscription to the Mahoning and
French Creek railroad will be opened at the Oil
Exchange on Saturday, na inst.
The process of enrolling, preparatory to the
draft, commenced on Wednesday last.'
YORK COUNTY.—CoI, George Hay, of the 87th
P. V., has been compelled to resign his command
in consequence of impaired health. tie arived at
his home in York on the 16th inst.
Mr. John Pennel, a revolutionary eoldier, died
at his residence in York on Monday last, in the
99th year of his age. His remains were interred
in the Moravian burial ground, on Wednesday
evening last, with military honors.
Arrangements have been made at York for the
public reception of the 130th regiment, soon to ar
rive from Harrisburg.
Christian Holtzman fell dead at his residence in
York, on the 14th, from a stroke of apoplexy.
LIIZERNE COUNTY.—Several buildings in Ply
mouth were destroyed by fire on Saturday eve
ning at 6 o'clock.
Mr. Stephen N. Bradford has received the ap
pointment of provost marshal of the district. M.
B. Helme, of Montrose, has been appointed com
missioner, and Dr. H. P. Moody, of Franklin
township, surgeon.
The Union says that the Wyoming coal field on
both sides of the river will be open to the seaboard
ere many months elapse, by a continuous line
down the Lehigh.
Aram COUNTY.—TWO children of Mr. Peter
Neiderer, of Bruebtown, were scalded, in the tem
porary absence of Mrs. Niedarer on Sunday mor
ning, by upsetting a cook stove, and one of them
so injured ae to cause its death in a few hours.
WARREN COUNTY.—WIR. F. Dalrymple has been
re-elected County Superintendent.
ALLEGHENY COUNTY.—The Chronicle says that
there are now ten new steamers at the Mononga
hela wharf, and two at the Allegheny wharf. The
latter are rapidly approaching completion, and
will probably be ready for service next week. •
A serious accident Occurred at the Niles rail
road depot on Wednesday morning. Mr. J. Dun
can Ward, of Niles, while attempting to get on the
coal train, while it was under motiun, slipped and
fell between the cars and the platform, and bad
both hie legs so badly crushed below the knees,
that death soon afterwards ensued.

and Northwest counties of Pennsylvania to the any of
Zee, on Lake Erie.
It has been leased by the Pennsylvania Rail Road
Company, and under their auspices is being rapidly
opened throughout its entire length. '
It is now in use for Passenger and Freight business
from Harrisburg to Driftwood, (Sewed Fork,) (177
miles) on the Eastern Division, and from Sheffield to
Erie, (78 miles) on the Western Division.
