THE 128v8 REGIMENT P. V.—We see it reported
in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and republished in
the Telegraph, that the. above regiment, hailing
principally from Berke county, have refused to be
received by what these papers term "copperheads."
We have taken pains to inquire into the matter,
and have learned this—that the reception tendered
to the 128th regiment is of a purely municipal
character—that it is open to the participation of
every citizen—that the regiment is to be received
by the Select and Common Councils of Reading,
and the Mayor, who is to make the only address
to be delivered on the occasion. We also have the
most undoubted authority for saying, that a recep
tion of any other character would be utterly con
bury to the wishes of the officers and soldiers
composing the regiment. Indeed we know that
the regiment would refuse, and have refused, to be
received by any other parties than the city corpo
ration or the tizelse generally. Arrangements
to that effect have been consummated in this city
by Mayor Tiber and Jacob C. Hoff, Esq., Presi
dent of the Select Council of Reading, and the
regiment. The communication lathe Inquirer is
an unqualified falsehood in every particular. No
citizens assembled, except the Union League, to
denounce the appointment of any committee es an
outrage, and the commitees appointed to make ar
rangements, composed of all parties, are acting
harmoniously together, and 013 committee of eiti
tens, save members of the Leyal League, cane
to Harrisburg. There was no meeting of the fire
department to act in conjunction with the League
in this matter, and no banners reflecting upon any
portion of their fellow-citizens will be carried by
the regiment.
The Inquirer'. communication was evidently
gotten up by some malignant spirit, for the pur
pose of raising a disturbance. We deprecate ex
beedingly demonstrations of this kind in our pub,
lie prints. It is humiliating to human nature to
:tank that at a time when loving wives, daughters
sad mothers are with fond affection awaiting the
'etnrn of long absent husbands, brothers and eons
—when all hearts should be united in bidding a
Ltearty, generous welcome to our brave soldiers—
that bad, designing men, are endeavoring to sow
Le fell spirit of sedition, discord and bitter hatred
wileng citizens. These men certainly cannot be
'Awe bow uttely themselves and their vile efforts
