THAT MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.—Sharp Dodge of a Rustic Youth.—Several days ago quite a sensation was caused in this city by the alleged mysterious disappearance of a man named Peter Miller, leaving - his son, a lad fourteen years of age, alone among strangers. The story told, and repeatedly insisted upon, by the supposed deserted lad, was substantially as follows : His father and himself left Buffalo, New York, their place of resi dence, some time last week, and came here by way of New York and Phiadelphia. Arriving in this city on Thursday, they took lodging at a boarding house somewhere near the railroad. On Friday morning the father furnished the boy with ten dol lars to go out and bay a gun, promising.to meet him at the depot in the course of an hour or two. He made the purchase at Gilbert's stare and re paired to the depot, but his father had mysteri ously disappeared and was not afterwards seen or _heard of. The lad seemed to be greatly distressed, and his story excited the sympathy of a number of citizens, one of whom took charge of and treated hint with great kindness. Ile was interrogated by a number of persons, some of whom doubted the truth of his story, which he pertinaciously adhered to. In the course of one of the msay exami nations to which be was subjected, the lad stated that his parents resided a short distance out of Buffalo, described the kind of house in which they lived, gave the names of his teachers in Sunday and week-day schools, and also that of the pastor of the church to which the family belonged. He further expressed a desire to be returned to Buffalo as soon as possible. The unsophisticated manner and appearance of the boy, and the tenacity with which he clung to his first statement, impressed many persons with a belief in his honesty and sin cerity. Others, less credulous, regarded his story as X fabrication, which it finally turned out to be ! From developments made yesterday morning, it appears that the youth who played this sharp dodge upon our citizens, causing a sensation in all circles and exciting general sympathy, is a simple country boy, the son of a German farmer, named Simon Swaab, residing in Washington township, at the upper end of this county, and that he ran away from home several days ago; taking with him a gun and eighteecn dollars in money belong. ing to his father. Finding that he was discovered, the lad made a full confession, but alleged . cruel treatment as the refiSen for his leaving home, and hoped he would not be sent back. The only truthful feature of his original statement was that relative to the purchaae Of a gun from Mr. Gilbert, which he subsequently sold to a boy named Mor rissey for twenty.five cents. These developments being communicated to Mayor Iteutnfort, be or. dered the lad's commitment to prison to await the arrival of Mr. Swaak who was promptly advised of the whereabouts of his hopeful son. The decep tion practiced by young Swaab, and his persistent falsification, entitle him to so little credence that few are disposed to 'place confidence in his story about cruel home treatment. He is evidently an artful and vicious boy, and unless speedily and ef fectually checked in his present course of conduct will end his career in the penitentiary. ASSA.ITLYED BY A NEGRO.—About twelve o'clock on Tuesday night a white man named Riddle, a stranger here, while perambulating the city on a tour of observation, got into the classic legality known as "Bull Run," and while passing through Cherry alley he was assaulted by a negro, who knocked him down and rifled his pockets, taking all the money he had about him, some three or four dollars. Riddle raised an warm, and the dusky highwayman skedaddled. Fortunately for the victim of this outrage he had left his well-filled pocket book in charge of the lendleed with whom he was stopping. Riddle is a lumberman from the Northpraneh region, and was on his return home from Columbia, where he had disposed of some rafts. Being unable to identify his negro assail. ant, and satisfied with his brief experience iethis city, he took the first train going north." It is pro bable that Riddle was intoxicated, otherwise -be would not have ventured into a locality which it is dangerous for white men, especially strangers, to visit at a-late hour of the night. Only a few weeks ago a similar outrage occurred in "Bull Run," the perpetrator of which has not yet been detected. A GoLim DAY.—Delightful weather is upon us, if it only lasts. Yesterday was a day worthy of the season. Spring attire was everywhere, and furs and cloaks were generally discarded by the ladies who promenaded our streets. A day so covered with gold leaf was highly enjoyable, and everybody who had leisure was out of doors. Pre parations are in progress for several "May par ties" the latter part of neat week should the weather continue pleasant, and we trust the glow ing anticipations of scores of happy-hearted little ones willbe fully realized. There is no more plea sant or healthy recreation for school girls and boys, at this delightful season, than an occasional trip to one of the many beautiful groves that bor der our city, "where wild flowers bloom and little birds make music all the day." Lit TROUBLZ AGA:M—On Monday last we re ported the arrest of Michael Durkee, proprietor of a lager beer shop and dance house on Ridge ave nue, charged by a woman residing in that locality with keeping a disorderly institution. Yesterday warrants were issued by Alderman Maglauchlin, on the oath of Christ, Rohe, against Durkee for keep. ing a disorderly house, selling beor on- Sunday, and selling without license. He was arrested by officer Campbell and held to bail for his appear ance at court to answer the above charges, which, if sustained, will subject Durkee to severe punish ment. This man is not the only one in our city who is guilty of selling beer on Sunday and with out license, and measures should be taken for the crushing out of all snob illegal institutions, the lo cation of which must be known to our police.
