Sit- D.—The Susquehanna and Delaware shad
fisheries commenced operation on Monday morn
ing, and we may soon expect to have a plentiful
supply of these always acceptable fish in our mar
ket at reasonable prices.
STILL GOING.—Oa Monday six hundred more
confederate prisoners passed down the otber side
of the river over The Northern Central railway en
route fo: rebehlom to be exchanged. Nearly an
equal number passed over the same road yesterday,
and we learn that a large number is yet to come.
Os THE RAMPAGE Anart.—Recent heavy rains,
and the sudden melting of large bodies of snow,
in the upper Susquehanna regions, have caused
another flood. Yesterday afternoon the river was
some ten feet above low water mark and still rising.
The broad bosom of the old Susquehanna is again
dotted with rafts, and we may now look for in
creasqd activity in the lumber market.
FIRST CITY Zona - rms.—We learn by private let
ters
,received from members of this company, that
they are now doing guard duty at the Old Capitol
Prison in Washington city. The boys expect to
return home about the latter part of this month)
at which time their term of service, as well es that
of the entire regiment to which they belong, will
expire. The letters alluded to also state that very
f ew of the Z3naves feel inclined to reialist.
317-VEZE/LE. PITGILISTS.—Yesterday afternoon two
juveniles, named Joseph Russ and James John
son, entertained a crowd at the depot with a pugi
listic exhibition . The elf rt was suddenly termi
nated by offmer Deeters, who took the combatants
in charge and conducted them to Alderman Kline's
office, who bound both parties over to appear at
court and answer a charge of assault and battery.
Subsequently the parents of the lads appeared and
compromised the difficulty, the father of Russ pay

Tax LEGISLATURE Rill adjourn sine die at twelve
o'clock to-day, and by to-morrow noon most of the
members will have left the Capital, homeward
bound, to render to their respective constituencies
an account of their labors here during the past
session. No doubt many of them who have proven
faithful public servants, will totem here next win
ter, with an emphatic popular endorsement; while
others will be consigned to the oblivion from which
political fanaticism first dragged them, and never
again disgrace the balls of legislation with their
presence. Next winter we expect to see alt branches
of the State government in the bands of the Demo
cratic party, and feel a confident assurance that
our expectations will be fully realized.
Tun Peen Fammr.—These celebrated vocalists
and bell ringers, who intend favoring our citizens
with two entertainments, come highly recommend
ed by the press of various cities in which they have
performed. One of our exchanges says, " the
patronage bestowed on them is well deserved, for the
exhibition compriaes an almast unexampled com
bination of musical attraction. The harmony
produced by their silver belle is as pleasing as it is
novel in character. Master Eddie and Miss Lizette
sing their songs and bsllads with a charming art
lessness of manner and most diverting effect. The
- Company also includes several instrumental and
solo artists and a brass band." So liberal and va
ied a programme must attract a numerous audito
ry in our city.
POLICE AFFAIRS —Since the late municipal
election police business has been unusually dull.
In feet the sources of crime seem to have almost
entirely dried up in our city. Formerly the May
or's morning levees furnisliSd us material for half
a column of police reports daily. Now there is no
necessity for holding Mayor's court at all, arrests
being of rare occurrence, and the offences of such
a nature as legitimately come under alderman',"
jariedictinu Although the present gratifying
condition of affiirs interferes materially with our
occupation as a gatherer-up of local items, we
cheerfully submit to the isconvenience it occasions
us, "for thh public good," and trust that the quiet
and good order which have charaeter;sed the Cap
ital city since the inauguration of the new muni
cipal government may long Continue.
SUPERINTENDENT OP CoIINION Scum Ls —The.
Governor has nominated, and the Senate con
firmed, Charles R. Coburn, of Bradford county,
as Superintendent of Common Schools for the en
suing three years. We know nothing about the
qualifications of Mr. Coburn, but we do know that
the great tones of the people of Pennsylvania, ap
preciating the eminent ability and invaluable ser
vices of Hon. Thomas H. Burrowes, as bead of the
school department, did not desire a change; and
the action of Governor Curtin in this matter will
cause universal diesatishetlen. But for the strong
Abolition pressure brought to bear upon the Gov
ernor, which he was too imbecile and weak to re
sist, we believe Mr. Burrowes would have been
retained. The appointment of Mr. Coburn cannot
be regarded in any other light than as a humilia
ting concession to the Abolition females of the
Wilmot district, at the sacifice-of

BROBS? UP AGAIN.—In our last issue we chron
icled the arrest of William Brobst, on a charge of
following and insulting respectable ladies on the
street, and his release on bail to appear before Al
derman Kline at ten o'clock. This fellow reddened
himself somewhat notorious in our city last fall by
his sharp financial operations in the substitute
business, and increased that notoriety recently by
his prominent participation in the scheme to make
Simon Cameron United States Senator, daily and
nightly dogging the footsteps and haunting the
chambers of Democratic members and holding out
to them tempting inducements to aid in the con
summation of the villainous Abolition plot. When
first captured Brobat exhibited a great deal of
virtuous indignation, and expressed astonishment
that a "respectable" man like him should be
charged with such a serious offence. The game
didn't win, however, and on being informed that
he must find bail or go to prison, he suddenly sub
sided from the indignant to the pathetic; but that
dodge also failed, and he la the office under es
cort of the Chief of Police, in search of a friend to
"see him through." After repeated applications
and rejections, B:obst at last induced David Brin
dle; keeper of a drinking saloon under the Herr
House, to accompany him to the Alderman's office
and go security for his appearance yesterday morn
ing at ten o'clock. He manifested great anxiety
to have the matter kept quiet, and offered to "pay"
the Chief of Police "handsomely" if he would man
age to prevent a report of. his arrest getting into
the newspapers. Barney indignantly spurned the
sffered tribe, and told him he must take his
chances like all other offenders. At the appointed
time yesterday morning Brobst was promptly on
hand, and made an effort to have the case compro
mised, but the Alderman was inexorable, and a
second time he was obliged to go in search of bail-
On the night previous he bo astingly / declared to
Barney that George Bergner or Donald Cameron
would go his security, but neither of these political
and personal friends " cams to time." Tois was
rather ungrateful, coneidering the important part
played by Brobst in the scheme to elevate the pa
tron of the one and the .father of the other to the
United States Senate. After being absent some
time Brobst returned to the Alderman's office ac
companied by the aforesaid David Brindle and
Samuel Harvey Walters, who entered security, in
the sum of four hundred dollars each, for the de
fendant's appearance at the April court to answer
the charge preferred against him. It appears that
for some time past Brobat, who professes to be a
man of family, has been in the habit of making fa
miliar approaches to respectable ladies on the
street and grossly insulting them. This was the
ease on Monday evening, when the Chief of Po
lice detected him in the act and promptly arrested
him. It is time an example was made of " lewd
fellows of the baser sort," who indulge in these
acts of scoundrellEM ; and we trust that Brobat will
get 'the full measure of punishment which his in
famous conduct deserves.
Paz MURDERER OF LIZZIE GERMAIL—Oar read
ers are aware that some days ago Mrs. Weitzel, of
this city, accompanied by Mr. Emanuel German
and officer Fleck, went to Dayton, Ohio, to exam
ine an alleged murderer confined in the prison
there, supposed to be the fiend that outraged and
murdered little Mary Elizabeth German in the
month of October last. The district attorney has
information from officer Fleck to the effect that
the warless, Mrs. Weitzel, at once. identified the
prisoner as the individual in whose company she
had seen the deceased on the evening prior to the,
murder. What revelations, if any, the prisoner
made in regard to that horrible tragedy, is not
stated, and we must await officer Fleck's return for
father developments. It will be a relief to our
whole community to know that the perpetrator of
the most fiendish outrage on record has at last
been detected. Should he escape conviction on
the charge for which he was arrested at Dbyton,
he will be brought here for trial. It was expected
that Mr. German and Mrs. Weitzel would reach
home last evening.
THE NEGRO REGIMEET.—We have seen a letter
written by one of Tom Chester's sable recruits,
now in camp at Boston, from which it appears that
the filling up of the negro regiment is progressing
very slowly. The number now in camp is only
four hundred and twenty, and this after three or
four months' energetic recruiting throughout the
entire Worth. The company to which the Harris
burg recruits are attached numbers seventy-seven,
and the letter-writer says, "a lot of bad boys we
haie." This is not very eomplintentarY to the
sable BOOS of Mars, but we have no doubt of its
truth. From present indications the effort to re
cruit even one full negro regiment in all the free
States is likely to prove a total failure. The black
Abolitionists, like their white-skinned brethren,
have no stomach for the fight, and prefer skulking
at home, while the men whom they brand as
"traitors" and "copperhead?' are braving danger
and death on the battle-field for the salvation of
•
the country.

Dear Sir—l would state that I was induced to use
BRANDRETIPS PILLS through the recommendation of
John It ) Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and be
tiled everything, but was not relieved. Finally, ha took
one Brandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with occasional doses of six. In one
month he was able to go to work, and in three months
was well, gaining 41) pounds in weight.
Yours truly. EDWARD PURDY.

THE
GREAT EXTERNAL REMEDY,
FOR RHEUMATISM, GOUT, NEURALGIA,

For all of which it is a speedy and certain remedy,
and never fails. This Liniment is prepared from the
recipe of Dr Stephen Sweet, of Connecticut, the fa
mons bone setter, and has been need in his practice for
more than twenty yeard with the most astonishing sac-
Cen.
AS AN ALLEVIATOR OF PAIN, it is unrivaled
by any preparation before the public, of which the most
skeptical may be convinced by a single trial.
T hie Liniment will cure rapidlyand radically, RHEU
MATIC DISORDERS of every kind, and in thousands
of cases where it has been used it has never been known
to fail.
FOR NEURALGIA, it will afford immediate relief
in every case, however distressing:
It will relieve the worst Lases of HEADACHE in

ing directly upon the nervous tissues, it strengthens and
revivifies the system, and restores it to elasticity and
vigor.
FOR PILES.—As an external remedy, we claim that
it Is the best known, and we challenge the world to pro
duce an equal. Every victim of this distressing com
plaint should give it a trial, for it will not fail to afford
immediate relief, and in a majority of cases wip effect
a radical cure.

tremely malignant and dangerous, but a timely applica

healing properties of DR. SWEET'S INFALLIBLE
LINIMENT, when used according to directions. Also,

the first appearance of Lameness will effectually pre
vent those formidable diseases to which all horses are
liable and which render so many otherwise valuable
horses nearly worthless.
Over tour hundred voluntary testimonials to the won
derful curative properties of this Liniment have been
received within the last two years, and many of them
from persons in the highest ranks cf life.
