DspranarA.--This dreaded and fatal disease still
prevails to a considerable extent here and in the
adjacent rural districts. We heard of a number of
new cases during the past week, several of which
proved fatal, in some instances causing death in
the course of a few hours. Adults as well as chil
dren are its victims.
TAKEN TO WILLIAESPORT.—.TheOtOriOtIs horse
thief, Mouthed, pardoned out of the Dauphin
county prison last October, and recently arrested
in Philadelphia for horse stealing in 'looming
county, is now in prison at Williamsport awaiting
a triaL Ills late operations in the Northern sec
tion of the State have been quite extensive. None
of Mootbart's accomplices have yet been captured.
Nzaaoßxcuurrs.—Middletown is doing its snare
towards filling up the Massachusetts negro regi
ment. Some twenty-five sable recruits were for
warded from that place daring the past week, Why
don't Tom Chester continue the recruiting business
in this place. Oar citizens are anxious to get rid
of the whole worthless negro population, and would
gladly aid Tom in bringing about a consummation
so devoutly to be wished.
HORBIBLE.-A few dap; ago a little girl named
Mary Reed, of West Lebanon, Indiana county,
entered a steam grist mill, and by some means her
clothing was caught by an upright shaft attached
to the belting apparatus, forcing the body between
the shaft and a post about six inches from it. The
head was completely severed from the shoulders,
and the body bruised and mangled in a most shock
ing manner.
Tsa Passovas.—The feast of the Jewish Pass
over, which commenced last Friday, will close this
evening at euudown. It has been. strictly observed
in this oity. The Passover was instituted to com
memorate the deliverance of the Israelites from
Bgyptian bondage, and during its observance
members of the ancient faith do not partake of
anything made of grain, hops or malt. To-day
the eeremonies in the Synagogues will be of a .
highly interesting and impressive character.
qOI7IITY SCHOOL SOP ERINTrttDENT.—Ttio time for
the election of a new county school superintendent
is near at band. We have heard no names men
tioned in connection with the office for the next
term of three years, but as there is plenty of good
material in the county from which to select, the
directors will have no difficulty in procuring the
services of a competent man. There can be no
peksonal objection to the prooent incumbent, Mr.
Samuel D. Ingram, but baying filled the office for
a long series of year; we think that, as a mutter
of simple justice, it is about time for him to retire
in favor of some other equally meritorious and
competent gentlenian. There are many such in our
oily and county, whose long experience in teach
ing, familiarity with the entire routine of common
Behest education, and enthusiastic devotion to our
present excellent and popular system, eminently
inalify bum for the position. We trust, therefore,
that when the directors assemble in county conven
tion, they will fairly and impartially canvass the
claims and laterite of new applicants for the super
intendency, and, in their wisdom, make such a
selection as will be likely to command public ap
probation and prove beneficial to the canes of pop.
mar education In oar midst.
JACOB F. SEILER, 0. S
Tim CASE or WlLLtax Srnon.—We have learned
some further particulars relative to the case of the
insane man from Lebanon county, arrested here a
few days ago and sent to the poor house. He was
formerly a farmer in Lebanon county, and after ac
quiring considerable wealth retired from agricni.
tural purdnits. For some years past be has been
engaged in litigation with a number of persons,
thy perplexity and annoyance incident to which. in
connection with pecuniary losses, finally affected
his mind, and on numerous occasions he has wan
dered away from home, remaining absent for weeks
at a time. Sevtrarweeks ago, while laboring un
der a fit of temporary insanity, he suddenly and
mysteriously disappeared, with five or six hundred
dollars in his possession, all of which he squan
dered before his return, having in the meantime
visited New York city and various other sections
of the country. After his return last week be
managed to obtain some two hundred dollars, when
he again eluded the vigilance of his friends, and
started for this pity, arriving here last Saturday
evening. On Monday night he was found wander
ing about the streets penniless, having been rob
bed of all his money. He was sent to the county
prison for safe keeping until morning, and subse
quently conveyed to the poor house, by order of
the Mayor. Yesterday Ur. Joseph Light, of Leb
anon, acting in behalf of the friends of the insane
man, came here in pursuit of him, having learned
of his whereabouts from items published in our
columns. Mr. Light at once made arrangements to
have Stroh removed to the State Lunatic Hospital,
whither he was conveyed by the Chief of Police.
lie informed us that Stroh is a married man, re
sides a mile or two below the town of Lebanon,
and has frequently been imprisoned in that county
for bad treatment of his wife. Ho still owns a
small property and has some means at his com
mand. We learn that his case is not regarded as
a desperate one, and it is hoped that a few weeks
or months in the lunatic hospital, with proper
treatment, may restore the unfortunate man to his
former sound mental condition.
PASSED Tanottott.—Lieut. Mark Supplee, of the
Fifty-first regiment Pann'a. volunteers, passed
through this city yesterday en route for the seat of
war, having been at his home in Upper Merlon
township, Montgomery county, for some time past,
in a disabled condition, from the effects Of a severe
wound received at the battle of Fredericksburg.
Lieut. Bupplee is a brave and gallant young offi
cer. He participated in the memorable battles of
South Mountain, Antietam, etc., on all of which
occasions he greatly distinguished himself. He is
still somewhat debilitated, his wound not being
entirely healed, but anxiety to rejoin his regiment,
and take part in the stirring events soon to tran
spire, induced him to hasten to the seat of war,
although not in physical condition to do so. Ile is
a sound Democrat, loyal to " the Constitution and
the Union," and will distinguish himself in the
future as he has in the past.. He belongs to that
very numerous class of "copperheads" in the army
who will eventually exterminate the entire race of
"blacksnakes," north and south, and bring about
a restoration of union, peace and prosperity.
POLICE Ar.varns.—Nothing of special public in
terest has transpired in the police department for
a week past. Thequiet and good order which now
prevails throughout cur entire city limits is highly
creditable to the new municipal Chief Magistrate
and his active and efficient subordinates. The
corner lounging nuisance has been effectually aba
ted; street brawls, and riots in negro localities,
are of rare occurrence; instead of scores of daily
arrests for drunkenees and disorderly conduct, the
lock-up seldom has an occupant, and committing
magistrates and newspaper reporters find their
occupations materially iaterfcred with. This state
of affairs is gratifying in a double sense : it exhi
bits a commendable degree of vigor in the enforce
ment of law and the perservation of public order,
and a proportionate decrease of arrests in once
(pence, greatly lightening the burdens of a tax
oppressed people. May the present encouraging
condition of affairs in our city long continue.
SPRING Tl3l2.—Another exhibition of vernal
weather was vouchsafed us yesterday. Blue birds
and robins hopped among the tree branches and
sang merrily, and canaries in their ornamental
prisons warbled sweetly. Vegetation is singular
ly, though fortunately, backward. In the buds of
the fruit trees we can see no signs of that expan
sion which is usual at this time of year. This fact
promises well for fruit. Should there be no late
frosts, pomologiete will have a prosperous season.
Spring is now fairly inaugurated, and we only
want a few sweet refreshing showers to start the
green grass to growing, the swelling buds to burst
ing, and the fragrant flowers to blooming. In a
very short time we shall see the whole country
"In light and airy dress arrayed,
Festooned with buds and flowers."
A FATAL RAILROAD ACCIDONT.—On Thursday
morning a fatal accident occurred on the Pennsyl
vania railroad a few miles below Mount Joy. As
the train going east was passing there farmer
named Henry G. Herr, living in that vicinity, un
dertook to drive some hogs off the track, when the
bumper of the engine struck him, causing instant
death. The train was stopped and backed to the
spot, but life was found to be extinct. He was not
mangled or disfigured, only a little blood being
on one of his hands, the blow of the bumper hav
ing caused death from internal injuries.
FRESH SIIA.D are brought here in small quanti
ties, and continue to sell at prices which render
them a luxury beyond the indulgence of people of
limited means. At fifty and seventy-five cents
each, and small at that, only people with plethoric
pocket books can afford to invest in this favorite
and delicious species of the Ow tribe, The re
gglar shad fishing season is now about to open,
however, and they will soon be abundant and cheap
in our market. "Wait a little longer."
NOT COMPLETED.—The new canal lock, two miles
below this city, is not yet completed, but ! via learn
that it will probably be in a condition to pass boats
by the middle of next week.
Tossourar,.—Mr. Joan Kemmerer, who stands
at the bead of the tonsorial business in this city,
has now two shops in operation, ono in the roar of
the Buehler rinse, and another, recently opened,
in Sixth street adjoining the United States hotel,
both fitted up in the most elegant and luxurious
style, with all the modern improvements. All

easy shave, undergo a pleasant shampooing-opera

equaled style, thould drop in at one or other of

Facts bout Brandreth's Pills.
Mew CAMS, WESTMINSTER CO., N. Y . Oct. 23, 1862.
Ma. SI. Trat EYCK SHELDON, .EVitor Sing Sing Republi-
Dear Sir—l would state that I was induced to use
BRANDRETH'S PILLS through the recommendation of
John R. Swift, of Croton, Westchester County, who was
entirely restored to health by their Use. He was sick
for some two years, very costive and dyspeptic, and he
tried everything, but was not relieved. Finally, he took
one Brandreth's Pill every day for a week, and a dose of
six Pills every day for three days, and then took one
Pill every day, with occasional doses of six. In one
month he was able to go to work, and' in three months
was well, gaining 40 pounds in weight.
Yours truly, EDWARD PURDY.
WESTOMISTISR COUNTY, 88.
Edward Purdy, being duly sworn, says that he resides
in the town of New Castle; that sonic years ago he was
very sick with a core on his leg, which had been run
Ding for over five years; ;that he was also much dis
tressed by a pain in his chest,sa i , besides, was very cos.
Nye and dyspeptic; that after rying various remedies
and many physicians, he commenced using Brandreth's
Pills, six to eight three times a week, and at the end of
one month the sore in his leg healed, and at the end of
two months be was entirely cured of costiveness, dys
pepsia and pain, and has remained well ever since.
