ified fur the position, and to poems the ability to
make a good officer.

A Berm Kinnr.n.—As the tip train on the
North Central railroad was crossing Codormi creek
yesterday, a soldier who was standing upon the
top of one of the cars in company with many others.

after. His name was John Jolly, and be belonged
to the Milt New York, (two years' men,) Colonel
John G. Todd, of which regiment the train was
composed. He resided at Theresa, Jefferson
county, New York.
A SUGGESTION IN REGARD TO BATHING We no
ticed yesterday large numbers of youth bathing
at every point along the river shore. NO One can
object to the boys indulging in this healthful
and invigorating recreation, but some respect
attend& ha had for the eiticans residing in that vi
cinity. It would be well if they would select their
bathing places farther from the town. It cannot
be pleaeaut to the families residing en Prost street
to have squads of naked boys performing antics
and ground and lofty tumbling in full view at all
Ware atilt:, day. /t would be a good idea for the
swimmers to resort to the island for the indul
gence of their aquatic tastes. The toll can be but
a slight obstacle, as it amounts to only a penny
for boys of all grades during the summer season.
DON'T loos_—Sportsmen should remember that
there is a law on the statute-books of this State,
forbidding tho shooting of any nightingale, night
hawk, blue bird, oriole, finch, thrush, lark, sparrow,
or any other insectivorous or harmless bird, at any
time, and bob-o-links and robins between the lat
of February and the Ist of October. The penalty
of an infraction of this law is fine and imprison
ment. It is creditable to our Legislature that they
have interfered in behalf of the birds, for of all
created creatures they are the most harmless, use
ful and enlivening. Even the unrefined nations
of the earth are mindful of their claims upon them
for protection. The semi-civilised Japanese, in
their international treaty with this country, stipu
lated that Americans traveling in that land should
not take the life of any bird.

balanced accounts at the depot with a Captain from
Reading, to whose company he belonged. The
soldier, according to his own account, bad been
meanly and unfairly dealt with by his superior offi.
cer while in the service. Re alleged that at the time
three swaths' pay was due him, be was in hospital
and unable to sign the pay roll, and that the Cap
tain had drawn the money and signed for him.
For this money the Captain bad never accounted,
and bad, besides, evij cted Lim to Tarions indig
;titles before and subsequently to this outrage.
The injured man knew that a time was coming
when they would both be mustered out of the LP r
vice and would stand on equal tome, and eo be
patiently bided his time, keeping his own counsel,
and "nursing his wrath to keep it warm.'t A e _

the soldier absolved from the military law width
exacts obedience and deference to the superior in
rank, they met at the depot on the eve cf their
departure homeward. The soldier immediately
took vigorous measures to Cancel the old account,

A FACT THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.—It is credit
able to the character of the many soldiers in our
midst that, during their stay here, the Impale of the
city have been unimportant and the record of
events meagre and dry even to dullness. The
streets', the hotels, the boarding-houses, the places
of amusement, all overflow with men who have
long been restrained by the rigorous discipline of
camp life, and who now suddenly fled those re
straints thrown off; and yet the number of crimes
and disturbances is not augmented nor the peace
of the olezeh interrupted. It is a fact which speaks
for itself. These men, hailing from all parts of the
State, removed from the constraining intinenees of
home, and eaddelly freed from the irksome re
straints of military discipline, do not manifest any
disposition to abuse their neri-found freedom, and
have in very few instances Confounded rational
liberty with irrational license. Such a record re
dounds to the honor of the soldier, and challenges
the admiration of every friend of the great cause
which he has labored to advance in the tented
field. It is a triumph as great as that won in the
face of the enemy. " Penile hath hoe eleteklee so
less than war," and this is of them.

Yesterday morning officers Fry and Brooks ar
rested a man named James Dailey, who was con
ducting in a drunken and disorderly manner. He
made a determined resistance against his captors,
and, was laboring under a partial attack of mania
a . 230111. He was sent to jell for safe keeping.
Officer Campbell arrested a soldier named Jacob
Shimler for committing an aggravated assault upon
an inoffensive German hackman in Market street
yesterday afternoon.. The soldier had refused to
pay his fare from camp, assaulting the driver with
a stone while in his carriage. Ho had already
been before the magistrate for a similar offence
against the same person the day before, but was
dismissed. This time he was mainlined, in default
of bail, to answer the charge. while having bis
hearing be made another attempt to strike the
badman.

REGIMENTAL FLAGS.—Gov. Curtin has granted
permission to the returning regiments to carry
home the flags whisk were presented to them by
the State during the time of their service in the
field. The object of this is to allow the regiments
an opportunity of displaying these ensigns, around
which they have rallied and fought, and of which
they are so justly proud, in the receptions which
await them at home. It is understood that the
flags will afterwards be returned, to be deposited
among the archives of the State, as provided by
the law which directed their presentation.

PENNSYLVANIA NEWS.
ALLEcussy COUNTY —On Saturday evening, 16th
inst., a Mrs. Schenck, living in Second street,
Pittsburg, tripped and fell while going down a
flight of cellar stairs, receiving injuries from which
she died on Monday following. e
A large and spirited Democratic meeting was
held at the village of Bennington on the 26th
instant, which was ably addressed by J. M Clark,
Esq., and Hon. Wm Glenn. The meeting adjourn
ed with a resolution to attend the mass meeting of
the Democracy of Allegheny and Washington
counties, to be held in the village of Candor on the
20th inst.
The imports of petroleum at the port of Pitts
burg on Wednesday reached 5,907 barrels, 815 of
which was relined, and 5,092 crude,
Mr. A. J. WooWeyer, agent for the Pennsylva
nia Central railroad at East Liberty, had aline bay
mare stolen from a hitching post on Beaver street,
leiwreneeviile, on Monday evening.
The Chronicle says that nearly four hundred re
cruits for the colored regiment now being raised in
Massachusetts have already left that city for Bos
ton. A squad of some fifty left last night, and
another squad is expected to leave next week.—
There is no provision made for subsisting or lodg
ing recruits here, else the colored men say they
could raise a full regiment in Pittsburg In two
weeks.
An adjourned meeting of the ministers and
members of different religious denominations was
held recently in the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church at Pittsburg. The object of the meeting
was to take some preliminary steps towards the
amendment of the Constitution so as to give a more
distinct recognition of the being, attributes and
government of Gad.
A suggestion recommending the bolding of a
National Rouging Convention on the 4th day of
July next, for the purpose of considering a pro
posed amendment, was then adopted.
It is said that no less than fifty cases of small
pox have been reported at Girt Y's Run, Allegheny
county, and that the disease is still spreading.
LANCASTER COUNTY.—On last Thursday morning
a man named David Dontrich was found dead in
his room at Adamstown, having strangled himself
by a cord attached to a bed post.
Some years since a lady recovered $lOO from
Andrew Greiner, of West Hempfield township, for
a breach of promise of marriage, but having re
cently joined the church, hor conscientious scru
ple sinduced her to refund the money.
Provost Marshal Bolenins advertises for propo
sals to establish a " Soldiers' Beat" in Lancaster,
where rations will be furnished on demand.
Dr. Peter S. Clinger, of Conestoga township, has
been appointed medical examiner for the Lancaster
district, by the Commissioner of Pensions, vice A.
J. Carpenter, deceased.
Preparations are making for the reception of
the Lancaster members of the ]3sth regiment,
soon to be mustered out at Camp Curtin. Four
companies of the 135th are from Lancaster.
• The 122 d regiment bas been requested by 'Col.
Franklin to assemble in the city on Whit.lidonday,
for regimental drill and parade.
At a meeting of the First National Bank, of
Strasburg, held on Saturday last, the following
officers were , elected, viz ; Fresideur,lohn F. IleTr
birectors, Daniel Herr, (Pequea,)' John 'Strohm,
Dr. John K. Raub, George W. Hensel, Joseph
M'Ciure, John 'Museeltnau, Wm Spencer, A. M.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY.—The Deinocratio Pri
mary elections will be held on Saturday, the 15th
day of June, for the purpose of nominating a ticket
•in accordance with party usages.
A very severe hail storm passed over the north
ern part of Cook township, on Thursday, the 14th
inst. •
William Kooser has been appointed postmaster

About 4 o'clock on Saturday evening, 10th inst.,
a fire broke out in the dwelling house occupied by
Richard Rigney, at New Florence, and although a
number of persons were on the ground in a few
minutes, their exertions were unavailing, and the
building was entirely destroyed.
The through accommodation train on last Fri
day morning, when near George's Station, struck
William Story, inflibting injuries from which he
died in a few hours afterwards. He was acting
as watchman, and stepped upon the wrong track
as the train was approaching. He was about sixty
years of age.
Some difficulty exists among the coal operatives
at Pennstadt, this county. Several officers have
been sent 'out frees PitteborgireF.siselet in prevent
ing an outbreak. Some of the 'Miners are on a
strike, and endeavoring to coerce others who are
satisfied with the present wages.
The dwelling of Mr. Uriah Updegraff, in Fair
field township was totally destroyed by fire on last
Saturday week. The entire contents of the house,
together with three_ htiadred dollars in money,.was
consumed. The leati.,to Mr. Updegraff is heavy,

jIINIATA COUSTY.—On Thursday of last week,
while the coil train going westward was passing
Mexico Station about 9 a. in., a young man by the
name of William Cu'lison attempted to get on
while in motion; but accidently slipped on the
track, the' train passing over him and ornahing
both his legs and otherwise seriously injuring him.
He was brought to the Patterson House where he
lingered until about 4 o'clock p. m, when he ex
pired.
At a meeting of the citizens of MiMintown and
Patterson held at the Court House on Tuesday
evening last, for the purpose of preparing a snita
ble for Captains Wharton and Martin's
companies, it was unanimously agreed that the
citizens of the above boroughs give them a public
supper on their return home.
