some new and important ordinances recently en

which we invite the attention of our local readers.
ANOTHIM HORSE STOLEN.—The horse thieves
continue to operate with great success in this and
other sections of the country. On Sunday night
a fine black animal was stolen from the stable of
Mr. Michael Boyle, in the Sixth ward of this city.
What direction the thief took is not known.
Joyner - me Poutt.teta.—Two lads named John
Thompson and Joseph Stafford, were arrested for
fighting on Sunday, desecrating the day and dis
gracing themselves. After a hearing before Al
derman 'Kline they were obliged to enter hail for
their future good behavior and to keep the peace.
NEKETDIG OF THE CITY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.-
The City Democratic Executive Committee will
bold its regular monthly meeting at n o'clock on
Wednesday evening, May dth, at Bernhard's hotel,
corner of Walnut and Faurth streets. Punctual
attendance is requested. By order of the Presi
dent. GEO. F. WEavra, Spey.

wing to make arrangements for giving the volun
teers of the 127th regiment a proper reception on
their return home. We have no doubt all our
citizens will participate in arch a demonstration of
welcome to the returning heroes.
BODY EXHUMED.-A man while making fence
sear Oregon, in Laneaater county, ttruok upon
human skull. Further examination dielosed the
body of a man, buried in a
r standing position. It
is supposed to be the remains of a pedlar who
mysteriously disappeared from that locality several
years ago.
Ws see it Stated that among the cargo of the
prize steamer "Princess Royal," lately captured
by our blockading squadron cff Charleston, were
500 gross of Brandreth's Pills, which bad been
bought of Spanish boners in Havana. Jeff. Davis
will have to "give it up" soon, or do without I 2
pills. The South evidently prefers Brandreth's
Lincoln's.
PAROLID PHISONIRS.—About ninety 'Union sol_
diem recently captured by the rebels in Western
Virginia, and paroled, passed through this city
on Sunday night en route for Washington. They
were guarding a bridge when attacked by a supe
rior force, and only yielded after a protracted and
desperate resistance. The rebels robbed them of
all the valuables in their possession.
Focally "Picann.—A delegate to the county
school convention from one of the upper end dis
tricts was relieved of a pocket book while descend
ing the court house stairs yesterday. The fellow
that committed this outrage within the sacred
predate of the temple of justice, must be a daring
thief. The amount lost was trifling, however, and
did not recompense the likattek" for his dangerous
experiment.
AssAram stn BATTERY.--Yesterday afternoon
A. P. Eastlake, a clerk in Major Lyon'a military
office, was before Alderman Kline on a charge of
assault and battery with intent to kill. The com
plaint was made by Sergeant R. W. WConter, who
alleged that defendant struck him on the forehead
with an iron hammer and inflicted other severe
blows. The corporal's head was badly cut. East
lake entered bail for his appearance at court to an
swer the charge. W e k now nothing about the origin
of the difficulty.
AT Howe.—The City ZDnaves returned home
yesterday afternoon from Washington where they
have been doing guard duty since their departure
from this city. They presented a fine soldierly
appearance, and marched with -the accuracy and
precision of military veterans, on the route from
the depot to their old headquarters in Walnut
street. The ZMISATBB expect to be mustered out of
nice and paid off sow time during the present
eek. The term of service of the regiment expires
cut the tenth of this month, but it is uncertain
bat time the balance of the companies will reach
--Ise. Many of the Zonaves express a deternf
notbn to se-enter the service.
GRIMM/ DEMOCRATIC Crux.—Our German friends
said a meeting at Bernhard's hotel last evening,
which was wet, attended: This club is among the
/argon and most effective Democratic orgaciz
kens in the city. Its membership comprises the
great men of our intelligent Clertnen population,
who are in favor of a vigorous proreoution of the
war for the restoration of the Union, but not for
the emancipation and social elevation of the South
ern migrate. They are for keeping e this a white
sum's Country, and encouraging and protecting
free white labor, and will work and vote for sues
a eonannumation. The Germans of this city will
make a good record fot themselves on the second
-neada,y of October next.
DISGRACEFUL NEGRO Row—An Officer Violently
Aseaulted.—Yesterday afternoon a row occurred
among some negroes in Beecher's avenue during
the progress of an election for officers and mana
gers of their cemetery. Officer Campbell, who was
present by request to preserve order, undertook
to arrest the most prominent participant in the
disturbance, a fellow named Basil Moore, when the
dusky rowdy violently assaulted him, kicked and
knocked him down several times, flourished a ra
zor with which he threatened to cut the officer's
heart out, and indulged in other violent demon
strations, in which he was aided, and abetted by
another stalwart and disorderly negro named Mil
ler. At one time fears were entertained that
Barney would receive very serious, if not fatal,
injury at the hands of the intoxicated and infuria
ted negroes. Finally, however, with the assist
ance of some white men, the rioters were captured
and taken before Alderman Kline, who committed
them for trial. We have never witnessed a more
violent or outrageous resistance of a civil officer in
this community than was made by Moore, who is
a desperate and dangerous Oiarsoter. The fellow
who encouraged and assisted him behaved with no
less violence, and deserves the same measure of
punishment.
After the above arrests were made the rioting
continued until the close of the election, and offi
cer Campbell was obliged to summon i a posse to
preserve order among the excited derides, num
bering two hundred or more. Threats and hostile
demonstrations were made against him, but his
firmness and courage were equal to the occasion,
and he managed to keep the riotously disposed in
subjection. The whole affair was disgraceful and
lawless in the extreme, and showed the import
ance of having a large and thoroughly organised
police force in our city.
COUNTY SCHOOL CONVENTION.—The county con
vention of school directors to elect a county super
intendant for the ensuing three, years, met in one
of the upper rooms of the court house yesterday
afternoon. Dr. C. Seiler, of this city, was chosen
President, and Dr. Keller and H. F. M'Reyno!ds
secretaries. On calling over the list of directors
it appeared that not more than one-half the dis
tricts were. represented. An election for superin
tendent was then gone into with the following re
sult:
Samuel D. Ingram, Harrisburg, 56 votes
D. F. Swengle, Berrysburg, 20 "
J. W. Whitcomb, Uniontown, 2 "
The president thereupon announced that Samuel
D. Ingram, having received a majority of all the
votes cast, and declared him duly elected to the
office of superintendent of common schools of
Dauphin county for three years.
The question of salary then came up, and was
fixed at the sum paid during the last term, eight
hundred dollars per annum, by a large majority,
The convention then adjourned eine die.
NEW STATE Orpiczes.—The new Democratic
State Treasurer entered upon the discharge of his
official duties yesterday. We learn that Mr: Wm.
D. Boas, of this city, has been appointed cashier.
himself and advantage to the Commonwealth.
The new Auditor General and Surveyor General
take possession of their respeetive offices to.day.
We learn that J. Montgomery Forster, Esq., of
this city, has been appointed to a clerkship in the
Mater General's office. A gentleman better fitted
for 'the position could - not have 'been selected:—
The other appointments for this department have
not been announced. Major Thomas J. Rebrer
assumes the duties of chief clerk in the surveyor
General's office. Thomas' N. Brooks, Esq , of
Crawford county, and Mr. Cooper, editor of the
Chambersburg Valley Spirit, also go into the same
department. The Democracy of the State expect
a clean sweep to be made in all the departments
now under Democratic control, and appettrances
indicate that they will not be disappointed.
MYSTRRIOUS VISITOR.-At a late hour OD Sun
day night a man answering to the name of William
Kirby, and hailing from Columbia, was found con
cealed under a bed in the house of Ida Hart, loca
ted in an obscure alley near east State street. It
is alleged that Kirby got into the house during
the absence of its occupants. A messenger was at
once despatched for officer Campbell who repaired
to the place and captured the nocturnal visito - 1
He was committed to prison by Alderman Kline.
What the fellow's real objeet was in thus dant.
tinely gaining access to, and secreting himsel 74,
the house, did not transpire at the hearing befell°
the alderman. The institution at whichibis affkli
is alleged to have occurred has a very bad reputa
tion in community, the keeper of it having re
peatedly been arraigned for harboring lewd man
and women and permitting immoral practices
generally.
OAIIP CUST/N.—We learn that the command of
this camp, during the stay of the returning nine
months' volunteers, will devolve upon Capt. Wet . ;
A. Tarhatton, former drill master at the same pleat:
The buildings have all bean renovated and fitted
up in good style for the reception of the returning
heroes, and ample arrangements made in every re
spect fer their VOinfertable accommodation.

FIRE ON TM; RAILROAD—TWO Car Lade of Coal
Oil Destroyed.—On Friday night two oars loaded
with coal oil were destroyed on the Pennsylvania
railroad a short distance below Lancaster. We
learn from the Lanoaster i papers that the axle of
the locomotive tank broke throwing several of the
cars off the track. These oars were dragged some
distance, the coal oil barrels were violently thrown
about, and finally the ears went over the embank
ment. Just as they were going down several ex
plosions were heard in rapid succession, and the
coal oil was found to be on fire. The flames spread
rapidly, and the barrels exploded one after another,
until the entire lot was one sheet of flame. Ano
ther car containing bones was also burned up, and
several others slightly injured. It was a grand
and fearful sight. The wreck, was cleared away
in time to prevent the detention 'of other trains.
MAD Doa.—A dog, exhibiting symptoms of hy
drophobia, was killed on the turnpike a short dis
tance below the city yesterday morning. We no
tice by our exchange that mad dogs have made
their appearance inleveral neighboring towns,
and in consequence a large number of canines
have been killed.

To Horse Owners.
Dr. Sweet's Infallible Liniment for Horses
is unrivaled by any, and in all cases of Lameness, ari
sing from Sprains, Bruises or Wrenching, its effect is

Ringbone may be easily prevented and cured in their
incipient stages, bat confirmed cases are beyond the
possibility of a radical cure. No case of the kind, how
ever, is so desperate or hopeless but it may be alleviated
by this Liniment, and its faithful application will al
ways remove the Lameness, and enable -the horse -to
travel with comparative ease.
Every horse owner should have this remedy at hand,
for its timely use at the first appearance of Lameness
will effectually prevent 'hose formidable diseases men
tioned; to which all horses are liable, and which render
so many otherwise valuable horses nearly worthless.
